Most Expensive / Moist Exhausting Continued - Final thoughts and wrap-up

DVC is pretty hard - I spent 40 minutes on the phone talking to member services just now due to possible changes to trip plans... (more to be revealed soon). Now my head feels all weired. But at least the lady I spoke to was very friendly! :goodvibes

It just looks so incredibly complicated and scary!! Even if I had the money, it would seem like I'd have to spend decades studying what I was getting into- then again, I still debate whether it's attractive to me.... I mean, NO POLY??!! No mods??

Voices of Liberty is one of my absolute favorite must-dos in all of WDW. I wonder how many singers they have altogether? The only one from your group that I saw this weekend is the tallest woman, the blond in the red dress. And I've seen her a lot.

I couldn't agree more. I've often said as much myself. :p

My pix show other singers as well. They must have alternates that fill in or what not.

avoua aeur, whatever nvlivu ruerua! :lmao:

Great update! I think I smiled the whole time I was reading it. The stories about the kids are excellent, too. And what amazing views! We walked out and checked out the view from Jambo House when we were there in February and my husband was just sort of like, oh, yeah, now I get it. We have to stay here! :lmao: I cannot believe that you put together a photograph like the one you did of your view. So cool. This trip made me realize what a ridiculously inept photographer I am. :lmao:

That "if you cancel within 30 days your points will go into holding" thing really scared me to death the first time I heard it... Thanks to the DVC boards here, I feel I got quite a good course in basic DVC - I guess I am able to communicate, but am still far from fluent. The advantage for me is that DVC is a language which is related to legal babble in which I got a degree and am quite fluent. And as with all other languages, it really helps if you already know one from the same family.

I think most of it is pretty straightforward, really.

No "holding" situations for me - only the problem of scarce availability at my home resort during Food & Wine... :goodvibes

Well, that's good. The "no holding situations" part, I mean. Yeah, those Epcot resorts are notoriously difficult to get during Food & Wine unless you have the home resort booking advantage.

The story of James & the mister was too funny - can you tell it to me again??

What, you've never heard it? Well, this one time Judy had a booth at a local festival, and it was realllly hot, see. So James goes to a vendor a couple of booths down from Judy who was selling cheap, crappy toys.....

Zzzzzz.

Great pictures of all the animals viewed from your balcony.
I'm glad Marlene was able to get someone to pick up!

Thanks Amy!

Glennbo Technical Advisor...DUDE! I'm putting that on my resume!

Only use it on jobs that you really want to get.....that's powerful stuff, right there.

0 Judys!

Oh darn, I'm too late. I need to live here more.

AWwww, it's so sweet that you got some special father-children bonding time with each of them. I can't remember the last time I got that with my parents, but I do LOVE it every time. It also gives me something to hold over my siblings, but hey, they get to see my parents EVERY DAY.

Love your tribute to Winkers. That's golden. I really need to remind the guys in the group to take that shot on our next trip.

Wow, she actually got someone to pick up! That's awesome! She looks like she's having SO MUCH fun, it makes me happy.

You don't look so hot and sweaty here, did the Photopass gal powder your nose?

I guess you weren't looking at my shirt.

Voices of Liberty is one of my absolute favorite must-dos in all of WDW. I wonder how many singers they have altogether?

You heard her everyone...now, All Together: "I wonder how many singers they have?"

That's too sad. :sad2: I think we are getting close to that already with Jenna at age 10.

I suppose it's bound to happen.

I love this picture!!!:goodvibes

Thanks. It makes me :)

but I think that guy over there is speaking Klingon.... oh wait, no, I believe it's DVC. Its so hard to tell with romance languages.

:rotfl2: Good one! Hey, it's good to hear that it's a Romance language!

I couldn't agree more. I've often said as much myself. :p

Oh brother.

It just looks so incredibly complicated and scary!! Even if I had the money, it would seem like I'd have to spend decades studying what I was getting into- then again, I still debate whether it's attractive to me.... I mean, NO POLY??!! No mods??

