My daughter's birthday is June 1st, but because her best friend will be in town a few weeks later, we are going to have her party the week of June 18-19. She wants a movie party, and it just so happens that Toy Story 3 comes out that weekend. It seems PERFECT. Sadly, none of the theaters around us do organized birthday parties, but we could do pizza and cake at our house, then take the kids to the theater for the show.

My question is, do you think that it is insane to try to plan this for opening weekend? I figure that they will put tickets on sale early for the show, but do you think that this will be like Twilight or Harry Potter, where people will be camping out for tickets? Also, does anyone know how far in advance tickets will go on sale? I was thinking that I could put an RSVP date of June 1st, so that I knew how many kids to plan for (although I am 99% positive that everyone will come). There will only be 7 kids, so I will need about 10 tickets.

So what do you think? Is it doable or am I likely to end up not being able to get tickets after I send invites out?

I think you should be fine. I would go the morning of for a later show. Or the day before.

A lot of the ticket questions totally depends on your theater's ticket policy. If your theater is hooked in with Fandango, you'll be able to purchase tickets at least three or four days ahead of time. A good rule of thumb is just to enter your theater into the search on Fandango.com and see what pops up. A lot of times, any advanced ticketing options will show up. I know that our local theater sold New Moon tickets for two months online, but this won't be that crazy. I think as long as you avoid the 7:00 show, you should be fine! That's normally a crazy time the first couple of days for something like that.

You might just call your theater and ask them directly about purchasing early. Sounds like a great idea for a birthday party! My son would LOVE something like that!
