Motion Sickness Patch?

The active ingredient in Dramamine is dimenhydrinate, and the one in Bonine is meclizine. Unless there are 2 different names for the same stuff (they are both antihistimines), they shouldn't be the same.

I have a friend who cruises lots and has trouble with seasickness. He also swears by taking one meclizine before night, at bed, and claims it works fine for him. The ones we got for my DD, which were generic meclizine, weren't chewable. We do take the ginger capsules along too. If the sea gets rocky, taking one of those during the day takes any remaining queasy feelings away for her.

Motion sickness is one of those really weird things -- DD has NO problems at all on amusement park rides, but put her on a ship, even in calm seas, and she goes a most interesting shade of green. The only ride I've ever been bothered on, amazingly enough, was Screamin' at California adventures by Disneyland. Spin me around, turn me upside down -- no problem, but for some reason Screamin' caused a bit of vertigo.

Hope everybody finds something that works well for them!

I honestley do believe that everyone will react differently to all methods / medications and you really need to find what works for you.

For instance - I took a great recomendation from the DisBoards to take Less Drowsey Dramamine the night before, right before bed. I tried that over the summer when we were at my IL's cottage. The next day, I was still so completely out of it and tired. We went on a boat ride, and while I didn't feel seasick, I felt veeerry strange. At lunch, I had ONE HALF a glass of wine, and I felt stoned out of my mind. The room was spinning, etc...blech.

So...just keep that in mind - find what works with your own body chemistry as we're all different.

Sorry, this isn't about motion sickness.... but I have to know, how do you make that pretty sparkly Mickey on your posts? (This is to my 3 princes)

I took dhramamine last year one day so I could ride Mision Space (thank God I did or the CM's would have had to hose down our space ship after we landed back on Earth! :) ) But it made me so sleepy that I took a nap during UofE (great place to take a nap, by the way. The ride is so quiet and gentle!). If I had had a glass of wine, I think I would have passed out!!!

I did have a margarita at dinner to no ill effect, I think it had worn off by then.

So I would say you could take a pill in the morning and be okay to drink later in the day. I would check with a doctor, though!

I also like the patch. I've used it for all of our trips since 1990 and have only suffered the side effect of dry mouth (having bottled water with me takes care of that).

Unless I'm driving, I get motion sickness riding in cars, buses, and in any other moving vehicle. I put the patch on just before we leave for the airport and am then covered for the plane ride, the numerous Disney bus rides, and all of the park rides (except the tea cups) for three days without having to worry about when to take the next dose of the other types of motion sickness medications. I replace the patch after the 3rd day and am good to go for most of the remainder of our trip. I won't travel now without the patches.

Good luck with your choice of solutions and have a wonderful trip!

I have a vial of Less Drowsy Dramamine in my hand right now (I am packing  ) The active ingredientis Meclizine Hydroclhoride 25 mg per tablet. It is the same exact medication as Bonine. 2 tablets are the recommended dosage. There is no anithistimine in this product, that is most likely why I can drink and not have any reaction of any kind.

Not every drug works the same on everyone. it is best to try it out before you go to see how you react, what may work for me may not work for you.

Ten years ago, I had to fly and my sister gave me half a dramamine to take. I was groggy the whole trip.

I've been watching the boards and bought the less drowsy kind for our upcoming trip. DH was home yesterday feeling very dizzy and disoriented so I gave him a dramamine and he slept almost all day! He got up to fix himself something to eat, sat down and fell asleep in the chair! And he is not usually affected like that.

So before we go, I plan to take a day and take a pinch :rotfl: of a dramamine to see what I can tolerate!

someone on the T-shirt thread made it. Go to the cooking, crafting & Scrapbooking forum and go to the post your T-shirt Thread. You can request a sparkly signature there.

Dramamine less drowsy formula and bonine are both "meclizine". Meclizine is still considered a antihistamine which inhibits nausea and vomiting. Works pretty good, doesnt make me sleepy, but everyones different.
The "patch" can cause withdrawel symptoms if used greater than 72 hours in some people. Use it with caution when mixing with alchohol or other medicines such as dramamine regular and less drowsy formula. It can increase side effects. Make sure to wash your hands after applying it cause if you get it in your eyes you will know it!! Also may cause your eyes to be more sensitive to the sun.
I have never used the patch before but plan to do so on an upcoming cruise.
Just a little info!! Hope this helps :goodvibes
PS
Im not a know it all but a RN and know a little about drugs! ;)

Has anyone ever used the sea bands? Do they work? They were only $1.50 at Kmart, so I bought them and tablets for DH.

I've used them in the past on a boat and worked fine. Never used them on a ride though. $1.50? wow! usually around $10. These are the bands with the metal ball you place on your pulse?

YES...I was so surprize at the price too!
