Most Expensive / Moist Exhausting Continued - Final thoughts and wrap-up

If you have HBO, The Ricky Gervais Show is hilarious -- it's essentially Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington sitting around a table, while Ricky and Stephen make fun of Karl. But it's animated. Hard to explain...but really very funny!

I did catch that show once, about a year ago when we had a month of free HBO. I didn't realize that Karl was on that show, I guess he hadn't made enough of an impression on me yet. But I do remember it being pretty funny. Ricky's slightly evil laugh is contagious.

Day 7 - Part 7

After we left the Temple of Heaven replica in China, the sky still looked pretty dark so we decided to make a beeline to the exit. However, I think we may have stopped in Club Cool for a quick, refreshing drink of Coca-Cola products*. It’s pretty hard to walk by there and not stop in for a freebie.

* There are no paid product endorsements in this trip report. But that’s not to say that there couldn’t be…..for the right price. This is just an example of the kind of attention-grabbing promotion your product could receive. ;)

We left the park and went out to the bus stop, where we were the only people waiting for quite some time. We saw an abandoned fan mister at the entrance to the bus queue, and debated on taking it, but I don’t know – there’s just something skeevy about taking pre-used, abandoned stuff. Within about 5 minutes, somebody else came along and we watched them walk off with it. James would have loved it though; I could just see him, perpetually misting himself for the rest of the trip. It reminds me of a time a couple of years ago when Judy had a PChef booth at a local festival. I took the kids to the festival to check it out and hang out at Judy’s booth for a little while. It was a really hot day, so James bought a fan mister from a vendor selling toys a couple of booths down from Judy’s, and found a seat behind all the booths on top of a rock wall. A lot of people were walkin past there since it was a good place to walk to avoid the main crowds looking at the booths. Within a few minutes he and Marlene were chanting to passersby, “Misting twenty-five cents, fanning for free!” He got several takers, which ended up paying for the mister. But even better, about a half-hour later, a group of teenaged girls walked by and each of them said, “Hi James!” He had apparently talked-them-up earlier when they’d walked past. He blushed when he saw that we'd seen what happened.

But I digress…have I told that story before? Am I getting that old that I’m retelling and retelling the same stories? Reminds me of a time when James bought a fan mister at a local festival…

Anyway, between waiting for a bus and the ride itself, it took us a little more than an hour to get back to Animal Kingdom Lodge. We got off the bus at Jambo House so I could look through the gift shop. I still had a few bucks on the gift card that Jordan had given me. (Actually, I did buy a pair of shorts, but I ended up returning them later (at the gift shop in Kidani, conveniently) because they didn’t fit.) Then Marlene and I walked back to Kidani. When we got to the building, I let Marlene lead the way to see if she could find her way around. When we got off the elevator she immediately turned the wrong way and started leading us in the direction of Jambo House (although the hallway comes to a dead-end -- you have to go outside to get to Jambo House). You’ve probably seen that Kidani has African proverbs written on the walls at various places around the resort. Well, this was the proverb we ran across.

IMG_3768.jpg

My picture may be hard to read, but it says “He who does not know the road, holds back the one who does”. We had a good laugh over that, considering that we had to get lost to find it. We turned and took a few steps in the correct direction, and then I ran back to take a picture. I know good trip report fodder when it happens.

We eventually found our way back to our suite. Judy was in the living room area watching TV, Lauren was sleeping in the master bedroom where it was nice and dark and quiet, and not surprisingly, James was down in Community Hall. We told Judy some of the things we’d done during our afternoon together and Marlene really lit up while telling Judy about our attempts to get someone to answer the phone in the UK and Morocco. After a little while she asked to borrow my phone. She found the UK phone booth in my contacts list and hit Send.

Someone answered.

She said “Hello. Is this England?”

They said, “Yeah….in Epcot.”

IMG_3770.jpg

Then I could tell that she didn’t know what else to say, so I told her to ask what the weather was like.

“What’s the weather like?”

<pause>

“It’s kind of rainy here too. I’m at Animal Kingdom Lodge!”

And that was about the extent of it. She hung up and cracked up laughing.

