Motion sickness on Soarin'?

Visual things like video games, Mission Space, and Soarin' give me terrible motion sickness. Actual motion in a car, on a boat (we're avid sailors), etc. do not. Weird. I ride Soarin' just about ever trip, but I have to close my eyes at certain times.

I get motion sickness on planes and in cars. I can do Star Tours one time and feel queasy afterwards. I get sick watching videos when the camera is moving around. I can't watch "Cops" on TV.

When Soaring first came out, I did get mild motion sickness. I found sitting in the lowest row (row 3) helped.
Having been on it many times, I've learned to close my eyes for a couple of scenes, and now I can sit in any row.

I once experienced motion sickness from Philharmagic (it was after a VERY long day, but still ) and I've never had a problem with Soarin'
However, I usually take half a Dramamine before getting on any ride that worries me. Better safe than sorry!

For those who are prone to mild motion sickness, is this an issue on Soarin'? My son and I both get headaches and semi-nauseous if we read in the car. I'm wondering how we will do on Soarin'. Any advice?

Thanks!

I get motion sickness at times, but not from Soarin'.

Overall I do not have a problem on Soarin'. There is one scene, the nighttime fly through of Los Angles, that can get to me. The scene is just a bit jittery, at least to my eyes, and that can trigger a bit of a sensation. I believe it is, as 'Sabresfan' above mentions, a disconnect between what my eyes are seeing and the motion my ears are sensing. I feel the same if I try and read while riding in a car. I just close my eyes for that scene.

Yes, Soarin' makes me nauseous. I've learned to close my eyes and just peek out every so often :) The motion itself is very mild and that alone wouldn't bother me in slightest.

Lol, don't feel too bad. My mom doesn't do well with some 3D films, and Philharmagic is one. She has to close her eyes during the carpet ride.

There are two different kinds of motion sickness... one is from motion that is felt but not seen (ie. from cars or boats) and the other is from motion that is seen but not felt (ie. watching movies with hand-held cameras). I get both so I avoid Soarin'. I also felt a bit sick after the green side of Mission Space. I can't remember specifically about PhilharMagic but I can't watch 3D movies.

Personally, the affects of motion sickness can stay with me for the rest of the day but if you come good after a few minutes, give it a go and see what happens!

I get motion sickness in cars (can't read, have to sit in the front, etc..), sometimes on planes, and I have a horrible time on cruise ships (open boats where I can see give me no problems), but I never get motion sickness from any motion simulator ride. We just got back and rode Soarin' along with every simulator ride at Universal, and I never had a problem. You never know til you give it a try! I was so worried (especially about all the rides at Universal) because of all my motion sickness issues but had no problems.

This is me.
Can't do Imax ever. Can't look at gingham tablecloths in florescent lighting, some colors placed next to each other (if they are opposite) can also get me. So no Soarin for me and I'm ok with that.

i get motion sickness and have a problem with heights but for some reason Soarin doesn't bother me all that much. I do have a little problem at the end when you are soaring at night in LA.

Soarin has done it to me, though it is only a mild feeling. Not as bad as Mission Space or the stars on Star Tours. What works for me though on Soarin is to take Bonnie before & then when/if I feel it during the ride, I completely turn my head to look to the side for a minute. You can see the sides of the building & the metal struts so it helps to refocus that you aren't actually flying & your mind calms down.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I think we will try it...and probably take a dramamine beforehand just to be safe. ;)

I cannot watch the carpet ride through the buildings in Philharmagic. Ugh.

I get very motion sick in cars, however I do not on Soarin. I hope this helps!

I do too. I don't get motion sickness per se, but I tend to get dizzy easily. For Soarin, Star Tours, Phillarmagic, Muppets, etc (basically anything that has you viewing a screen), I am usually OK as long as I close my eyes for a bit any moment I feel the dizziness coming on. Usually no more than a few seconds really, or until the overly dizzing part is over (like the carpet ride on Phillarmagic!). I am usually fine once the ride is over, so I haven never had to take anything.

Oddly enough, I am fine on roller coasters, but that might be because I close my eyes throughout them half the time :rotfl2:.

I also get motion sick in cars (even when driving! LOL) and on planes and boats. I cannot do Star Tours. But I can do Soarin' just fine.

Can someone tell me more about Dramamine? Does it take affect immediately or do you have to take it regularly for a few weeks/months beforehand? Does it really help??

It's not something you have to take a long time beforehand. It did seem to help me. I was able to ride Mission Space- Orange and Star Tours with little to no issue, whereas before I would feel nauseous during and sometimes a good while after the rides. I'm sure it affects some folks differently though. I just took one at breakfast on the days I was going to parks with rides that bother me. The directions do recommend taking it at least 1/2 hour to an hour before doing activities you need it for. A dose lasts all day.

I can't read in a car or on a bus, but I have never had a problem with going on Soarin, and Ive been on about half dozen times so far.

I also get motion sickness (terrible in cars, fine on planes, hit or miss on rides). I have found that sitting in the middle section on Soarin is much better for me than the sides. I was second from the end once and miserable for an hour afterwards.
