Motion sickness - rides to avoid?

DL: Teacups, Star Tours, Space Mountain, Roger Rabbit, and occasionally Big Thunder (love it but cannot ride in twice in a row - I need a break in between. Same with Star Tours actually). Indiana I'm totally fine with.

DCA: the new Soarin, and the swings. I've never tried Screaming as I expect it would make me feel sick. I was fine with the Fun Wheel (non swinging).

One of the things I love about Disneyland is that there are lots of rides that I can go on, whereas at other theme parks if you suffer from motion sickness its very limited.

I get motion sickness very easily, in the car, plane, boats, even just looking at teacups at disneyland makes me sick, I take Bonine, Dramimine and all it does is make it a bit better for some rides, I still avoid anything that just spins, teacups, swings, star tours, lady bug in DCA, heck, I get sick if the merry go round gets a bit faster. i make sure I have food in my tummy and stay hydrated and avoid all spinning or simulator rides.

Star Tours seems to be the big one for me and occasionally Soarin', but most of the time that's alright. I always get carsick at home, but every other ride at DL and DCA seem to be okay for me. Other than Mickey's (not-so) Fun Wheel swinging cars - but those are just terrifying.

I cannot use Dramamine or similar meds because of the side effects, but have found that ginger candies, e.g. Gin Gins hard candy and Ginger People chews, can really help. I keep them in my bag, along with ginger capsules from the health food store. Also, I discovered that I have far less trouble if I can have an unobstructed view of what's in front of me. So on ST, Soarin', the coasters, etc. I ask to be in the front row so I don't have someone's head right in front of me. On coasters I don't have to be in row 1, but the front row of the car works well enough. There's just something about having my view of the horizon (whatever that view may be) blocked out or uneven while moving that sets me off. If this helps you, just as the CMs when they sort you for loading. You may have to wait for the next car or group, but they are usually glad to help you.

When I use the patch, I still feel dizzy, but it doesn't affect my stomach as much, so I don't feel the nausea. Like, my head is saying "I'm sick enough to throw up" but my tummy is like "Eh, I'm good." Make sense? I always use the patch (and meclizine) when I have to fly, and I haven't felt sick enough to throw up since I started using it, even when the flight is bumpy. I did get pretty near to it on the third day of a patch during a rough ferry ride back from Mackinac Island, though.

You do have to keep it on for the duration--if you take it off, it won't re-stick. I like to put it on the night before I'm going to go on rides/an airplane/etc. so it has time to get into my system. You wear it behind your earlobe and it isn't terribly noticeable. I pay about $40/patch.

I think I see what you mean. That sounds like what my Dr was saying, but maybe the feeling isn't as severe as he made out. I might give it a try. A 5 day trip would be 2 patches. If it's $40.00 per patch after insurance, that's not too bad to be able to ride CS and SM again. I think the first time I'll just try one and 'consolidate' the rides that make me feel 'ooky' into two days if it works.

Now, what ride to test it out on is the question! I actually tucked a 'barf baggie' into my pocket when I went on Forbidden Journey but I ended up not needing it. I guess I could do the same thing.

I have really bad motion sickness -- cannot do spinning rides AT ALL, cannot do motion simulators. Roller coasters are a little better but I have to be careful. I also get seasick very easily. Last summer I rode one of those pirate ships at the fair that swing on a pendulum -- I thought it looked ok because it wasn't very fast and didn't spin. Ended up spending the rest of the day in the first aid tent.

I have found one thing that works for me -- the Relief Band.
https://www.amazon.com/ReliefBand-Motion-Sickness-Device-Batteries/dp/B00VU8XXBE/

This not one of those inexpensive pressure bands. It zaps your wrist with a small electrical (battery operated) current.

