Motion Sickness Medication?

DD & I will be flying soon & I dread the Dramamine hang-over. Even the "less-drowsy" Dramamine gives me a yucky feeling, but it's still better than flying without it. Does anyone know of a different medication with no drowsy side effects?

I take meclizine for a vertigo disorder. Its perscription, so might have to ask your dr. The trick is to take only half a pill, it still works for my neausea but doesn't make me tired like the full strength.

I used Bonine on a cruise. It didn't make me out of it like dramamine does. I think they last either 12 or 24 hours too.

We use Meclizine for all kinds of motion things from amusement park rides, airplanes and cruises! It is the active ingredient in Bonine but you can get it much cheaper through your local pharmacy. In my state at least it does NOT require a prescription but IS usually held behind the pharmaceutical counter at my local grocery store. It comes in 2 different strengths either 12.5 mg or 25 mg. If you get ill but not deathly ill I'd get the 12.5 and then cut it in 1/2 or 1/3's to take the edge off but not get wiped out. I'd also suggest taking it a few days before you are scheduled to fly to get it into your system. Our ped said we could give it to our kids as young as 6 but you may want to ask your ped. Another option is to maybe try either the wristbands or the relief bands. They are homeopathic which stimulate a pressure point in your wrists and theoretically keeping you from being sick. Many cruisers swear by them but my pressure points are too deep so they don't work. If you are interested in what they are you can go to

For the sea bands

They are cheaper than the relief band and can usually be purchased at a drugstore or pharmacy or online.

The Relief Band is a little more pricey

Another thing that has been said to help is ginger tablets and candies. You can generally get them at any GNC and they are supposed to help with the funky tummy but no side effects.

Whatever you try make sure you do a trial run at home. The meclizine (the active ingredient in Dram 2 and Bonine) totally wipes me out for 24 hours. The bottle says to take 1-2 tablets and I take one. Perhaps I could try taking 1/2 a tablet, but I won't chance it.

I have candied ginger for our trip and am going to get the ginger capsules/tablets. My DH is the one with more of a problem and I will have him try the ginger out at home.

BTW, if you try the candied ginger it's something that you just nibble on. I bought some the other day and had the bag open. My DH came in, grabbed a piece and popped the whole thing in his mouth. LOL It's a bit on the strong side to pop a whole piece, but I got a good laugh at his expense. :teeth:

Bonine did not make me drowsy at all. And it worked on Mission:Space.

Dramamine makes me very drowsy also. Bonine worked well for me on a cruise that we took. However, recently I bought a "Relief Band" on Ebay. It is AWESOME! It worked for me on "Tower of Terror," which is a ride that usually makes me feel pretty sick (sad, I know). I think that I paid around $65 for it, but I got the one with replaceable batteries.

It works for most kinds of motion sickness/nausea, for me at least. I love not having to remember to take a pill, and not having that drowsy feeling:D BTW, I haven't tried it out on Mission Space...I don't know if I will ever chance that one again. It made me feel SO sick that I don't think any medicine or Relief Band could help me, LOL!

I take meclazine as well. Have for years. It does not make me tired in any way. I take 25 mg 2 times a day. Start the night before the trip.
It is not prescription, but most places keep it behind the counter so you may have to ask for it. It is really inexpensive.

I take Meclizine too, 25 mg. I got mine at Target. The first time I bought it, it was behind the counter in a huge bottle. I ended up throwing half away, because I didn't use it all before it expired. When I went to buy it again, she showed me out to the area by the Dramamine. They now sell the Meclizine in a purple package marked Motion Sickness Relief. It's not as good of a deal as the large bottle I got before, but it was enough to last me for two trips.

Thanks All for the info. I'll look into & test the Bonine and/or Meclizine before this trip. The Relief Band sounds awesome too. From the way I read the posts, these are reuseable with batteries. If so, I may go ahead and invest in one as we plan to cruise again next fall. When I was on board, the Sea Calm worked wonders, but don't know where to purchase it from.

Hope everyone has a beautiful week! I'm on a 2-week count-down for my surprise visit back to DW with 3-year old DD. Woo-hoo!!!!

Diane, if you buy a Relief Band on Ebay, be sure to ask the seller if it's the version with the replaceable batteries. The auction may explicitly state this, but ask if it doesn't. There is a version that you throw away after the batteries die, too. I didn't want this one, as I use it quite a bit. It really does work awesome for me!