No, it's not that hard. The mods are how you extend your trip, at the beginning or the end, with that Disney math. :teacher:

My pix show other singers as well. They must have alternates that fill in or what not.

Okay, I'm starting to wonder how many there are now too.

avoua aeur, whatever nvlivu ruerua! :lmao:

In the immortal words of Han Solo...."Laugh it up, fuzzball."

Great update! I think I smiled the whole time I was reading it.

Aw, that's one of the nicest compliments ever!

The stories about the kids are excellent, too. And what amazing views! We walked out and checked out the view from Jambo House when we were there in February and my husband was just sort of like, oh, yeah, now I get it. We have to stay here! :lmao:

Awesome! Our first stay there was in 2001, after 9/11, and we got upgraded due to the low overall demand at Disney (they had actually closed Dixie Landings to save money). When I first heard that our reservation had been changed, I was like "oh great"....but we loved it!

I cannot believe that you put together a photograph like the one you did of your view. So cool. This trip made me realize what a ridiculously inept photographer I am. :lmao:

Well, that wasn't the intent at all, but thanks. ;) I just stood there and took a bunch of pictures, scanning the horizon. First, sky and roofs, then buildings, then trees and savanna, and finally the ground. Then, I let the software do the rest in stitching them together. It was that difficult. :upsidedow

0 Judys!

Oh darn, I'm too late. I need to live here more.

Tonight might be a good night to live here.

AWwww, it's so sweet that you got some special father-children bonding time with each of them. I can't remember the last time I got that with my parents, but I do LOVE it every time. It also gives me something to hold over my siblings, but hey, they get to see my parents EVERY DAY.

It was great the way it turned out, that I got to spend some one-on-one time with each of them. Judy didn't get that during the trip, but it seems like she has more opportunity for that at home than I do.

Love your tribute to Winkers. That's golden.

Was that an intentional choice of words?

I really need to remind the guys in the group to take that shot on our next trip.

Should be good! To be honest, I'm surprised we don't see it more on TRs here...so many people have seen it on Winkers' and Jordan's.

Wow, she actually got someone to pick up! That's awesome! She looks like she's having SO MUCH fun, it makes me happy.

She loved that! As you can tell.

Day 7 - Part 8

The hidden meaning of the title for this chapter (which wasn’t all that hidden) should now be apparent since I’ve included some capital letters. Tonight, it’s dinner for 3 at The Wave.

After our little indoor Kidani safari, we came back to our suite and started getting dressed for dinner. Well, those of us who’d be going, which was me, Judy, and DSiL. The kids would be staying here and having a frozen pizza for dinner. We got the pizza started and then began looking through the kitchen cupboards for a hot mitt, so everything’d be ready to go for Lauren once the pizza was done. No hot mitt could be found, so we called for a replacement. As soon as that was delivered, we (Judy, DSiL, and I) left for the bus stop. Our ADR at The Wave was for 6:45, and we made it to the Kidani bus stop at 5:55. I had wanted to allow an hour of travel time, but the whole hot mitt thing put us behind schedule. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a bus, but I think the stop at Jambo House was relatively quick, so were soon on our way. Once we got going, DSiL said, “Thanks for letting me tag along on your ‘date night’ ”. We said, “Oh, no problem”, and it really was ‘no problem’, but I was a little shocked that she said that and called it our ‘date night’. I guess I shouldn’t be…duh, before she joined us it was going to be just the two of us going out to dinner, sans kids. That kind of looks and smells like a date night. But I guess I was shocked because I had been very careful not to call it a ‘date night’ when we were comparing schedules to try to find a time that she could visit us. I didn’t want her to feel like she was intruding.