Wearing this, I can go on Dumbo, Astro Orbiter, Indy, GRR (it spins big time), and just about anything else in the park. I've been on teacups (although only on the condition that my kids didn't spin it). I've worn it every time I've been to DL in the past 8 years or so ... still, until our last trip, I was afraid to try Star Tours because motion simulators just make me so sick. Finally last year I decided to try it, making it the last ride of the night just in case. No problem. I ended up riding it two more times before we left that week. There is only one ride that was still awful for me ... Space Mountain. OMG I thought I was going to die before I got off that ride!

It's pricey but unlike patches, etc., you don't have to have a doctor's rx and you can use it again and again. You can also wear it just when you want, so it doesn't affect you at other times. You can even turn it on AFTER you get off a ride if you're starting to feel sick and it should help. Although I've never tried that because I always turn it on before. You do have to be sure you have it in the correct spot on your wrist, but that's explained in the instructions.

Best investment of my life to be able to go on all these things with my kids!

I actually tried this on my last trip-- it works kind of like the patch for me, in that I still get dizzy, but the feeling doesn't seem to extend to my stomach. The electrical pulses did take a bit of getting used to. I'd also recommend getting the version with a replaceable battery-- you don't want to spend that much money on something that's useless after the battery dies. I got a kit that came with extra gel and an extra battery to make sure I was getting the right model.

I asked my Dr about the patch and he said I'd still feel nauseated, but just not enough to vomit so I said never mind. But it sounds like it works really well for you. You don't feel any nausea? Does it make you tired? And finally, can you simply put it on and take it off or do you have to wear it all day? I may push the issue with my Dr if there's really no nausea and it doesn't make you really tired. I know, individual results may vary, but it would be worth giving it a try. The scary part would be the worry about what if it doesn't work!!

My MS is moderate I'd say. I can do ToT, BTMRR, & MH multiple times no problem, but not CS, SM, or ST. The Forbidden Journey at USH didn't bother me, either. I was like you with CS (it's the rapid deceleration at the end), but then it got just enough worse that I no longer want to chance it. SM sent me back to the hotel for 2 hours, sick as a dog.

When I use the patch I don't suffer from the dizziness or nausea. It's been a blessing for me as the dry mouth and vision aren't that bad for me. For reference, I can ride SM and CS one time in a 3-4 hour period without the patch back to back with, BTMR anytime, tight spinners like the tea cups are out, gentle "revolving rides" like the Astro Orbiter or Golden Zephyr or Silly Swings are ok one time without and multiple with if you would actually ride these multiple times in one day? If I do Roger Rabbit I hold the wheel so it doesn't spin, really tough on the arms :). ToT and Star Tours never without and back to back with! TSMM makes me a bit nauseous with the turns and jerking motions between scenes so the patch really helps here as we can ride back to back to back with the patch, only once without.

Some one mentioned the "Pirate Ship" ride at other locations and I still avoid this one even with the patch. Another bad memory from my teenage years at the beach when I thought it wouldn't be that bad...

I've found the same thing is true in planes, which is why I always ask for a window seat. I never have motion sickness issues when I have a window seat, but getting an aisle seat I sometimes have trouble.

I see not many people have mentioned GRR for motion sickness issues. I can't ride it without my Relief Band because sometimes it really spins. Worse sometimes than others.

Others have mentioned keeping your eyes on a fixed spot -- I always do this as much as I can on spinning rides. They teach ballet dancers to do this. If you've ever watched one you can see how they kind of snap their head around as they spin and that's what they're doing. You keep your eyes on a fixed location as much as possible and it helps with the dizziness.

Thanks! Honestly, I'd be happy with being able to ride SM one day and CS the next without losing a few hours of park time 'recuperating'! Right now I know I can't do SM at all and CS had gotten to the point of feeling sick enough to not want to chance it again. ToT I've ridden 4 times in a row (including twice not having to get off) with no problem, but ST got to the same point at CS so I just gave it up.

I really think it may be worth giving it a try. I'll just have to figure away to 'safeguard' those around me 'just in case'.
