Motion Sickness Bags Are Now Being Handed out To Mission Space Riders

Well, I rode M:S several times on our last trip and I can say without a doubt that Disney is not handing out motion sickness bags to riders. Now, if someone walked up to a CM and said they usually experience motion sickness problems but would like to ride would the CM be able to produce a bag? Probably, but that isn't what the linked report says. IMHO the report is inaccurate and misleading.

Actually, you can say without a doubt that Disney WAS not handing out motion sickness bags to its riders. I believe this practice just started up in the last few days. Also, the report only claims the bags were offered to guests. I don't see how thats misleading. I admit that I may have inadvertantly been misleading by using the term "handing out" though.

Anybody out there in Florida know more? When did they start offering the bags and are they offered to everyone?

Perhaps you are right. We need a real time report.

I'm curious as to how they are offering them and explaining them if there has been a change in the last week. For them to be offered to everybody you'd think that the pre-flight instruction must involve some mention. I doubt the CapComm instructions have changed. That would leave it to a live CM to announce the availabilty of the bags once people have been assigned a number? I just don't see it. My guess is that bags might be made available discretely for the occasional guest who inquires.....................which is why I'd view it as misleading and irresponsible for the reporters to present it as they did. Then again.................I could be wrong.

So who has ridden in the last day or two........................or who that's local wants to take a research ride for us?

I'll probably drag myself down to the World one of these days, and I'll check. I haven't had any problems with people getting sick in the capsules I was riding in, but I think handing out the bags is a good idea - I mean, who enjoys being puked on?
The only problem I see are the restraints - those may make it difficult to actually bring the bag up to your face.

My wife and I rode it two days ago (12/14) - they were not handing out motion sickness bags at that time.

We really enjoyed the ride, but the way.

I have also not seen this. I have also never witnessed ANYONE getting sick at Mission Space in my 30+ visits to the attraction. ( I am sure people do, I just havent experienced it).

I'll preface this by saying I love coasters, the faster the better. I am not one of those :Rock-n-roller Coaster is the end of Advanced Disney Civilization as We Know It." RnR, ToT, TestTrack, all of them I love and rode over and over when we went this month.

That being said, M:S, contrary to what has been reported here, is not an adventurous good time like RnR, ToT, TT, or any of the Mountains.

If you get motion sickness at all, then there is a good chance you will get off of this ride feeling queasy for the rest of your stay at Epcot. How do I know? 10 of us rode it, all at the same time, and 9 out of 10 felt like..err...dog doo doo...the rest of the day.

No, we did not throw up.
No, we did not fall down screaming in agony.
No, we did not write up guest complaint cards.
No, we did not run to the nearest CM and voice loudly our dissatisfaction.

We just did not ride the dang ride again. And we went back to Epcot two more days after that.

I even tried to space out the sickness inducing rides (I love Star Tours, but as has been reported numerous times, Body Wars is a rougher ride). We rode Body Wars, then Cranium Command, then played around in what used to be known as the Wonders of Life Pavilion THEN went through Ellen's Universe of Energy...that's a couple of hours between riding BW and M:S, and I still felt horrible.

I know, I know, I'll be dismissed as another purveyor of gloom and doom (ignoring my comments on other threads about the success of Mickey's Philarmagic and Wishes for instance), but ride this ride at your own risk. There is a good chance that the G-forces induced in this ride will hamper your enjoyment of the ride.

Of course, that being said, next time we go, I will attempt it again. I am a sucker for punishment.

airlarry. I'm not going to assail your opinion in any manner because certainly we feel and expeience different things under various types of pressure...But my point here is that you cannot state that "if you have problems with motion sickness, this ride will give you problems," because I DO have motion sickness problems, I rode Cal. Screamin' (which isn't considered a real beast) twice in a row and was a wreck for two days. M:S I have had no problem with (other than anxiety)...

I think this ride more than most, is going to pretty much be a person to b person tpe thing...pirate:

I think the pirate is probably right. Everything I have heard is that there is no way to predict whether this ride will make you sick or not. A pre-disposition towards motion sickness does not appear to be a dependable predictor in this area. I know Mission Space certainly appears to be the type of attraction that will automatically initiate my cookie ejection sequence, but I plan to try it anyway.

I doubt the barf bags would be there at all if they hadn't experienced more trouble than usual with this attraction, but from the reports here, it appears Disney Kidds is right. They are not making a big deal about it and the bags may have been available for a long time, but you probably have to know to ask for them.

