Hi all, another birth certificate question. My daughter's birth certificate has the raised seal and says it is a legal certification. My son's is completely different. His is a Mother's Certificate. It says ---- This is to certify that a copy of the origianl certificate of the birth of your child has been filed in the office of the city health department. There is no raised seal. Can I use this or do I need to get a copy of the original???? Next I need to get a copy of dh's birth certificate and mine. How many weeks does it usually take to get a copy. Thanks everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes -- you will need the original birth certificate or a certified copy. What you have does not sound like it would be legite for your son.

If you live near the city of birth you can just pick it up. The cost at my town hall is $5. If you do not just call the city/town clerk and ask them how long it will take to process. You might need to mail them a check along with the request. At our town hall we just call the clerk. We pay the fee when we pick it up,and the BC is all set and waiting for us. L

The "Mother's Certificate" is NOT sufficient. Order a certified copy of the original from your county health dept. That's what ya need!!

This sounds like what my first two sons had. Technically it was called an "Abstract" For some reason San Diego County only issued Abstracts during the time my first two sons were born. Now they issue the real thing. The Abstracts have worked fine for us on all our previous cruises and vacations. However, we have been contemplating getting passports and since fees go up on the 19th we decided to go ahead and get the passports. The Abstracts are not considered "official" so I had to go to the County Recorder's office to get official birth certificates. All I had to do was fill out the paperwork requesting a copy and bring along the Abstracts to "exchange" for the official birth certificates. I did not have to pay the $16 per birth certificate fee. Hope this helps.
