Has anyone who has birds had this problem?
I bought a much too large bag of food for my birds at BJ's and I wound up getting inundated with little moths in the bag. i bombed the room the big bag of seed was in with a Raid flying insect bomb and it took care of all the moths in that room. A few got out into the rest of the house but over the next few days we got them all with the flyswatter.
I tossed it out in the yard and for a few weeks I had some very happy crows and sparrows.
I went to the pet store and was told that there are moth eggs in most bird seed and if it is kept too long the moths will hatch.
Well I have been buying small bags of seed at the pet store every other week now so I won't have that problem. I bought some seed on July 20th and this morning when I tried to open the little plastic bag it was full of moths.
Anyone else know what I can do? I have moths everywhere. They are very tiny but they fly everywhere and land all over the table etc... I can't bomb the entire house so we are on flyswatter patrol again. Peggie

I hate them! This has happened to us a few times over the years. We have a parrot and occasionaly the eggs or actual moth is already in the feed. The best way to avoid this is to either freeze the seed until a day before using it or make sure its in an air tight container.

They are called grain or flour moths and they love bird food! They are just awful arent they? Very annoying buggers.

Oh and since they like to fly at night and lay dormant during the day make sure your cereals and any other pet foods are in air tight containers too and also any flours. Once their source of food is cut off they will slowly lessen and shortly after be gone totally.

It's horrible and so hard to get out of your pantry. I know from personal experience. Bring your birdfood home. Put it into a ziplock freezer bag or two and freeze it. This will solve the problem.

wow I used to have birds for years and I never had a problem with this. I haven't had them in about a year and a half (ever since my last one died) I'd love more, but we have two cats.

We also kept our seed inthe freezer and never had any probems.

Fosters and smith's bird catolog has moth traps works like a charm,

Id be really careful usuing anything like raid around birds.

They go from the bird food to people food, so we put the traps in the kitchen too.
when Hope sees one she tries to catch it.

I haven't had any problems with those in FLorida, but Tenn. we did. I too froze it up there.

Here I don't. I just keep it in a container with a lid.

We always put bird food in a giant tupperware bowl (with a lid of course) and put it in the fridge. Never had a problem that way.

I have been buying bird seed from Walmart and lowes for years and never had a problem. We buy the large bag and put it in a large storage container. Maybe switch brands? :confused3
