Mortgage question

My mortgage has a grace period which ends on the 16th (the 16th it is considered late) I mailed my check the 1st of the month and it still has not gotten there. I am thinking about making another payment online but I don't want 2 payments going towards August. I called the mortgage company and they said even if they got both tomorrow 1 would go towards August and the other towards Sept. I am still worried though. If they both go towards August I would be up a creek. I thought I would wait until tomorrow to see if it shows up.
I just talked to my mom and she suggested stopping payment on the first check not really what I want to do but..............

What do you guys think?

Oh yeah next month I will not wait until the 1st to mail it for sure!

I would probably stop payment on the check you sent and make a payment online. I would also call them to let them know what youa re doing and why.

Fortuntely you aren't considered late with the credit buereaus until you hit 30 days, so even though it might cost you a late fee, IMHO that's far better than a mortgage late, which is absolutley the worst late you can have on a credit report.

Send the 2nd payment. You have to dictate how your money is allocated anyway. If they somehow make a mistake all you have to do is call them up and have them correct it.

I'm confused. You mailed a check but it hasn't gotten there yet but you can make an online payment. Why not make online payments in the future?

How long do your checks normally take to get there? Even if it was by Pony Express, it should have been there by now. I would assume it's lost at this point and make the online payment. Ask the mortgage company to NOT process your check and return it to you if you want to avoid double payments.

That is what I'll do after having this issue but it has never been a problem before.
The check goes to California I am in Illinois. It sometimes takes a couple days sometimes a week or more.

Did you check with the bank to see whether or not the check cleared? It wouldn't be the first time a mortgage company has received a check and posted it to the wrong account which would account for your account showing it wasn't paid - before you go through all the trouble of stopping payment and sending online payment, check this first. Good luck

it has not shown up on my online banking that is what got me worried to begin with

If your bank account can handle another payment right now do the on line thing and then call if your payment due date does not advance and reflect two payments.

I had an extra payment mispost before and all I had to do was call and they changed the allocation and all was the way I intended it.

I'd be careful about stopping payment on the first check. My mortgage company has a pretty hefty returned check fee.

CHeck with them again - having it not show up online in your account doesn't mean that they didn't post it to someone else's account, all it takes in a slip of the finger typing in a number. Check if the check cleared your checking account, too. :confused3
