Are there any plus sized women (and men) out there that get massages while at Disney? I am a size 18/20W and am wondering how the poeple at the spas will react. When I think of spas, I think of fit/tan/athletic people. All of which I am not :-) Will the robes fit me? Does the staff make you feel at ease? I want to take the "massage plunge" but I don't want to feel uncomfortable.

Thanks...

I am also a 18-20W and have gotten a message at the GF Spa. Everything was fine. There was no feeling that I was out of place, they had robes to fit, not everyone was tan, fit and athletic!

Go and get your message! You deserve it!

I've seen a lot of plus sized woman at the GF Spa. I saw two last year that would have killed to have been a size 18/20! They were both there for a full day of beauty!

I can't say that I've ever seen a buff, tan woman there. Mostly it's just normal poeple in all shapes, sizes and skin colors.

Go, enjoy. They do have larger robes if you need one, and there are also private changing areas if that will make you more comfortable. :)

Wheew, ducklite, thank GOODNESS I wasn't there last year or you would have been talking about me. :jester: I'd give my leg to be an 18 again...wait, MY LEG IS about an 18!

Seriously, I don't think anybody cares what size you are, all they care about is the color of your money, honey. Go indulge yourself.

My DH and I are both large people and we have both had a massage at the Grand Floridian. No problems. We have done the "spa thing" the last 3 trips and everyone there is great.

Hey there Beansmom

You sound just like me. My leg is larger than yours but getting smaller, just finished losing 66 pounds and am working on the 84 more to go! LOL

You are so right that the only requirment at Disney is about six inches long and green.

I might check out a spa treatment on my next trip. Hope they don't decide to charge me double like the airlines want to though! (smile)

My experience was somewhat different than the others that have posted so far. I called in advance of my trip to discuss this issue as my mom and I are both plus size and frankly at the upper end of plus size (3X). The folks I spoke with on the phone assured me that the robes, etc. would be roomy and comfortable for us. I said that we would be willing to bring our own robes. Not necessary I was assured. Well, we should have brought our own robes. While theirs were soft and fluffy they were in no way large enough to close. I was in my late 30's at the time and my mom was in her early 60's. I made the best of it and wore my very long t-shirt. My mom on the other hand was very very embarassed and did not continue with her spa treatments. I spoke with the spa manager who apologized but I must say it was very very upsetting for us both. I had read an article by Star Jones from the View about her experiences at the GF spa. She raved about it, which was why I suggested it as a fun girls day thing for my mom and me.

dont worry be happy, i just did spa at dcl, and unbenounced to me when i turned over i flashed everyone in the spa, butt naked i was, my daughter told me what i had done, but the two mausseses acted like it happens everyday, not a problem, i was not made to feel like anything had been wrong, and if my daughter didnt tell me i dont think i would have even knowem.

I am so sorry about your bad spa day :-( Your poor mom! This is my greatest fear...the robe not closing. I am sure that there are plenty of 18W/20W that visit the spas, but I am a very short 18/20, which I think makes me appear much larger (my butt is my worst enemy--lol!)

I just wish more industries would "get it". There are a ton (no pun intended) of large ladies out there. Why not cater to them? Wht would it hurt to stock up on some true 3X robes?

As a side note, I have noticed (and bought--yes that is my wallet saying OUCH) that Tommy Hillfiger has started a line of plus sized clothing. These clothes are cut very true to size. The section in Macy's where these clothes are located is SWAMPED. You can't even move. I don't know why other labels do not follow their lead. I also enjoy the Elizabeth line of plus sized clothing, b/c they have petite sizing. Just rambling.......

That's very odd. When I saw the plus sized gals I wrote about earlier in this thread, they had been given larger robes by the spa which were enough to cover them. They weren't as plush as the regular robes, but they most definitely were ample to cover. I have a friend who weighs 320, so it gives me a benchmark to compare, and I would say that these two women weighed between 300 and 350.

I'm wondering when this happened to you, and if they've gotten in the larger robes since then, or possibly done away with them (which would be a very STUPID thing to do). I'm almost positive that I met these two women in late August of 2001.