Anyway, when the bus dropped us off at the Magic Kingdom, we debated on whether to “hoof it” or “monorail it” over to the Contemporary. The ladies didn’t feel like walking (but isn’t it about the same distance from the bus drop-off to the monorail station or to the Contemporary?), so we took the monorail. We boarded, and who did we see in our same car? Judy’s PChef director, who we had dinner with at Boma the night before. They were on their way to eat at California Grill. I took this picture on the monorail at 6:45, which was also our ADR time, so obviously we were going to be a tad late.

IMG_3824-1.jpg

Once we arrived at the Contemporary it took a little searching for us to find The Wave. I really don’t know my way around the Contemporary very well at all. I think the only time I’d been in it before this occasion was in 2009 when we went to the DVC presentation and got a tour of Bay Lake Tower. After a couple of escalator rides, we found the entrance to The Wave at 6:50 -- only 5 minutes late.

IMG_3825.jpg

My notes say that we waited 10 minutes to be seated, but it seems like it was longer. We sat in this funkily-lit area across from the check-in podium.

IMG_3826.jpg

We were seated and our server was Tiffany. I meant to ask for the server that Jenbear recommended, but at that point, I just wanted to eat. After our drink orders were taken, Tiffany brought us some bread. I remember it being pretty good, but my favorite is still the bread at Kona Café, easily.

IMG_3827.jpg

I had to get a picture of the dining room. I hoped I didn’t creep anybody out. By taking a picture, I mean. Hopefully, I don’t creep anybody out by just being there. Hey, people I’ve had DIS-meets with feel free to chime in here. As long as the news is good. Hello? Anyone?

IMG_3828.jpg

I think my SiL may have skipped an appetizer, but Judy and I got this: “The Wave Appetizer for Two”. I had to look at the menu on allears.net to refresh my memory, but on the left are sautéed sea scallops and on the right are lump crab Florida rock shrimp cakes.

IMG_3830.jpg

Judy loved the scallops, which have to be cooked just so…not overcooked, not undercooked. She declared these to be “perfect”!

I don’t remember what I ordered, and I think the menu on allears.net has been updated since my trip, but whatever it was I ordered, it’s not what arrived. I think I ordered a less-expensive cut of beef, but the filet arrived.

IMG_3831.jpg

Judy asked, “Didn’t you order something else?” I said, “yeah, but this is fine”. Hey, I’m not hard to please. Plus, by this time it was going on 8 o’clock and had been a long time since I’d eaten that sandwich for lunch, sitting in the auto showroom at Test Track. (Remember that? James waving his sandwich around saying, “Are we allowed to eat in here?”) Although I think I had eaten a few leftovers from Whispering Canyon in the suite after Marlene and I got back from our World Showcase tour.

Judy’s entrée, “Today’s Sustainable Fish”. Her sister also got the fish dish. I don’t remember what kind of fish it was, other than “the tasty kind”.

IMG_3832.jpg

They both liked the fish, but they absolutely raved about the veggies and sauce. It looks like the menu is now calling that “edamame stew”.

Overall, The Wave was a fine meal, but considering the expense it didn’t blow us away. I won’t feel like I’m missing anything when I move on to try a different restaurant for our next “date night” in Disney.

We paid-up, packed-up, and made our exit at 8:30. I took a much better focused picture of the sign as we left.

IMG_3834.jpg

After dinner, I wanted to take care of a “never done”, and that was visit the Boardwalk. We walked over to the Magic Kingdom bus stop, more like a depot, and found a Boardwalk/Swan/Dolphin bus. We boarded, sat down, and the driver announced to the bus: “We’re just waiting for a relief driver”. Oh no. After a few minutes, the new guy showed up and he was S-L-O-W. As in molasses in January, in a much different climate than Florida. And of course, he had to load a scooter. The former driver offered to help him with the scooter (can you hear me imploring “Yes! Yes!”), but he declined. :faint: The former driver tipped his hat and skipped off, happy to be done with his shift.

