I can't believe I was the one that suggested this to my hubby, but I'm thinking of canceling our Christmas Disney Trip so that we can get a screened in patio installed.

Still, it's something the whole family can enjoy, year round, and it will add some value to our home.

It's not in the budget to do the trip and the patio this year.

We went to Disney last year. There's always next year.

Oh, the withdrawals are painful! The thought of making the call is frightening! What if the CM tries to convince me to keep going? What if I don't have the strength to say No? ;) Evil Mouse.

So who has had to "sacrifice" a Disney Trip for home improvement?

Oh, I know how hard it is to call and cancel a Disney trip! We go to Disney every other year and last year was our "off" year. I did call to book a short trip thinking maybe we could do it (going for DH's b-day) but I came to my senses and called to cancel a few days later. The CM asked me why and I just said it wasn't in the budget.

Well, we got a 40% off PIN for this year - our "on" year. It was the first time I ever got a PIN and I wonder if booking a trip and then cancelling is what prompted it?

Evil mouse. HA! He sure does get us hooked doesn't he?! Be strong! :)

We have different budgets for vacaton and house repair/upgrades. We fund both and try not to raid one for the other.

While I love Disney as much as the next person, I say, take care of your house. You are there much more than at Disney and you would enjoy it year round.
Then...next year go to Disney!!!

Cancel the trip. You'll be able to enjoy the patio every day with your family.

Yes, get the patio and go the next year.

:)

I agree with get the patio!!! You won't regret it! You just went last year, you can go again next year. One year off will also make it that much more special when you go back!

House. If it were me, I would have regret after getting home from the trip. This way, you will reap the benefits for years to come.
Thats my vote.

Patio - cause when money is spent on the mouse all you have are memories, but the patio will last a long time and may even eventually pay for itself in added value to your house. (Don't get me wrong giving up the mouse would be really really hard.)

Another vote for the house. Went throught the same thing this year. It was either Disney or a new privacy fence and a new walkway in the front of the house. I already had the new fence installed and look at it and know we made the right choice.

As someone who is having regrets for the Spring Break trip, I'd pick the house.

I'm facing the same issue with Summer vacation...WDW or stick close to home and install a fence/deck.

OK - I will be different - I vote for Mouse....For years we spent money on "house stuff" and delayed vacations.....now that my kids are both grown I can look back and how I wish we had spent more time/money on family vacations!!!! You can sit in your screened in porch when you are too old to see Mouse and your kids have kids of their own.;)

guess I'm the only one going for the tirp here

I'm in such dire need for a vacation, I'd do the trip right now. Another vote for MOUSE! Plus, I think of here in the NE. Screen in porches are not for year round. Too humid and hot in summer, too cold in winter. So, you only use them a bit in Spring and Fall. We used to have one at the old house and it was nothing but wasted space most of the year.

OP Here . . .

We're going with the House! The evil Mouse will understand and has issued us a standing invitation to return any time we'd like. ;)

DH is perfectly capable of building the patio. He priced out all the materials needed, and I got estimates from local contractors. It will be small difference to have the pros build the patio, so we're going that way! They'll have it done in 2 days, where it would take my poor husband about a month of weekends to get it done by himself. And, I don't have to listen to him complain about the gnats! I'm pretty excited, it's going to look great and benefit everyone in the house for years to come!

Because I just read this article the other day (titled Stuff won't make you happy, experiences will), I vote for the mouse. I'm having a similar debate with my DH this year. He wants to get a hot tub, I want to go to Disney. We haven't made definite plans for either yet. We'll see what happens!