IMG_3771.jpg

Then we just relaxed in the suite for a little bit. Marlene went out on the balcony to look at the animals, and it gave Judy and me a chance to talk. I said, “I like this savanna-view room, but I’d be fine with a standard-view room like we had last year. I don’t necessarily need the animals right outside my window.” She said, “I don’t know how many times Marlene has said she loooves this.” :lovestruc

Uh oh. You know what that means – more DVC points may be required. We don’t have more points yet, and I don’t know if or when we will, but we came really close to purchasing an add-on last fall. I saw the perfect listing for an add-on for us: it was the same Use Year as our current contract, a nice round number of points, Animal Kingdom Lodge, and a decent price. We offered what they were asking, with the seller paying the dues and the closing costs. I just wanted to pay the price times the number of points. The sellers agreed and it passed Disney’s right of first refusal. About this point in the story you may be asking, “I thought you said you didn’t purchase an add-on?” That’s right, we hit a snag as we approached closing. Apparently the sellers were having some financial difficulties and a creditor wasn’t permitting the sale of any assets. The timeshare broker tried to explain to the creditor that this was liquidating the asset to help the creditor get paid, but they weren’t letting up. We signed an extension on the contract allowing another week for closing to take place, to see if they could get it worked out, but they couldn’t. The broker said she’d never seen anything like this situation before. We could have kept extending and waiting, but to be honest, in thinking about the additional annual dues we’d have to pay, we were feeling a little bit of buyer’s remorse over the purchase. So, we withdrew our offer and let it go. Now, with DVC changing some of their rules regarding contracts purchased on the resale market, I kind of wish we’d have been able to get it before the change takes place, but I'll just have to be content.

Back to our story...Marlene poked her head in from the balcony to let us know that they were putting some food out for the giraffes.

IMG_3773.jpg

When they put this giraffe chow out, they really come running.

I'm not sure if this guy had an itch, or what his problem was exactly.

IMG_3781.jpg

I took pictures for another stitched photo of the view from our balcony. This is actually 20 pictures, stitched together.

IMG_3782Stitch.jpg

Lauren emerged from her nap and was feeling quite a bit better. Marlene had to tell her about our afternoon and the call she’d made to the U.K. phone booth a short while earlier.

Judy’s sister and her son, who live in Florida and visited us last year, came to visit once again. I believe I referred to them as DSiL and DN in last year’s trip report, so I’ll stick with the same references this time around too. They arrived at 4:30 and we sent Marlene to retrieve James from Community Hall, where he was undoubtedly punishing some teenager or off-duty lifeguard at the foosball table. We caught up with each other and hung out on the balcony for a little while, and then I suggested that we go through the building and see what animals we could find on the Pemba savanna, since I was the only one who had explored over to that part of the resort. We walked over and of course I had to take a few pictures.

I think this was taken on the way.

IMG_3802.jpg

These next pictures are from the Pembe savanna. Sorry, but I don’t have the gumption to look up what these critters are.

IMG_3804.jpg

IMG_3805.jpg

It was nice to see an actual 4-legged okapi, not like that 6-legged one I had seen at Animal Kingdom the day before. ;)

IMG_3806.jpg

IMG_3809.jpg

We thought this was one ugly duckling.

IMG_3810.jpg

I think we need a caption contest for this next one. Maybe something that starts with “Psst. Don’t look now but,....”

IMG_3813.jpg

This was another strange looking bird.

IMG_3816.jpg

IMG_3820.jpg

Drat, I was really hoping to see some Red River Hogs. Oh well.

After our little indoor safari to the Pembe Savanna viewing areas, it was time to head back to the room and start getting ready for the evening.

Don't look now, but I saw that guy p**ing in the fountain in Morocco:eek:

I see you've met my "boys" at AKL. I love just sitting and watching those giraffes.:lovestruc They look like they'd be awkward, but they are so graceful when they walk! I love being there - I would just like more food choices.

I could see getting used to that view....

I love the mister story, I can totally see Evan doing that. I do agree, used misters might be a bit skeevy....

I didn't know about the aborted add on. Bummer, especially with the changes. It's funny, we've been SOOO close a couple of times and things have made us retreat and I do believe it's been for the best so far, if and when the time is right, you'll find the right contract. Or not.

That is wonderful that someone answered the phone! I love the pictures of her just cracking up afterwards. Even better in a beret. I need to get those numbers into our trip it plans for the May trip. If nothing else, we can call each other!

I really can't believe this - nobody claimed the zero Judys!! :cool1:

I loved the proverb story. I wonder wether it was placed there because it was a dead end? As a hint that this is not the way to get to Jambo (at least this is what I understood you were saying)...

I would say, don't worry too much about those changes on resale contracts. Once I looked up the points it would cost to stay at the places that no longer are included, it really does not make sense to use points for that anyway. So maybe you will find an even better deal on a resale contract at some point. I guess since you aren't going to use this year's points anyway, you will have plenty to use over the next few years.

Which reminds me, how is your trip planning going for your Grand Canyon trip?

I also never got around to say that I am sorry that Judy had to give up PChef. I am sure it was rather hard to leave something behind which she built up with a lot of hard work. But it sounds like teaching is something she really enjoys and I think it is such an important profession! I wish her all the best that her new career will continue to be fulfilling! :goodvibes

It's worth a shot. I tried that with my Alice in Wonderland tie-in on my TR. So far no takers.