When we were underway, the new driver drove to the Swan, and nobody got off, but we loaded some more people. Then we drove to the Dolphin. There were lots more people waiting, like a whole mob. They’d been waiting a long time and were not happy. The driver let a few people get off before he let anybody else on, but he forgot he had to unload the scooter he’d loaded at the Magic Kingdom. The lady traveling with the poor guy in the scooter had to go around to the front door to tell him. When he finally got around to loading the mob that was waiting to board the bus, he asked everyone on the bus to squeeze back. But the people in the back yelled to him “there’s another Magic Kingdom bus behind you!” (“Numbskull!” That went unspoken, but it definitely hung there in the air.) I said under my breath, “You’re about to get lapped, dude.”

Then he finally started driving again and we arrived at our next stop, which should have been the Boardwalk. He stopped, but made no announcement as to where we were. I tried to look out the windows, but with it being dark outside and having the lights on inside the bus I couldn’t make out what I was seeing. Or, ‘not seeing’ as the case may have been. I asked another rider if this was the Boardwalk, and he said “yes”, so we got off. We walked into the building in front of us, and once inside I realized that it was the Yacht Club! Are you serious?!

I was rather annoyed with the driver, but at least I knew we could walk to the Boardwalk from there. On our walk, we were passed by other people who’d been on the bus with us and they were fuming. One guy sounded like Yosemite Sam, with all the “ricken racken” unintelligible cursing and smoke coming from his ears.

I took this picture of the Boardwalk on our walk over and the timestamp on it is 9:49, nearly an hour and a half after we’d left the Contemporary.

IMG_3837.jpg

We walked past the DVC model of the Boardwalk villas and decided to look through it before they closed at 10. The model looked very nice. I wouldn’t mind staying there someday.

We went back out and walked a little further and saw a juggler who was entertaining the crowd. Although you can’t tell from this picture since his juggling pins aren’t in the air. Maybe he was just parking an airplane?

IMG_3838.jpg

We didn’t watch for very long, since the ladies were getting tired and wanted to get back, so we started making our way to find the Boardwalk bus stop. (The actual Boardwalk bus stop this time.)

One more Boardwalk picture.

IMG_3839.jpg

We literally only spent about 15 minutes walking along the Boardwalk and then out to the bus stop. We called the kids, and they were doing fine. They’d been to the pool and were now back in the suite.

Here’s the Boardwalk sign as seen from the bus stop. This is what I should have seen as we pulled up to the supposed Boardwalk stop earlier.

IMG_3841.jpg

A Magic Kingdom bus was the first to arrive and we debated on taking it rather than waiting for a Downtown Disney bus, but the driver said that his next stops were the Swan and then the Dolphin, so the last guy should have stopped here first! We passed on that bus and got on a Downtown Disney bus a minute or two later. At Downtown Disney, we caught an Animal Kingdom Lodge bus pretty quickly, but it was FREEZING. The A/C was cranked and we were all shivering. When the driver arrived at the West Side of Downtown Disney, he announced that a relief driver would be taking us the rest of the way. Are you kidding me?!

The new driver walked around the bus and kicked the tires, wrote on his clipboard, adjusted the mirrors, and who-knows-what-else, and after about 10 more minutes we were finally on our way again, with the wonderful feeling that the next stop was our last!

We got home (I love calling Kidani “home”) a little after 11, said goodbye to SiL and DN, and hit the hay. Another day in Disney was done.

Up next: Epcot “do over”

I see 5 Judy's.

i am amending to 4 Judy's. I had to go back and double check what DSiL was wearing vs. what Judy was wearing.

Nice update Glenn!

I've been thinking I'd like to try The Wave out next trip, it looks nice inside and your food pics are great! I don't think it odd that you took a pic of the inside of the restaurant, I do that all the time at Disney! Wait, maybe I'm weird too then?:confused3

Oh my, your bus drama is awful! I would've been annoyed, especially with getting off that blasted bus only to find it wasn't even the Boardwalk!:rotfl: And then to encounter another bus driver change on the way back to AKL? I'm thinking that I like taking cabs more and more now!

