We are going to WDW in October, this will be our third visit and our second time staying at POR.Regardless of other peoples thoughts on this resort we loved it. Does anyone know of a spray, liquid,or anything that repels mossies ? My wife is always targeted by these and suffers horrendous bites. My son and I very rarely get bitten,is it something that certain people give off that attracts them ? Anyway we would be very grateful of any suggestions for something that works to make our holiday more enjoyable.

if memory serves, they sell mosquito repellent at resort stores (the common brand is "off", but all brands work).....
i know i just saw it in july at the GF so i'm sure they must also have it in the store at POR....
any brand they sell there is good......
personally, i prefer to use the roll-on stuff......
it might be more expensive to buy it in the resort store, but i'd much rather buy it in the states than drag it along with me on the plane....

i have to say however, that i've never found the need to use mosquito repellent in WDW....even when we used to stay at POR in the alligator bayou section....

Hi Keith

Just wanted to say Welcome to the DIS :)

We have never stayed at POR - but it looks such a pretty resort, definately going for a look around on our next trip!

Do you usually go to WDW in October? It is a lovely time to go, lots of things happening.

We have Trip Planning Chat every Sunday at 7pm, you will need to register again click here we can chat about everything Disney - we would love for you to join us :)

Don't forget to join us here on the Community Board for general chit chat too ;) There is a Getting to know you thread on the Community Board....please join in and introduce yourself. You will find out loads about us :)

In the Florida supermarkets and chemists you will often find an impliment that helps deal with the itchiness and swelling after the bites. I can't remember the name, but it looks like ( and I think is named after) a pen. I find this is really good, and it's something you can carry around with you easily all day. The most effective thing I find to do with a bite it to apply an ice pack (or ice cube) to the area, again this helps with the swelling and itchiness. Obviously it's not always possible, when in doors, to apply ice to a bite without that making a little bit of a mess on the floor

You can get sprays and repellant in the local supermarkets, although in my experience none of them are particularly effective.

I do think it's a combination of things that seem to make some people notice the bites more. Certainly some people seem to have a much more obvious reaction to the bites and maybe this makes them a lot more aware of when the mossies are around. I do notice however that there definately seem to be "target" people the mossies like much more than others (me included), so I would guess we give off some sort of pheramone or aroma they seem to prefer.

We have been in October before and never needed to use a repellant. There were very few mosquitos. Last year, in August, we bought a spray repellant in Walmart which contained DEET which was excellant. There were lots of different types, but the ones containing Deet are the best. You do have to wash it off afterwards though. Maybe not recommended for young children. We only needed to use it in the evenings around water.

It is Sunday night and I can't go anywhere because of the situation in Orlando, so I thought I'd lurk over here awhile. I am one of those people that mosquitos love. I've found that rubbing a Bounce dryer sheet on my arms and legs keeps them away. I have no idea why, but it seems to work. I really don't like the products with DEET, so this seems like a good alternative. The pen that vernon refured to is the Benedryl Itch Relief Stick. They work wonders.

Someone on another thread said that Woodland fresh by Avon is very good for keeping them at bay. Anyone had any success at using it?

Thanks for the reply regarding the Avon product.A work colleague of mine had reccommended this but couldn't remember the name.Might be worth giving it a go. I'm sure my wife will take everyone else's advice as well so I bet we have plenty of products to use on our trip ! Still no-one seems to know why the mossies attack certain people and leave others alone?

Mossies usually eat me alive, I really suffered when we lived in Cyprus. Every where I go I get biten without fail.

I went to Orlando armed with bottles and bottles of mossie repellent and after-bite stuff too and never needed it. I didn't get biten once!:bounce:

hello keith

kaylee i didnt know about the planning chat. if i can i will pop along this sunday.

love

lucy

We've used the Avon stuff. My DD thinks it works a bit, but only if you smother yourself in it! To be honest, I'm not supprised that it keeps them away - IMHO it smells horrible!
A proper mosquito repellant works better!

Thanks again for the reples. Now another plea...We have just booked a 4 nite cruise on Wonder for our visit in October. This will be our first Disney cruise. Our cabin is on 7 deck aft, starboard side.Any tips of any kind regarding excursions, dress code, dining etc etc. will be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks again,

Keith ( Newcastle UK )

We have been on the Magic, men do not have to wear jacket & ties, smart trousers & sports shirts were worn. On the magic you went to a different dining area each evening (the same servers went with you). You will love it, it is not like being on a ship - so calm.:earsboy: :earsgirl:

Is it just you and dw, Keith? We are taking our first cruise on the Wonder in December. There are loads of websites with info, including the DIS Cruise Forum. We've bought the DCL Passporter which has all the info you could possibly need.