But even better, about a half-hour later, a group of teenaged girls walked by and each of them said, “Hi James!” He had apparently talked-them-up earlier when they’d walked past. He blushed when he saw that we'd seen what happened.

I'm not sure if this guy had an itch, or what his problem was exactly.

"If my neck was just one foot longer."
IMG_3781.jpg

Lauren emerged from her nap and was feeling quite a bit better. Marlene had to tell her about our afternoon and the call she’d made to the U.K. phone booth a short while earlier.

That's good news. A little cool air and rest can make a big difference.

I think we need a caption contest for this next one. Maybe something that starts with “Psst. Don’t look now but,....”

Um honey? I know you like it when I do this but I'm stuck.
IMG_3813.jpg

Looking forward to your evening plans at I'm assuming The Wave.

Don't look now, but I saw that guy p**ing in the fountain in Morocco:eek:

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: Good one! It's one of those "why didn't I think of that?" moments. I guess it was late when I posted the chapter and my brain was fried. I debated on waiting to post it until today to see if I could come up with something, but that was the only thing holding back the chapter so I just thought I'd put it out there and let you folks come up with the caption. You didn't disappoint!

I see you've met my "boys" at AKL. I love just sitting and watching those giraffes.:lovestruc They look like they'd be awkward, but they are so graceful when they walk! I love being there - I would just like more food choices.

I know -- I remember remarking on how graceful they were. It's amazing just to watch them walk.

Lack of a real counter service option is the major complaint about Kidani, from what I've seen on the DVC boards. I agree, but it's not a real big issue for us since when we're at the resort we'd rather make use of the grocery items we purchased.

I could see getting used to that view....

I love the mister story, I can totally see Evan doing that. I do agree, used misters might be a bit skeevy....

I think our boys would get along....probably too well.

I didn't know about the aborted add on. Bummer, especially with the changes. It's funny, we've been SOOO close a couple of times and things have made us retreat and I do believe it's been for the best so far, if and when the time is right, you'll find the right contract. Or not.

This is the first I've mentioned the aborted add-on. I could have posted it on the thread where they track resale prices because they track them after accepted offers through ROFR, but I wanted to wait to put it in my TR. It didn't quite turn out the way I expected though!

I have no doubt it was for the best. There will be other opportunities.

That is wonderful that someone answered the phone! I love the pictures of her just cracking up afterwards. Even better in a beret. I need to get those numbers into our trip it plans for the May trip. If nothing else, we can call each other!

I'm glad my camera was handy so I could get those shots. It's funny how it little it takes to make a memorable moment sometimes.

I really can't believe this - nobody claimed the zero Judys!! :cool1:

I can't believe it either.....but you win another round!!! :cheer2:

Maybe you've stolen the momentum back from Molly?

I loved the proverb story. I wonder wether it was placed there because it was a dead end? As a hint that this is not the way to get to Jambo (at least this is what I understood you were saying)...

Yes, it was on a dead-end section of the hallway. I wonder too. I'd like to think that it was thought-out, but I'm not sure.

I agree that this particular change wouldn't affect us; I'd never use our points for a stay like that, which was a very expensive use of the points. But, I think this puts a stake in the ground to track resale contracts differently. If there are similar changes in the future, I think they will still use this date as the dividing line.

Which reminds me, how is your trip planning going for your Grand Canyon trip?

I don't think it will be happening. This year's vacation may be a day-trip to HersheyPark. Oh, I do have a Civil War battlefield tour that I won/bought in a United Way auction....so I need to schedule that sometime. That may be an overnighter.

:goodvibes

Thanks Magdalene. It was hard, but she's moving forward and has only had a couple of pangs of regret. She's really loving being a teacher.

It's worth a shot. I tried that with my Alice in Wonderland tie-in on my TR. So far no takers.

I thought I'd seen it somewhere, but couldn't remember. Exactly, it's worth a shot.

Man you have to keep an eye on that boy!

Absolutely.

Very appropriate for many of us Disers.

Maybe, but you seemed to know your way around Disneyland quite well.

A great prank opportunity wasted.

:rotfl2:

She should have asked them to go into the nearest gift shop and inquire.

That's good news. A little cool air and rest can make a big difference.

Yep, she was in dire need of some rest.

Looking forward to your evening plans at I'm assuming The Wave.

And here I thought the chapter title was as cleverly disguised as "You're in Morocco". ;)

Edited to add -- I just realized that your caption suggestions didn't come through. I guess because they were quotes within a quote. Those were pretty good, I liked that you also captioned the giraffe picture! :thumbsup2

Great photos of the savannah, Glen. Seeing these just makes me all the MORE EXCITED with our news yesterday and staying at the AKL in September. My husband may NEVER tear me away from the balcony.

