Mount Dora ,Florida

Anyone been here? It's north of Orlando and is supposed to be a great Antiqueing town.

I live quite close to there but haven't really had the chance to go. Perhaps soon, are you coming down, do you want me to go check it out and give you a report?

I've heard that its very nice as well!

On our drive to Orlando, DH& I plan to meander from Gainsville, to Mount Dora(I love to go antique-ing) or just drive around the lakes,and then check into the resort at 3pm.

We went to the Renningers flea/farmer/antique market a few weeks ago and it was nasty. Don't waste your time there.

I think that sounds like a great idea! I really have heard that its lovely, just haven't had the chance to get up there.

Renningers flea market is in Mount Dora? I've heard that Flea World here in Sanford is kind of icky. I've heard that downtown Mt. Dora's really nice, quite quaint(sp?)

The town is very nice with little shops scattered around. Close in parking can be a bit of a challenge, but it's a nice place to walk around and sit by the lake for a while.

Mt. Dora is a lovely little town full of great and unique shops. It is wonderful for antique shopping as well as unusual gifts and things. It has some fabulous restaurants and an english Tea shop. My brother owns a stationary store and printing company there and he and his family are really happy living there after the hustle and bustle of Orlando. It is definitely worth the drive if you want a quiet laid back day in a really old Florida Town.

Back in the day, Mt. Dora was a "Chatauqua" town. By this I mean a town where conferences were held and intellectual folk came for lectures, discussions, recreation and relaxation. There are many old homes that have been restored and some in the process. My brother just purchased a home in Eustis, not far from Mt. Dora that was once a home for retired ministers from the Church of Christ called "The Palms." The area is filled with large old mansion type homes, some of which are open and available for tours.

DH and I really enjoy downtown Mt. Dora.....just don't arrive there early. None of the stores open before 10 a.m., and some even later. Restaurants are nice and shops unique. Several very pretty Bed and Breakfasts also. Never have ventured out to the antique mart....that's because we never could figure out where it was.

My MIL lives in Mount Dora. It is a nice, kinda' "eclectic" town. While the flea market on the outskirts of town may/may not be "nasty", the downtown area is ripe with nice little shops of varying variety.

The Lakeside Inn is a nice place to stay and has a nice Champagne Brunch on Sundays.

They also have REAL train tours of the area lasting about 1/2 - 1 hour.

It's situated on Lake Dora and is one of the last "quiet" areas in that area of the state, although it's growing a lot in the surrounding areas.

It may or may not be your cup of tea, but it is definitely worthing investigating to find out.

Oh yeah, if you should see the Episcopal Church just east of the downtown area, that's where my DW & I got married!!

Oh, and BTW, if you have ever seen a really BAD late 70's movie ntitled "Honky Tonk Freeway", it was filmed there.

The entire downtown area was painted HOT PINK for some of the scenes.

And ya' thought the Castle @ WDW looked bad for the 25th Anniversary............................... ??