Just heard an ABC live report supossedly from EPCOT,about the bags being handed out on the radio. Maybe they just started today and maybe just today to make it pubicaly known.

Personally, I will never go on it again. I didn't throw up but it did kill the rest of the day for me. I was fine until that stupid avoid the stuff on Mars jerking around. Why do all the simulatrs have to do something like this? I know, because there are thos that like it.

I too was fine until the "Mars jerking around" part and the cliff.

I couldn't tell if it was the motion doing it or the video causing it.

Any chance that the mission might change in the future like the drop sequences change on TOT?

Do you think the puke bags have Mickey on them so I can put it in my scrapbook (assuming I don't utilize it ;) )

The next thing you know they'll replace the visuals with re-runs of sitcoms, have a boring Mission Space magazine and serve lousy food in the simulator! Maybe if you ride enough times, you'll earn points redeemable for a free snowglobe. :hyper:

How about a virtual ride through "Horizons"??

Just read on another thread on another board that the bags were available beginning Friday and that they hang in the simulator (two on the right and two on the left) in the event someone should have the need to spill thier protien. Sounds like they are there but not really talked about. So yes, it seems they are available. It doesn't really look like they are being "offered" or "handed out".

If true, then agreed, if they are in sight and available, that does not mean "handed out".

But it still seems fairly significant, don't you think?

Serious question:

If Disney installed the same "puke bag hander outer" or whatever we end up calling these things on some other attractions, would the same sort of controversy come up?

Would that somehow make the attraction more or less attractive to anyone here?

I really don't see how this really matters at all. I would not be more or less apt to try an attraction because I see a bag dispenser on the wall when I sit down.

Some other parks might think that now they can put in barf bags on some half lame new ride just to lure in the thrill crowd. Heck, there might even be a whole marketing campaign tailored around just that fact.

For all we really know, this is what Disney is actually doing now.

Mission Space, now even more pukerific!

This is the first ride Disney has ever offered sickness bags for. The idea of getting sick is not magical, and I doubt Disney would want to promote the possibility of this by hanging the bags in the vehicles. The fact that they waited several months before they started offering the bags makes me think they were trying to avoid that option.

Extreme thrill rides are not supposed to nausiating. You wont find a barf bag dispensor in Incredible Hulk for example, and that is a very extreme ride. Thrll ride manufacturers work very hard to avoid crossing the line from minor butterflys in the stomach into full blown nausia. If a ride gets a reputation for making people sick (even if its only a small percentage of riders), it can quickly become unpopular. We had a ride at a local Six Flags that got such a reputation (the Joker's Revenge at Fiesta Texas). After just one season, the ride was a ghost town. Despite a very elaborate queue and theming, no one ever rode this ride becuase everyone knew of its reputation for making you want to hurl. They tore it out last season due to lack of ridership.

Nausia on a Thrill ride is bad news and, in a Family park like Epcot, its really bad news. I can promise you, someone somewhere is desperately trying to find a fix for this before their new 100 million dollar attraction gets a bad reputation and becomes a ghost town. I honestly hope they succeed. A lot of effort went into this attraction and I would hate to see it end up as a failure which Eisner could point to as an example of why they should not be building expensive e-tickets anymore.

I rode M:S, looked all around, turned my head- basically all the "don'ts"...it had zero effect on me. DW is VERY prone to motion sickness-can't even read while being a passenger in a car- and the Body Wars/ Star Tours rides really screw her up, she closes her eyes thru most of those two. She did M:S. She did not get sick, but had an experience similar to airlarry's. She just felt "off", but never felt as if she was going to puke. She will not go back on it.

Hmmmm.... maybe we can collect the bags as memento's of each trip.

PS: I've seen people getting off TT that I wouldn't went to get too close to.

The new Mission Space theme song, Sung to the Tune of "Celebrate the Future Hand in Hand" from the Disney's Millenium Celebration

A magical space ride
Is waiting just for you
Come ride on Mission Space now
You'll spin until you spew
All of of us together getting dizzy
We'll all ride together till we toss our cookies

Put your hands on your barf bag
Pull yourself together and try not to hurl
When your inner ear relaxes
You wont feel quite so bad
Come celebrate the future
Bag in hand
Come celebrate the future
Bag in hand
