Motion sickness on newer attractions - advice appreciated!

I'm comparing something like Star Tours and FoP where you just sit in front of a screen the whole time, to something like Rise where you are moving through physical space and looking at 3d sets. I think the latter is much easier on people with motion sickness.
Got it.

Every person is different….but for my wife MMRR was as bad (or worse) than Star Tours. Rather than sitting in a fixed (but jostling) seat in front of a single screen…..MMRR puts you in a moving seat (although less jostling) in front of multiple screens. That one wasn’t good for her at all.

RotR is less dependent upon screens and is more about movement through physical spaces (without much jostling). If it weren’t for the drop (if you’ve been on you know what I mean) I think my wife would do better on RotR than MMRR. However, she’s not a big enough Star Wars fan to take the risk….

That's interesting. M&M doesn't feel like a screen to me, maybe just because of how big the rooms are. But there are some scenes where I can imagine people getting motion sick.

Now that I have ridden the new rides, I will chime in.
I wear a patch the entire trip, always. Star Tours is borderline for me, if it were any longer, I would have a problem. FoP is a little better, but also can't be any longer. DD also has issues, not as bad as me though.
We both wore patches for Remy, I wasn't too bad, but she was a bit queasy. The only thing that bothered her the entire trip.
ROTR and MMRR we had zero issues on, she rode without the patch.
MFSR, I find pilot worse than engineer, we did both this trip, and I was ok as engineer but was glad it wasn't longer for pilot. but it's so cool it's worth it.

I usually struggle with motion sickness and the only one that bothered me (besides Star Tours - that gets me every time) was FoP. However, I will say, I enjoyed the concept so much that I was very relaxed and I think that helped. At one point I felt a little queasy so I looked left at everyone else's feet and that helped for some reason!
Exactly the same here! Looking at all the feet helped.

and made me realize how huge that ride is!

When I'm in FoP (or any attraction with a screen that starts to make me queasy - even UoE used to have a scene like that), I just close my eyes.

Do you think that will work for me in MMRR and Remy? I can do TSM but not Tea Cups.

I’m heading back in November after a two-year hiatus. I have a tendency for motion sickness on some attractions.
We’re fortunate to be doing the VIP tour for first the time and am going with my grown sons as well as other younger family members (all 20’s & 30’s). We’ll be doing mostly headliners.

Thus I’m trying to figure out where some of the newer attractions sit in terms of motion sickness. I know this is extremely subjective by individual but I’m listing below the types of attractions I can and cannot do as well as the newer ones. If anyone has any thoughts or experience I’d appreciate it greatly!

I can do:
- smaller coasters (SDMT, Big Thunder Mtn, Space Mountain is a stretch tho!)
- Soarin
- test track
- toy story mania
-splash mtn

can’t do:

- FOP (worst experience ever for me, got super dizzy!)
- large coasters (ie RnR, Everest)
- Star Tours (the heavy video ones throw me off for some reason)

Given above, which newer attractions below should I try most to avoid, if any?

- ROTR
- Millenium Falcon
- Remy
- M&M railroad
- Slinky Dog Dash

I’m struggling between trying to push the envelope a bit, but I don’t want to ruin my day either. I took Dramamine before FOP and it didn’t help. I also can stay and chat with the guide during some attractions which I’ll enjoy as well.

Thanks for any thoughts! 😊
My daughter who suffers same as you is completely fine with slinky dog dash and ROTR. She closes her eyes on flight of passage.

Motion sickness is so different for everyone, isn't it? Remy ruined an entire day for my husband. :( He has the worst motion sickness of anyone I know, and nothing works for him. He can't do any simulator rides, so Star Tours and Millenium are out. He has down both, but felt terrible afterwards. He can handle Soarin', but has to close his eyes a few times. Slinky Dog Dash bounces around too much, so he can't do that anymore either. He still DOES do Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway AND Rise of the Resistance, but there are moments in both where he doesn't feel well. But, it's not so bad that he can't do them. They're still worth it to him! Have a great trip!

That’s what it comes down to for those who risk motion sickness, everyone to varying degrees, is it worth it? I’d imagine MMRR was so bad that my wife couldn’t do it again, but the ride is just a’ight anyway so not worth the risk of her being even a little off. She is not a Star Wars fan so no FOMO for her, so she avoids that risk even though I think she’d probably be ok. I’m thankful I don’t personally have to worry about such things!

As you said, motion sickness is a very personal, subjective matter… but my sister & I always bounce new rides off each other bc we each have people in our families (inc ourselves!) with varying degrees of motion sickness, & it helps to talk it out 😉

Years ago, we learned from a deep-sea fishing enthusiast that the key to less seasickness/motion sickness is to start taking anti-nausea med’s the night before & then again on the morning of the excursion. On days we know we will be pushing our limits, we use that trick & it really helps. Staying hydrated, cool, & having salt/electrolytes in my system also helps me a lot!

When I was on medication that caused (additional) dizziness & nausea, I could only do Toy Story Mania, SDD, and Soarin’ on good days. Screens & hills both did me in entirely. 😵 Yet, I was still fine riding ROTR & MMRR (as long as I closed my eyes during moving screen sequences). So, who knows?!

FoP made me the dizziest I’ve ever been on a ride (I nearly fainted), and Star Tours made me feel the sickest until… Millennium Falcon. It was the only time in my life that I actually got sick after a ride (I was a pilot- worst idea ever!!!) 🤮

I haven’t had the chance to ride Remy yet (I’ll be there in just 4 days!!!), but I do have some reservations. I’ve decided it’s worth the risk for me- but only you can decide what’s worth it for you. Best of luck!! ✨

I grew up spending lots of time on boats and have always struggled with motion sickness. There's some truth to that advice, but the other thing that always helped me was not having a completely empty or overfull stomach. So I always had saltines and ginger snaps on the boat. I might carry some in my park bag come to think of it.

Also going to get some strong ginger candies this trip and see if that helps. (Ginger ale and ginger snaps don't usually have enough in them to make much of a difference). Ginger doesn't always help me but can't hurt!

Absolutely agree! My daughter actually prefers the ginger capsules (“natural” dramamine/bonine) to standard anti-nausea meds. She & I both also use UpSpring “stomach settle” lemon-ginger honey drops to suck on during yuck days (at home & traveling).

& I love VerMints ginger mints- they’re the best!! 😍
(** these I have to be more careful with bc of a past ulcer/gastritis condition & their strong ginger content)

I have finally convinced my husband to head back to Disney with me after many years off. He gets motion sickness and I don’t. I want him to enjoy the upcoming trip so could those of you who who get sick tell me which rides to avoid so he won’t end up hating Disney?😜
Thanks !

Flight of Passage, Star Tours, Rise of the Resistance, Millennium Falcon Smuggler’s Run, Soarin, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Toy Story Mania, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway (possibly),

It depends on the severity of his issue. I am thinking in addition to what was said would add Mission Space, Teacups, Astro Orbitor, Aladdin, Dumbo, Dinosaur, Alien Flying Saucers, and Test Track. The Safari can get bumpy. On Winnie there is a part where you bounce with Tigger. Can he do slow rides that are either in a boat or vehicle?

Have him ask his doctor about Scopalamine patches ("Scop Patches"). They go just behind the ear. One patch lasts for 3 days and they are quite effective. But they do require a prescription. They have very, very few drug interactions - very safe.

I took a non-drowsy dramamine pill, that was just ginger in pill form, every morning before we left the hotel. It worked for me. My motion sickness comes from simulator rides and rides like Mission to Mars could ruin a whole day. The ginger pills worked great for me.
