I'm going to be staying solo at CSR. I don't think my family ever left tips while we visited resorts before, but then again, I was only in charge of my own spending money then. So question...

What would the appropriate tip amount for someone staying alone in a moderate resort?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I think I would leave $2.00 a day. I always leave a tip for housekeeping on my solo business trips. Maybe I'm not the norm, but I remember when I had to do that kind of work and I really appreciated extras.

I've read in a few places that the average tip is about $1 per family member staying in the room. So a family of 3 would leave $3 a day (on average). I've never tipped housekeeping before in other hotels. I just never knew that it was normally done. I'm glad I know now! :D

If you choose to leave a tip, the "norm" (at least on the Dis) seems to be $1 - $2 per person per day.

Just wondering.....do you leave a tip each day or do you just leave it at the end of your trip.

Thanks!

I believe the norm is to tip daily. Of course, I'm sure that mousekeeping would be happy with anything, so if you choose to tip just once, that would be fine too :)

If you choose to tip, keep in mind you may not have the same mousekeeper for your entire stay. So the mousekeeper cleaning your room the day you check out may not be the one you had on previous days. I choose to tip and choose to do it daily.

The boards had some great advice when we did our WDW trip in July. Someone had suggested doing the tipping envelopes before the trip. It turned out to be a great activity that I did with my DD. We purchased some stickers and plain white envelopes. We marked the day on each one and she had a blast coloring and decorating the envelopes. I put the tip money inside and packed them with my luggage. When we got to the hotel, I put the envelopes inside the in-room safe and each morning pulled out the right day's envelope and left it on the nightstand. It was so nice not having to scrounge around for $1's each morning as we were rushing off to the parks.

Tammi's idea is great. My DD has been busily working on her envelopes for the last couple of days (we leave on Saturday). They are really works of art and it gives her an outlet on her excitement. But the real benefit is not having to look for ones before heading off to the park!

I also would encourage daily tipping if you choose to tip. Our first trip to WDW, we left one tip at the end. The woman who received it was terribly grateful -- but she wasn't the person who had been doing our room every day. Also, it doesn't seem like as much of an expense if you do it daily (I know, it's just a mind game).