Sounds like the kids had a great time...pizza and the pool! What's not to love, right?

Oh good, Lauren is finally up and eating!

Andrew and I really want to eat at The Wave, all because the entrance "looked cool", haha. Your dinners looked very nice!

Wooow, what a night with the busses! Two driver switches in one night!!!

And yes, I WAS intentional with my "That's golden" comment.

Mmm, I love scallops. It's great to know they were perfect!

Why no dessert?

Another great update! And since I was so far behind, I got two in one night! :lmao: I think you might be right about the walk from the busses to the monorail at MK, but once you walk across the street to the CR, you do have a rather large parking lot to cross, so in that way, I can undertand taking the monorail. We did that last year when I couldn't figure out where the walkway was!

Isn't the Boardwalk pretty? I would love to stay there sometime. Who knows? Glad to hear that you had such a nice night, even with the bussess.

Oy vey!! What a nightmare bus run squared you had. :scared1: I'm one of those who depending on my mood would have been fuming!

But your meal looked great! Did they charge you for th filet?? or just the cheaper cut that you ordered??

I'm a little sad for you that you spent a whopping 15 minutes at the Boardwalk. It is lovely, esp. at night! But you did get there rather late, and it's hard to just keep on keepin' on after a park day.

Hi Glenn, what a bus nightmare! These are the stories which make me think that having a car at WDW might sometimes be a good idea... When I read your report about the driver change at DTD, I remembered that this happened to me as well in the past. And it is very annoying...

Thanks for the report on the Wave. I still can't make my mind up wether I want to eat there or not. It looks interesting, but not really that special. It kind of feels a bit bland to me - not the taste, but the whole package. I guess that was your impression as well when you say that you aren't planning on returning there anytime soon...

It just looks so incredibly complicated and scary!! Even if I had the money, it would seem like I'd have to spend decades studying what I was getting into- then again, I still debate whether it's attractive to me.... I mean, NO POLY??!! No mods??

I am sure that DVC is not for everyone. :goodvibes But I think it works for me. I don't mind not staying at the mods, I am deluxe girl. I love my interior hallways, I just don't get the American love for exterior hallways, we don't have them here in Germany - neither in appartment buildings. That's why Saratoga and OKW don't have very much appeal to me. And while I love the Poly, I don't think I will ever stay there again unless I get at least a 40% discount. Otherwise I just can't justify the price they ask. And how likely is it that those deep discounts will be around in the future?? It seems that already this year discounts aren't as available as in the past few years. And then one thing I figured: I could always rent out my points and use the money to pay cash for a room at the Poly if I want to! :thumbsup2

Thanks Molly.

Oh nuts. You do it too? ;)

Oh my, your bus drama is awful! I would've been annoyed, especially with getting off that blasted bus only to find it wasn't even the Boardwalk!:rotfl: And then to encounter another bus driver change on the way back to AKL? I'm thinking that I like taking cabs more and more now!

Half of our night was spent on buses. I'm not giving up on them yet...I love the convenience of not having to drive. But it seems like you have 1 or 2 nightmare bus trips every visit.

Sounds like the kids had a great time...pizza and the pool! What's not to love, right?

Oh good, Lauren is finally up and eating!

Exactly! It was a perfect night for them.

Lauren was doing much better.

Andrew and I really want to eat at The Wave, all because the entrance "looked cool", haha. Your dinners looked very nice!

No doubt about it -- they have a cool entrance.

Wooow, what a night with the busses! Two driver switches in one night!!!

I know! What I find odd is that the driver switches occur right in the middle of a run, with passengers sitting on the bus, waiting. You'd think they'd take the bus out of service and go back to a depot to have it checked over, get the tank filled, etc. etc.

And yes, I WAS intentional with my "That's golden" comment.

In that case -- Well played! :thumbsup2

Mmm, I love scallops. It's great to know they were perfect!

