So we have these people who moved in a few years ago that we cannot stand. They clearly came from somewhere that they have no clue how to be in a nice neighborhood. Our neighborhood has rules, but they are not regulated by anyone. Anyway, these people have been known to leave their Christmas tree out on the side of their house until July, shovels (the snow kind) will lay in their yard all summer long, they hang their laundry on their front porch, just things like that. Well, the last 2 years they have the parents come and stay with them ALL summer long. Fine by me, but they bring their HUGE motor home and park it in their driveway. This thing is so giant that it almost hits the sidewalk. Anyway, it has always been an eyesore and all the neighbors hate it. My DH even sent them a letter this year with a copy of the rules highlighting the area where it says no trailers of any kind are allowed to be parked on the property, ever. He asked them to please comply with the rules and they ignored it. So our house went on the market last Thursday and I am afraid that their beast of a trailer is going to hinder the sale of my house. It really is obnoxious. So what would you do? Would you ask them again to remove it? I don't want to be snotty neighbors but I swear to god, if my house does not sell because of their trailer, I am going to be pissed!

You say your community has rules. Does it have any sort of a governing body to whom you can take this issue?

What do they do about compliance with other rules?

I don't think there is anybody. We have rules and we had to sign them agreeing to them when we bought into the neighborhood. But there is no actual association or dues that go along with that. We have never really had this problem before since everyone else really tries to make the place looks nice.

Then you don't have rules :) If you don't have a way to enforce them, you are out of luck

Is a motor home a trailer? Not sure if they are one in the same or not.

Well, here we call them trailers or motor homes. They are one in the same. So to be clear, it is a very large motor home. I would say pretty close to the size of a tour bus.

I guess I've spent too much of my life living in the sticks, but I've never understood how a neighbor's motor home (unless it's a falling apart rust bucket) could hurt anyone else's property values.

Thats what I was thinking too. There may be a difference between a motor home and trailer in the rules since one is a motor vehicle. Now I suppose if it was unregistered and uninspected that would be a different story.

Because it is directly across the street from me and if you look out my front window, all you see is that motor home.

Just as someone posted above. If the rules are not enforced then in reality you have no rules. I do empathize with you but I don't think you have any options at this point. Many developments that have these rules are HOA's that have dues and they enforce the rules and regulations by putting leins on someone's house. That is part of the reason that they have dues.

I am sorry

I agree.....
You know, those Class A motorhomes can be pretty pricey.....in some cases, upwards of $1M. Perhaps they think they're in line with the property values?:confused3 ;)

That would drive me insane as well. Maybe you should get other homeowners together and form an official association to enforce the existing rules.

In our town, there are town zoning regulations prohibiting a motor home to be on a piece of property for more than a certain # of days...I want to say it's 2 weeks.

My BIL's DF used to have a huge motor home, about the size of a tour bus, and when he came to visit them and it was parked in their yard, one of their neighbors always made sure to call the Zoning office and have someone come out and tell them the rules.

And then the Zoning office watched to make sure the rules were followed.

Is it rusty and falling apart? or is it in decent condition? Is it blocking a spectacular view of the mountains, ocean or something else amazing??? If the motorhome is in decent shape then it would not make any difference to me if I was home shopping. Good Luck!

Since this has gone on for two years already, perhaps you could have planned the sale of your house accordingly and listed it at a time when the motorhome wasn't there?

Ummm no. My house is ready now and I am not going to wait until fall to put it on the market. It is hard enough in today's market to sell a house.

I agree, a motorhome probably wouldn't bug me. Laundry, snow-shovels and rotting Christmas trees...may be another story.

I guess that just talking to them is not a good idea? Maybe trying to phrase it that the motorhome blocks the view of the neighborhood... all the trees and landscaping. Not that there's anything against the motorhome, just that it's preventing potential buyers from seeing what a great neighborhood it is??

And that, by the way, you getting a good price for your home can only help their property values??
