Mosquitos in January?

Is there anyone who knows if the mosquitos come out in January? Getting ready to pack and wondering if I should bring the bug spray!

We always go in May or June and I have never ever seen any mosquitos. Disney really maintains their grounds well and I think they have taken measures to be sure that the only living things other than people that you see are deer, rabbits and lizards. Unless of course you are in the Animal Kingdom. jk

There seem to be mosquitos all year round here. I've been bit a few times at Disney although they seem to control them fairly well, it wouldn't hurt to have the big spray handy.

I was there in January and don't remember seeing any mosquitos. I've also gone in October and December and didn't see any then either.

I'm a mosquito magnet, and I never have a problem with bites in WDW. I think they treat the land for those kinds of bugs.

My 8 year old son insisted he got a mosquito bite last week, but I didnt' see one and figured it was probably something else that got him. I like the sunscreen with the bug spray included. It doesn't smell that bad and is easy to use.

You won't have any problem with them at Disney in the summer or the winter. I've never seen them in January or July!!!

Good idea, $35 for "Off" spray is a bargain.

(Just kidding, but it does cost a quite a bit more than at home.)

We were there last week and while we normally don't get bitten at Disney, I got 2 big mosquito bites while on the Safari at AK. I was surprised. There wasn't anything anywhere else.

You think bug spray would cost more at a grocery store in Orlando than here in California $35.00 is what we would pay here at home..lol

The key to staying away from mosquitoes is staying away from water. I'm not talking pools or fountains or even water rides, I'm talking stagnant non moving water. Maybe you'll get bit when riding something like the ferry across to MK, or even maybe in AK with all the water around, but this time of year is usually their incubation time. They dont start coming out in full force until late spring, all the way to early fall. The hottest times of the year. Disney does a number of things, as does most theme parks, to control that problem such as install repelling devices, water treatment, and they even have biological control, such as certain plants that repel the pests, and fish in the water that eat the larvae. I do that stuff, and aquatic plant control for a living, and disney is one example that they give us in both occasions, they have developed a number of ways to keep the public away from mosquito bites.

Bring the spray! I live here. I work here. I am an all-year-long Floridian resident (even though I'm originally from NY). Bugs never go away in FL, even at WDW. They have been known to vacation there, too.

They sell the bug repellant wipes in individually wrapped packages- I keep a box of them in my luggage (have them where ever I travel) and can pop one in my pocket and use it if I need it. (just keep an eye on the expiration date)

we haven't ever had a problem, even when we stayed at fort wilderness ( in Dec and Jan) but one yr they canceled all evening out door stuff due to an encephalitis outbreak so they must have them they just never bother us! i always assumed they sprayed or something since we really never see them. however, how much room can off take just to be safe? or maybe some skin so soft, i think they have towelets which could do double duty

Encephilitis testing is done by testing chickens, at least in my county it is. If the chickens come up positive, then there is encephilitis in the county. There are millions of mosquitoes, if a chicken comes up with it, then how many actually have it? These things feed off blood, and transmit by blood. So if one chicken has it, there could be as many as 700,000 carrying the disease. That is probably why it was called off, better to be safe than sorry. As for the wipes, they dont work. They sweat off way too easy. Deep Woods Off is about the best spray you can get. Bring it. Another thing that is available, which we use in the field is something called Thermacell. It has a little strap, or belt clip, it uses small repellant mats that are heated by butane tanks all in a small camera size contraption. They retail for around $30, and can be attached to a belt or to a stroller. They are quiet and odor free. If you are that concerned about it, use something like that. It provides protection for about 20 feet. And it also depends on your skin make-up as well, I never get bothered by them. Others, especially folks from up north, for some reason, get tore up on a regular basis.

Its only considered PROPER to eat mosquitoes in months with a B in them.

(Of course, if you have a bee in you, you may not care about the mosquitoes.)
