Motion Sickness questions

I have bad motion sickness, including on the flight over the Atlantic! I have to close my eyes for part of Soarin' and hubby who knows me well has steered me clear of pretty much every other ride! Thankfully I love Pirates and Splash so that keeps me amused but that's about it for me!

My daughter (age 22) gets motion sick on Star Tours but is ok on Flight of Passage and Soarin'. She wants to try Smugglers Run and Rise of the Resistance in July. What medicine do you guys recommend? We would prefer some that is non-drowsy.

I also struggle with motion sickness, but I love all rides and cruising so it's a bit of a catch 22 for me. I have found that 1 Bonine every 24 hours works really well for me and hasn't totally failed me yet. Star Tours and Mission Space still flip my motion sick switch when I ride them. I have to sit for about 20 minutes then I'm fine and can continue like normal. Mission Space is done for me, have rode it 2 times and won't ride it again.

That being said, does anyone else feel like EE is going upside down when you're going backwards in the dark? First time I felt it I was a bit concerned. I think you have to be sitting in the back of the coaster to feel it too, or it helps. That freaked me out though!

I use Non-Drowsy Bonine.

The scopolamine patch got me through a Disney cruise, barely. Nothing over the counter worked for me. I used to always bow out of all of the aforementioned attractions. In desperation, I decided to try the ReliefBand and it has unlocked an entire realm of theme park enjoyment for me! It allowed me to make my first visit to the other "unnamed theme park resort" and ride the top attractions (one visit was enough - no need to go back).

I let three other sufferers borrow it during WDW visits and they've each bought one for themselves. Now, after a ride, my youngest son always asks me what level I set it to (my ReliefBand has five power levels).

Hi,
I do fine on Soarin, in fact its one of my favorites! Both Star Tours and Flight of passage make me feel yucky! Never have done Mission Space
Even turning around when I'm in passenger seat and our car is moving to talk to one of our kids in backseat makes my tummy do flips!

Non drowsy dramamine and I also wear the wrist bands

I used Sea Bands when I was pregnant with little success. I've tried them for motion sickness as well, and it didn't really work at all. I think some people might have a placebo effect with the Sea Bands, which isn't a bad thing. If your brain thinks it's working, then it might just work!

I should have added that the ReliefBand uses small electrical pulses to stimulate the nerves in your wrist. You have to apply a tiny amount of conducting gel to a spot on your wrist before putting it on for use during the day. My wife doesn't care for the sensation because it reminds her of receiving an accidental household electrical shock. (She always says "clear" whenever she catches me turning it on. :))

The device is approved by the FDA to treat motion sickness and pregnancy morning sickness. My understanding is that it works by blocking the signals to and from the brain that induce nausea. My experience is that it "occupies" the brain so that it ignores the nausea. If I turn it off too soon after exiting an attraction, I'll start to get sick. The device looks like a wristwatch and they do recommend packing extra watch batteries if you plan on an ocean voyage.

Is it a learning curve, to figure out how the ReliefBand works? Dh bought it a few years ago and immediately said it didn't work. I think he only tried one ride though, and I don't remember him applying conducting gel. Did you have success the first time you used it, or did it take time? Dh has the worst motion sickness of anyone I've ever met. He has tried the patch, wrist bands, every OTC available. He tried the ReliefBand once, but maybe it takes time to figure it out? Any tips would be much appreciated.

The ReliefBand that I purchased came with a small tube of conducting gel. The instructions stated that for it to be effective, you had to feel a pulsating sensation to the tip(s) of your middle fingers(s). On power levels 4 and 5, I couldn't control a pen/pencil, so I switched wrists to avoid any problems. My fingers don't actually shake, but it sure feels as if they are being zapped.

For me, Star Tours is level 2 (only because I've ridden it a lot), Flights of Passage is level 3, Smugglers Run is level 3 and Mission Space (orange) is level 4. It also calmed my pre-ride anxiety before Expedition Everest and Space Mountain. Some of the attractions at the "other unnamed" theme park I bumped up to level 4 mid-ride.

My sister-in-law had problems on Tower of Terror, but she attributed it to becoming over-confident of the ReliefBand's ability to protect her. (She ate a taco salad with loads of spicy salsa right before heading to the ride. :crazy2:)

Thanks for the help! I'll ask dh about the gel. I'm wondering if he didn't get.it.

I just tested it, the ReliefBand doesn't work properly without using the conducting gel. I couldn't get a zap, even at level 5. Good luck!

Thanks! Turns out dh did use the conducting gel. He says he tried the ReliefBand for an entire day, but I truly don't think he did. I think he tried a couple rides, it didn't work, so he gave up. Whenever we get back to a theme park, I'm going to get him to try again. A ride like Soarin' may be good. He can get through that ride, but usually does feel sick for about an hour after riding. Maybe this could help. After hearing about your success, I really want him to try again!!!

Thanks to whomever suggested the Bonine at night. I was taking it in the morning, since it says "non-drowsy"- it works great all day, so I can do FoP, Soarin', and ST with some closing of the eyes. I also need it for Toy Story Mania- doesn't the swooshing in between stations bother anyone else? The problem is that as soon as I sit down in a show I get soooo sleepy. I figured it was the heat and the pace of the trip, so I'll try Bonine at night and see if it helps.

FOP makes both myself and my daughter both feel ill but only at one part towards the end. We both take a motion sickness pill an hour before getting on now. Even with the pill she sometimes has to sit in some AC after she gets off for a few min. She is 16 as an aside- so it isn’t like she is a small child. She on the other ha d can handle Star tours- I cannot- even with a motion sickness pill. My suggestion would be to take a bonine and try all the rides you would like. The motion sickness mrs should at least keep the motion sickness manageable so it doesn’t destroy your day and then you can see what additional rides your body can handle . Have fun!