Why no dessert?

The scallops got the "Judy stamp of approval".

Oh yeah. No dessert because 1) we were basically full, and 2) the meal had already cost enough.

Two in one night! Woohoo!

You helped jog my memory a little bit....we didn't know exactly where the walkway was, but definitely knew where to catch the monorail, so that factored into our decision.

Isn't the Boardwalk pretty? I would love to stay there sometime. Who knows? Glad to hear that you had such a nice night, even with the bussess.

It sure is.

Yes, it was still a nice night. Sometimes those bus rides can test your patience, but at least we weren't trying to beat a park closing or get to an ADR.

Oy vey!! What a nightmare bus run squared you had. :scared1: I'm one of those who depending on my mood would have been fuming!

Me too. Fortunately, I was in a good mood but that driver was doing all he could to change it.

But your meal looked great! Did they charge you for th filet?? or just the cheaper cut that you ordered??

Oh...yeah, they did. I never said anything to the server. It's all good.

I'm a little sad for you that you spent a whopping 15 minutes at the Boardwalk. It is lovely, esp. at night! But you did get there rather late, and it's hard to just keep on keepin' on after a park day.

It just means we'll have to visit again, when we can do it right!

Hi Glenn, what a bus nightmare! These are the stories which make me think that having a car at WDW might sometimes be a good idea... When I read your report about the driver change at DTD, I remembered that this happened to me as well in the past. And it is very annoying...

I know, and you sit there and second-guess yourself. What if we'd taken the bus to MK instead? But if we'd taken that bus, at every stop to pick up more passengers would we have been thinking that we should have waited for a bus going directly to DTD?

Thanks for the report on the Wave. I still can't make my mind up wether I want to eat there or not. It looks interesting, but not really that special. It kind of feels a bit bland to me - not the taste, but the whole package. I guess that was your impression as well when you say that you aren't planning on returning there anytime soon...

It was okay, and the food was good....but for the money there are several other similarly-priced restaurants that get great reviews. Flying Fish and Jiko come to mind. I can't believe I haven't been to Jiko yet :guilty: . We love Boma so much, that we always go there, but we have to get to Jiko sometime.

I am sure that DVC is not for everyone. :goodvibes But I think it works for me. I don't mind not staying at the mods, I am deluxe girl. I love my interior hallways, I just don't get the American love for exterior hallways, we don't have them here in Germany - neither in appartment buildings. I pretty much agree, except for the "I am a deluxe girl" part. ;)

When you see those rack rate prices and figure what they might be in the future -- :scared1:

I pretty much agree, except for the "I am a deluxe girl" part. ;)

When you see those rack rate prices and figure what they might be in the future -- :scared1:

One thing I have noticed when travelling in the US that while there are many offerings at an afforable price point (cheap motels, family restaurants etc.) there seems to be a much larger luxury market. Really nice places seem to be more expensive than in Europe (well, I guess London, Paris and NYC are about on the same level however). Also there are many more "events" being sold for premium prices. An example at WDW for this is the new Wild Africa Trek. I thought it was pricey at 129 $ per person, but 189 $ is just :scared1:! I am sure that West Europeans don't have that much less money available. But I think many have more vacation days. So possibly Europeans tend to spread out their vacation money more???

Interesting!

Pat, is your final answer 4 Judy's?

Unless that is the top of her head by the juggler!?!?!?

The hand I thought might be her's at dinner I deemed to be your DSiL.

Then i spot the top of the head.

I will stand 4 Judy's.

Wow that may be the longest trip ever from the MK to the Swan! (I know this is of no help now, but it may have actually been a slightly shorter walk for you to get out at the Swan and go to the Boardwalk from there, as opposed to the YC. Plus it would have gotten you off the slowest bus ever. I know I would have been practically leaping out at random stop signs at that point.) That's too bad you weren't able to spend a lot of time around the Boardwalk - I love that area! At least you did get to visit though...:goodvibes