But we do see your edit timestamp. ::yes::
darn timestamp
:headache:
But even better, about a half-hour later, a group of teenaged girls walked by and each of them said, “Hi James!” He had apparently talked-them-up earlier when they’d walked past. He blushed when he saw that we'd seen what happened.
i suppose you are gonna say he takes after you at that age.
:rolleyes1

(Actually, I did buy a pair of shorts, but I ended up returning them later (at the gift shop in Kidani, conveniently) because they didn’t fit.)
tell the real story, you took them back because they were not yellow. and we know how the woman love the yellow ones.

so many comments and most of them involve marv

It reminds me of a time a couple of years ago when Judy had a PChef booth at a local festival. I took the kids to the festival to check it out and hang out at Judy’s booth for a little while. Within a few minutes he and Marlene were chanting to passersby, “Misting twenty-five cents, fanning for free!” He got several takers, which ended up paying for the mister.
That is AWESOME. Go James!

She found the UK phone booth in my contacts list and hit Send.

Someone answered.

She said “Hello. Is this England?”

IMG_3813.jpg
Obviously, it's saying something dirty. So I probably shouldn't repeat it here.

It's too bad nobody answered the Epcot phones when you were actually there, but at least you had some fun with it.

I'm definitely going to try it next trip. Time to work on my Cockney accent.

I cannot stop laughing for all of the clever comments, but I truly think that the one that takes the prize is MAGICFOR2'S!! So so good!

You've reinforced my decision to keep my savannah view room!:thumbsup2 Apparently, Maureen echoes that sentiment!

Let's do the Wave!!

Darn, foiled again! Zero Judys.:sad1:

Glenn, this update is quite witty! Your TR has been so much fun to read, it's very entertaining!

Ok, used fan misters:eek:? Ewwwww! No way would I have touched that thing! Skeevy is the perfect word. Ewwwww! Someone walked off with it?? I think I just threw up in my mouth a little! But I love your story about James at the PChef misting himself and others for a small fee! What an entrepeneur! And apparently the teenage girls thought him clever too!

Looks like you may want to invest in a GPS for Marlene...:rolleyes1

Poor Lauren! So she was still feeling poorly? Wow, she's been sick in your TR for about a month or so now:laughing:! I hope she improves!

Oh my word, Marlene is too adorable! She reminds me of my middle DD (H)! Looks like she had a blast talking to fake English people in Epcot too. See, now that's an appropriate memory as opposed to your urinating in the Moroccan fountain.

Let's see, this giraffe is probably counting his spots...110, 111, 112...
IMG_3781.jpg

LOVE LOVE LOVE this pic! What a fabulous shot and I wouldn't have known it was stitched! You should seriously frame this sucker, it's a beaut!
IMG_3782Stitch.jpg

Oh boy, I bet I know what these guys are whispering about..."pssst, see that guy on the balcony? Ya, the sweaty one. I heard that he writes trip reports and uses his wife in some sort of strange Where's Waldo game. And then he drags her around to meet up with people from the disboards she's never met! These humans, they're so odd!"
IMG_3813.jpg

Loved this update!:thumbsup2

Just wanted to say hi  and that I've really been enjoying your TR! You have such fantastic photos, I think that's so cool you were able to see the animals so close from your room!

Glad you had some fun with the Epcot phone booths! My parents went to Disney recently, and I had the phone booth numbers at the ready. My mom texted me after she told my dad to stand in the phone booth ("smile for a picture!"), and he was completely shocked when the phone rang. And even more shocked when it was me ("HI DAD!!!!!!"). He just kept asking "how did you DO this???"

I love that she called the ws phone! I'll have to remember that for our next trip, my kids would get a kick out of that!

Finally you got someone to answer the phone.:rotfl2:

That is great.

Someday I will stay at AKL, someday!

I don’t know – there’s just something skeevy about taking pre-used, abandoned stuff.

OK, I guess, I"m in the singular minority here. What is so skeevy about a used mister?? Most people don't like suck on them- do they?? :confused3 Why not take it back to the room, wash it with soap and water and enjoy it? After all, used mugs are all the rage. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

He blushed when he saw that we'd seen what happened.

Only when they've been caught.

But I digress…have I told that story before? Am I getting that old that I’m retelling and retelling the same stories?

If you're old enough to tell them twice, you're old enough to not remember what we all tell you too.

I still had a few bucks on the gift card that Jordan had given me.

I don't remember this! Can you tell the story again??

(Actually, I did buy a pair of shorts, but I ended up returning them later

Feeling the Disney Dining Binge, huh?

Well, this was the proverb we ran across.
