Mosquitoes!

We arrive in two days and I just thought of this. How are the mosquitoes this time of year? Are they bad enough that I need to take a repellant? Here in Indiana they weren't that bad and I managed to get through the summer without any bites. But with the rain and humidity in Orlando this time of year will I be eaten alive? :) Any suggestions of what products work best? Thanks friends!

I always take Off and spray it every morning before heading out and then in the evening after a nice break. They have a scent that smells pretty good, very light.

Have a great trip.

WDW exists in a little bubble of non-reality where few mosquitoes fear to tread.

Disney does a good job of taking their huge piece of swampland in Central Florida and spraying it to the point where no biting bug survives. I'm a Florida native, and it is the only place in the state where I could be outside around sunset on a muggy day and not be eaten alive.

Don't worry about the mosquitos. :)

I've been to WDW 11 or 12 times (lost count) and I've never been bit by a mosquito there. No repellent, nothing. It's weird, there's just no mosquitos.

Maybe in Ft. Wilderness, though??? Never been there.

We got here yesterday and ran around all last night without a bite! I was amazed! I don't think you need to worry about mosquitos. But don't forget the sunscreen - Disney hasn't yet figured out a way to protect us from the sun!

Just returned - no mosquitos at WDW.
I saw a show on HGTV once about how Disney raises certain insects that eat other undesirable bugs' larva and eggs, like flies and mosquitos. Can't remember but maybe it was the lovebugs that were everywhere! :) I'd definitely rather have those than flies or mosquitos though.
BTW, you were lucky - here in Southern IN we were swarmed by mosquitos this summer.

I agree. In all my trips to WDW I have never really seen any nasty bugs, mosquitos, flies, etc. Hmmmmmm :scratchin I like their system, whatever it is. :thumbsup2

Adult love bugs don't even have the capability to eat. In their larval stage, they help in the decomposition of grass.

Dragonflies, however...there's a reason some folks call 'em mosquito hawks.

Try Avon Expedition spray with spf15. This repells everything for 8 hours (even those no-see-um bugs) and is safe for kids, if you have kids. You don't have to worry about getting it on your hands and then eating and poisoning yourself, lol! No DEET. :teeth:

I was there last week and bf and I both got a few bites the first day so we used our off spray every morning.

I've never had a problem with mosquitos at WDW. The "Off" might become useful if you're going to spend any time around water or swimming pools at dusk or dawn, when sometimes the "no-see-ums" come out to play.

I have to say that I am a person who seems to get bit by a mosquito NO MATTER WHERE I AM OR GO AT NIGHT (in season of course). For Disney at night, anywhere around water like EPCOT, the Boardwalk, etc....I have gotten bitten many times when not remembering to wear repellant. So, if you tend to attract bites like me (my husband gets none--go figure) I do wear a round of OFF at night especially at EPCOT and I spend most nights there. However, be carefull about something. I found out that if I spray my legs lets say, DO NOT let a Disney plastic bag get near your body where you sprayed or you will be wearing the ink from that bag on your legs and clothes. I did this one year and ruined the shorts and top I was wearing and it would not wash out either. There is something in the OFF product and other bug sprays that just strips the paint of those bags. So now, my husband knows that if I buy anything at night he holds the bags not me.

We've used Avon's Buguard but most recently I found the Bull Frog Mosquito Coast spray is very effective. It also doubles as sunscreen. Both are "Deet Free" products and neither is sticky or smelly.

For the record-I posted this on another thread but when we stayed at the WL in Aug 2005 we had taken the boat back from MK at night and it was FULL of mosquitos, really bad and the next morning the CR's restroom area off the docks were also full of them. A CM was actually hosing them off the walls. While we managed to get through them without one bite (we did have the Buguard on ;) , so I'm sure that helped) I wouldn't outrule the non-existence of them at WDW. They were definitely there, (but maybe WDW uses some of that "Disney Magic" to "de-bite" them-- :rotfl: -now wouldn't that be nice!!)

Regardless we use our spray in the mornings and at nights during the humid times of the year. :thumbsup2

I asked about this five years ago after we noticed the complete lack of biting bugs in the park and around the All Star Movies resort. They crop-dust spray in the wee hours very, very often, as well as taking proactive measures like predatory/beneficial insects etc. My son is a mosquito-attractor like you wouldn't believe and he's never once been bitten at WDW. To be fair, we use a sunscreen that is also a repellant (Off makes a good one), but I think it's Disney pixie dust protecting him :wizard:

Actually, mosquitos are attracted by ferimones. Some people give of a certain type that attract them, some people don't. The other evening my wife and I sat down on the patio for about 20 minutes before going into the house and I didn't get a single mosquito bite, my wife counted hers the next morning and she had 34 on one leg and 27 on the other. She had 17 on one arm and I forgot how many on the other. Yes, we live on a lake, but we also have bat boxes in the trees between our house and the water.

No worries. I'm one of the mentioned people-who-mosquitos-adore (and they turn into huge welts on me, GRRRR), and didn't get a single bite of any sort at WDW.

In my many trips to WDW I have never seen a mosquito. And I also have never used any kind of bug repellent while at WDW. I don't even pack any such item when I get ready to go down there.

I live in a subdivision here in Tallahassee, and we have several large lakes in the area (one just across the street from my home), and we don't have many mosquitoes around here either. Perhaps that is because we have plenty of dragonflies in the area.

Really never gave it much thought.

But in any case, I would not worry about any kind of bugs at Walt Disney World, except for the ones in the 3-D show at the Animal Kingdom. (Some of them can get pretty upset with us muggles.)

Enjoy.
