ROME (Reuters) - The mother-in-law from hell is the butt of jokes and comedies the world over.
In Italy, she is officially a cause for divorce.
The country's highest appeals court on Thursday upheld a ruling that granted a woman from Vasto in southern Italy divorce on the grounds of "excessive and inappropriate interference of the husband's parents in the private life of the couple."
"My husband was his mother's slave. He would hang on her every word while she criticized everything about me, my make-up, my diet, the way I was bringing up my daughter," the woman told the court.
The woman was awarded custody of her daughter and a generous alimony to compensate her for not being allowed to work after she was married.
The ex-husband has returned to live with his mother.

You're welcome, thelk4...:D

that last line really made me LOL!!!!

I guess I should consider myself lucky that I get along with my mother-in-law! :)

a mass migration to Italy for divorces! My MIL is a PITA, but as she lives in VA and we don't, we get to communicate by phone only, so it's not so bad any more. She has bad mouthed me to DH more than once, but he ignored it. Still, I am glad for the 2800 miles of seperation.

I didn't think the post was funny at all - I could relate!:(

Actually, the problem wasn't with the mother-in-law, the problem was with the woman's woosie husband who didn't have the you-know-whats to stand up to his overbearing, obnoxious, controlling mother.

She's better off getting rid of the wimp. Getting rid of the MIL is an added benefit...the "icing on the cake" so to speak.

This is funny!

But anyone who has this big of a problem with a MIL after the wedding probably wasn't looking at things realistically before the wedding!

Absolutely correct! I have a MIL from Hell. She made the first few years of our marriage a huge struggle and DH was pulled this way and that... he's always been someone who wants to please everybody. Luckily BEFORE marriage we had some good counsel from the minister who married us (and was a cousin of DH so he KNEW what the MIL was like without me having to bring it up) - so DH needed to make it clear to MIL that his marriage would take priority over her demands.... it was a struggle and took a few years... and there are still occassional incidents but we pretty much don't let her impact our lives.

Sounds like that woman made a wise decision when she decided to divorce that guy. I hope he and his mother are very happy.

This made me laugh, it truly did.

bsnyder - unfortunately not always the case. My dh was not really that close to his parents when we married although he did visit them occasionally and talk on the phone several times a month (I'd consider that pretty normal). Once we had kids he had a huge desire to reconnect with them and the troubles began. Sure there were signs the inlaws were strange, what was a surprise to me was that dh would do an about face and want them to be superinvolved in our lives.

I agree the fault lies with the husband for letting her get away with it, however that doesn't mean the MIL isn't a PINA.

Of course the MIL is a PIA. But if limits are set, there should be no problem. If hubby/son hasn't got the you-know-whats to set limits, then the problem is bigger than a PIA MIL.

Having not read the thread completely, but knowing my MIL...the answer should be
YES

LOLOL This is a riot! I wonder if this applies to MIL on the wifes side??? My brothers MIL is from hell, its on her return address. She is plain evil!! I think im gonna send this to him. Problem is if he tries to put his foot down with his wife, she makes it out to be his fault and that he is a bad dh! UGGGGGG please.
