Movie Identification

Okay, I'm struggling as my memory is a little faded, but there is a movie I'm trying to locate, here is what I remember:

• Young teen/teenager is a buddhist (or similar) and lives in India (or similar - but I'm thinking India).
• Teen's father/mother/parents/caretaker passes away, he watches the cremation ceremony.
• Teen moves to the US, maybe California with a relative or someone he knows
• Teen learns and teaches others, but the actual story line is a little rough, I remember him holding his breath underwater for a long period of time though (meditation).

Anyone have any idea?
