Had a few different opportunities over the last few weeks to get a lot of photography in. I volunteered as a chaperone for DS's 3rd grade field trip to Plymouth Plantation 2 weeks ago and got to take a bunch of photo's there. Then 2 weekends ago I did my 3rd annual portrait shoot for our local Down syndrome family group on Saturday then on Sunday I shot a charity hockey game for the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress. It was a group of guys who had to raise a minimum of $2000 to play in the game against the Boston Bruins Alumni.

Took me a while to get all the photo's processed and uploaded as I ended up with well over 1,000 shots from those 3 days.

Here are some of my highlight shots....

Here is my setup for the portrait shoot... 2 SB-600 flashes shot into 24"x24" softboxes. I used my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens and triggered the flashes using the popup flash as commander and the SB-600 as slaves. I have a flash block for the popup so no light comes from the camera. I had 20 families participate this year.

For this shoot I rented the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRII... I'm now in love!!! LOL

Here are the MDSC All Stars who as a group raised over $50,000

The gentleman is the goalie gear is not former Bruin goalie. He is the father of a child with Down syndrome and this year he was the biggest money raiser, raising over $7,000. For doing so he got the privilege of playing with the former Bruins players

The former Bruin's players posing with the Down syndrome advocates who sang the national anthem. Some notable names from the Bruins who played.... Rick Middleton, Ken Hodge (member of the 1970 & 72 Stanley Cup champ teams), Bob Sweeney, Reggie Lemelin, Bobby Miller & HOF'er Brad Park.

Shooting hockey in local arena's is not easy. Lighting isn't great and the action is fast. I was mostly using ISO1600 at f/2.8 and was getting about 1/200th or so for a shutter.

Great shots!

The hockey ones are especially clear despite the constant movement and rink lighting!

:thumbsup2

Those are all great Kyle. Congrats on all raising so much money.
Sure looks as though everybody had a lot of fun!! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

You did a terrific job with all of these Kyle. The portraits are wonderful!

Awesome shots Kyle! I have a question though. You say:

I have a flash block for the popup so no light comes from the camera.

What is this? I have wondered how to do that as I can fire multiple flashes with the Canon 7D and don't want the on camera flash to add flash to the shots.

Awsome shots! I think probably half the work I do is for charity or to help raise money, we love helping out - their is nothing better!

How do you like those soft boxes?

Andy

Nikon has this little gadget that is basically a light shield. They call it an IR Panel. :confused3

SG-31R IR Panel for Built-In Flash

Amazon and Adorama sell it for about $12. It fits into the hot shoe and it has an arm that arches up and a little black panel hangs down in front of the pop up flash. Great little gadget. The flashes get triggered by the light coming out of the side of the pop-up. This thing works PERFECT.

I don't know if it would fit on to your hot shoe. Since Canon doesn't have many bodies that trigger slave flashes via the pop-up, I don't know if they have a similar gadget.

It fits pretty snug. It has a little metal thing that keeps it from falling out of the hot shoe, but it is SOOOOO hard to lift it up to slide the arm out when your done that I had to break the metal pin off.

I always thought - but haven't really tested - that when using an on camera flash as a wireless trigger that it actually flashes a split second before the wireless and the shutter and doesn't add any light itself. In my limited use I would say that's how it works on the Sony models anyway and would have thought it's that way for other brands also.

BTW - nice pictures Kyle!!!

Longtime lurker and periodic poster brought out of lurking to say great job on all three events- photo shoot, fundraising and hockey pics.

Your hockey pics with the Nikon 70-200 have just convinced me to put that at the top of my wish list and figure out a way to make it happen.

Hockey pics have to be hard to get with the odd lighting and constant motion- you made them it look easy! Naturally, I'm sure it is your overall skill as a photographer with just a little help from the lens! :thumbsup2 None the less- time to start saving for that lens.

Thanks for sharing!

This is excellent- the pictures and the story.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I haven't had a whole lot of time this year to get out and take lots of photos. This time of the year is always good for getting lots of shots. I'm really enjoying doing the portraits, which is a pretty good thing because I got an email from youngest DS' daycare asking me if I'd be interested in doing the portraits for the school next year. COOL!!

I don't shoot a lot of hockey. In fact this game (and last years) are the only hockey I've done since I went to a Bruins game about 17 years ago. I'm not much of a hockey fan, but I do love taking sports shots.

The 70-200mm f/2.8 VR is pretty much the only way to go for hockey. It is a SPECTACULAR lens. Super extra wicked fast focusing and very sharp. For now I can only afford to rent this lens for a week each year at about $130 a week. This lens is on my list, but it is number 2 right now behind the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 which I hope to be able to get late winter/early spring next year.
