Most Prized Scrapbook Supply?

no need to feel sorry for us! Hermie dots are one of the few things that are actually cheaper over here in the UK!
I can't live without them either- I couldn't imagine sticking something down and not being able to move it - I always change my mind!

Bev

PS - I think I like being called cute;) I never realised brilliant was a cute word! but someone commented in Florida when I said we had a brilliant day at Blizzard Beach, so I guess it must be!

So I think you guys are 'talking' me into the Xyron. If I want it primarily for die cuts, punchies, letters... (small things), which should I get? And would I be able to run vellum through that too or would I need a larger one for that.

Looking to get out of this as cheap as possible ;)

Are the refill's expensive, and does anyone know about the quality of the testing as far as being acid/lignin free?

I LOVE MY XYRON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because of all the high praise everyone has give the xyron on this thread, I decided to buy the little X one. I don't know how I ever did paper piecing or punch art without it! I definately want the bigger one for Christmas! It is so awesome! Frankly, the little one is a great deal at $10 with its refils only costing $5. I love mine, and it is great to start with. If you do punch art or use lots of punches in your albums or swap stuff, the little one is perfect! Do as you like My~Rumbly~Tumbly, but I think the little one is a great place to start. That way, if you don't like it, you are only out $10 (plus tax), and ig you do like it, you can always graduate to the larger size! That's how I started (two days ago, mind you! tee-hee!)

Good Luck!

I agree, start with the little one. It will take anything upto about 1 1/2 inches wide. (Maybe a little less than that.)

So you could do strips of vellum, or infact strips of anything. Punchies, letters etc. I really like the little one because there's not a lot of waste, if you are doing small things like punch art.

It is labeled as acid-free. (lignin is only relevant to paper, not glue)

Just to agree with everyone again, (and cos I just love it here on this board LOL) - the little Xyron is perfect for small stuff. I cut out some curly letters the other day that would have been difficult to glue - even with my trusted Hermie dispenser, so through the Xyron - problem solved! So quick and easy.

If I have more than 3 or 4 letters to do though - I use the bigger Xyron (the 500). I just line all the letters or punchies up side by side in front of the roller, and just ease them all in just under the edge, and turn the handle slowly and they all get taken through in one go - this saves a lot of wastage.

And...........as for attaching Vellum - well, it has got to be the perfect answer. No glue shows through - it works really well.

I used to attach all my vellum by Eyelets because of the glue showing through - Not any more! I love little strips of torn vellum across the bottom of the cards I make with the greeting on - the Xyron is just brilliant for this. :) :) :)

My~Rumbly~Tumbly, after you have played with the small one for a while I would advise you to go ahead and get the 900. The reason I say this is because sooo many people start with a 510 and then end up getting the 900 anyway and at that point you've bought two. The advantages are not only in the larger size (9") but the cartriges are easily interchangeable. It also has more types of cartriges available (permanent, repositionable, laminate/magnet, double-sided laminate).

As far as cost is concerned, I used my Joanns 50% off coupon at AC Moore and my final cost was $49. Michaels has theirs for $119 so I wouldn't buy it there if you have a choice. The refills are about $30 for 40" and again I use a 50% off coupon for those. I don't think it's that bad. I don't use it for everything, but it comes in handy. I actually am most excited about the magnet refill. That's the reason I bought it. Did you see the picture magnet card in BH's card book? :) Too cool.

I think the 510 has all those cartridges too - I haven't tried them yet, but mine came with a lamination and a magnetic cartridge.

I do have to say though, that removing the cartridges isn't easy - mine ran out last night and I tried to remove it, I thought i was going to break it. Of course, I didn't read the instructions, so maybe there is an easier way?

Where are you getting the Joanne coupons? I never see them in th paper...are you on their mailer? Email?

Hi Wiggle

Not DVCajun - but I happen to just be looking through the book :)

In Becky Higgins new Card Making book, she has a Christmas Card on Page 111 which is a Family Photo that has been run throught the Xyron using the Magnet Laminate and attached the Photo on the card as a gift. It is really a smashing idea :)

:) :) :)

I'm not DVCajun, but I get my Joann coupons through the mail. My mil sometimes gets them in her paper, but we don't. So I signed up on the mailing list and they come pretty frequently. :)

Yeah, what she said. ;)

You have to sign up for their mailing list (or "preferred customer list") at the store. Then they send their sales fliers to your house and there's usually a 50% off coupon with it. They also usually have a 40% coupon for online purchases. I just used one of those to buy the Navigator. :) :) :)

Just got the Michaels ad for next week; the xyron refills are 50% off; there's a new 50)% off one item coupon too!
