I do the same thing every time we go. We have AP's and now that my daughter is almost 4, we feel the need to go a little more than we used to. Before, I would always spring for on site, usually the DLH. Well once you get used to that, it's hard to go back, but now splurging makes it harder to plan a next trip 4-6 months down the road to return. We went last month for dapper day for 4 days, 3 nights. I got an amazing deal at the Red Lion for $50/night, $242 after taxes. Then I checked out Desert Inn and Suites because we stayed there in November and I loved the proximity, this time is was $438 for 3 nights. And then there were dapper day rates at DLH, it would have been $700 for 3 nights. I kept trying to tell myself to stick with the Red Lion, so I stalled. I tried at the last minute to book the DLH with dapper day rates, but they were sold out, so ultimately we ended up sticking with the Desert Inn. I was a little bummed I didn't get the DLH, but I also decided that there were a bunch of activities to do with that difference. We decided to do the BB Fantasmic dining and it was amazing, I just think of that experience when I think I missed out on something.
Now for Fall dapper day, I think we might try the GCH again. It's a fantastic hotel, but I will only stay there with 50% off rates. It's only about $873 (after taxes) for 3 nights with dd rates.
After all that rambling, I guess just go with your gut and budget. If it were me and my husband worked that much, I would want our time together to be extra special, but that doesn't always mean a fancy hotel will be that extra element. You have to think of what you could do with that $700 difference.
