Day 8 - Part 7
After a little relaxation, some cooling off, a change of clothes, and a bunch of animal pictures, we caught a bus to the Magic Kingdom. We left somewhere between 5:30 and 5:45, and had almost no wait for a bus. Similarly, at the Magic Kingdom we only had a very short wait for the boat, so we had great transportation mojo on this particular evening. After a moment, we were seeing this.
No, that’s not where we were going. But we were looking at the Grand Floridian from our boat en route to For Wilderness at a quarter after 6, so we were in great shape to make the 7:15 showing of Hoop de Doo Revue.
Around 6:30 we were arriving at Pioneer Hall.
We signed in and were instructed to get our picture taken at their official Hoop de Doo picture-taking-spot amongst some wooden crates and other old-timey items. After the picture was taken, I tried to give the photographer our Photopass card, but he said that they don’t use Photopass for this. It would all be explained inside. Hmmm, okay.
Now we had nothing to do but wait. It was starting to sprinkle, so we took cover and stood on the porch area to the left of the entrance to Pioneer Hall. James and I were soon bored standing there so we walked around the building, where Trail’s End restaurant is, I believe. On the porch at the far end of the building, we found some empty chairs and a checker board. James begged me to play, bragging about how good he is. Naturally, I had to whoop him. Not once, but twice, because he thought that the first whooping was some kind of a fluke. And I’ll tell you, it was a good old fashioned whooping…I was making triple jumps to get a king, the whole she-bang. It was downright ugly. Hey, I’ve gotta enjoy it now. One of these days he just might beat me at some of these games.
We wandered back to the porch where the ladies were waiting, and a little after 7 we were allowed to enter Pioneer Hall. I’d splurged for the Category 1 seating and we were in the front row, all the way to the left side of the stage. They were pretty good seats, and the kids loved being that close. Our server took our drink orders, and Judy and I both got sangrias.
A guy came around with our picture. He said, “You recognize those people?” And I was impressed by what a really, really nice picture it was. It was one of the best we’d taken all week. But it cost an extra $30! The price didn’t matter all that much, I was just seeing red that it was additional. I mean, I’d already shelled-out big bucks for the Photopass CD, and category 1 seating at the show. There was no way that I was going to pay
more money. I declined the picture and sent the guy on his way.
Soon the servers started bringing out some food, starting with salad and cornbread.
It appears that Marlene is using mental telepathy to assist Lauren in serving herself some salad.
We thought the cornbread was really good, but the salad was overdressed.
Here’s James checking out the menu.
I got in the corner, behind our table, to take a picture of the whole room.
Then I lined-up the family for a portrait.
You can see that we were right up against the stage.
While waiting for the show to start, I noticed the stage lights mounted up on the ceiling and took a picture especially for Great Biscuit, who is a big fan of stage lighting.
Soon there was a ruckus in the back of the room as the actors entered the hall, with “Six Bits” Slocum (who steals the show with his comedy relief) banging on a drum. The first song they perform is the All-States song. When they got to Pennsylvania they rhymed it with “Wouldn’t blame ya.” As in, we wouldn’t blame you for wanting to come here from Pennsylvania. Hey!
At one point in the song, and I don’t remember what he rhymed it with, but Six Bits pointed at me and said, “I hope he’s stayin’ sober!”
I wrote in my notes that another line Six Bits directed at me was, “I’ll bet you wish you looked as good as me.” But again, I don’t remember what he rhymed it with. He may be saying it to me in this next picture.
This is Six Bits and Jim Handy. This picture cracks me up. Six Bits is making a face, but I think that Jim Handy’s puzzled look is even funnier.
I think this lovely character posing with James is Flora Long. She’s hot in a “Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island” sort of way.
This character is Dolly. She provides the female comedy relief.
I think these characters are Claire de Lune and Johnny Ringo.
Six Bits and Dolly dancing right beside our table.
I told James that I was writing this chapter of the trip report and he said, “Oh, I loved that show!” Then he said, “Do you remember when Six Bits spit on me?” I was like “What?!” He said, “Yeah, he came up to me when he was walking out and he said something to me, and a bunch of spit hit me right in the face.” So apparently it was completely unintentional, but I surely don’t remember that!
Maybe Six Bits should change his name to “Big Spits”!
And here you thought the moisture mentioned in the trip report title was just provided by humidity, perspiration, and precipitation. Oh no, my friend. Add saliva to the list.
Look at the kids up in the balcony, having the time of their lives.
