I love September. Forget January and it’s New Year status - for me, September's the month full of promise. It’s all clean slates and sparkly new beginnings, smart school uniforms and shiny shoes. The return of routine. And after the months of summer, when Taylor Towers is bursting with testosterone and teen spirit, parental peace reigns once more...

September is the month that features our wedding anniversary and, as the years accelerate at a blistering pace, we are more inclined than ever to celebrate the milestones as we dash past! 25, 26, 27 years of marital mayhem and counting!!!

Finally, I should also mention that September is one of the less manic months for my man of business in his suit and tie. The lull of August is lifting but there’s still the opportunity for him to take time out and party - unlike our jinxed January trips that we’ve been forced to cancel in the past due to worrisome work-related woes. It’s a less than busy month for this most mature of students, too. Lectures don’t resume in earnest until the first week of October so I’m free to flit around till then...

So there it is, September is a veritable super-month for us - I just can’t think why we didn’t work it out sooner! Fortunately, we managed to put two and two together by October of last year, when we were forced (again) to reconsider the existing plans we had in place for a trip together. Some hard drinking - er.. I mean, thinking(!!!), ensured we were able to transfer our Disney cruise plans to the final Tortola offering of the summer and we worked from there. Playing with the dates on the Virgin Atlantic website proved fruitful and we made significant savings by deciding to fly out to Orlando three days prior to leaving Port Canaveral on the Magic - I opted to stay on post-cruise and spend a week with our daughter, Sophie. Richard, unfortunately, couldn’t hide from the office forever so had to fly back on the afternoon we docked...

With flights in place, we booked our pre-cruise/post-cruise accommodation using DVC points, of course! A complex arrangement of 1 night at Saratoga Springs and 2 nights at Wildness Lodge were duly altered at the 7 month window - Bay Lake Tower for three nights became our home away from home...

The year flew by. I made several online ADRs. I cancelled several online ADRs and made different ones. I panicked about the volume of our Fish Extender exchange gifts and bought new suitcases. Richard panicked about changing seats when he renewed his Aston Villa season ticket. It’s the differences that make us compatible - no, really...

Before long, the date of departure was upon us and so, after this long and winding preamble, let the trip report commence!!!

Part One: PRE-CRUISE VIEWS...

Wednesday September 9th 2009.
An early start wasn’t necessary today. We were on the later VA flight and, as the Virgin Clubhouse was out of action, we didn’t feel quite the same compulsion to hurtle down the M23, lips already pursed in anticipation of sipping a Virgin Redhead! We still managed to arrive in good time and swiftly parked in the South Terminal Short Stay car park as, many months before, I had prepaid for 11 days parking and received a most excellent deal in return... We had already checked in online the day before so, before long, were passing through the amusing misnoma that is the ‘Fast Track’ security check. I know speed is relative, but surely the word ‘fast’ implies a pace that is slightly quicker than a sedated tortoise? A sedated tortoise on roller skates would be an improvement - but maybe that’s just me..?

Once airside, we walked towards Books Etc. Except it wasn’t there anymore and appeared to have vanished altogether. I was more than a little saddened by such a turn of events, as a visit to this literature emporium is something of a personal pre-trip tradition. It’s a simple pleasure but I really look forward to buying one of those huge ‘airport only’ paperback editions of a fab fresh-off-the-presses crime novel. After sulking a little, I browsed the outsize offerings in WHSmith but it didn’t feel the same so, without further ado, we decided to check out the V-Room...

I had thought this might be packed but was pleasantly surprised by the plethora of available comfy chairs and the complimentary champagne slipped down very nicely thank you, as we whiled away the time until we could board... Eventually the flight was called and we headed to the gate where there was the usual confusion with some very tense people getting even more stressed but hey, we were on holiday so just chilled until the line diminished and we could saunter on without too much fuss...

Our seats for this trip were 7A/K and before long we were sipping more champagne, nibbling chips and pulling faces at each other across the aisle. Well, I was. Richard had more important things to attend to like deciding whether to wear headphones and sunglasses...

DSCF1676.jpg

Or just sunglasses...

DSCF1678.jpg

Or neither...

DSCF1681.jpg

I decided to take the usual onboard ‘pedi pic’...

DSCF1680.jpg

...but with a twist as I artistically included the amenities pack - it’s the juxtaposition of pristine upper class toothbrush and dirty lower class Birkenstocks... ;)

Actually, the pedicure deserves an honorable mention. The night before our hols, I had been lamenting the fact that I wouldn’t be able to get one in the airport as usual. So Richard offered to do it for me and, as pedis go, this one was fab - staying put for the entire trip and beyond!!! Round of applause for the man in the suit and tie, methinks...

The flight flew by. (See what I did there???!!!) We landed ahead of time and were swiftly through immigration and baggage claim, before making our way to the Magical Express!!! I guess it’s time to confess that I have mixed feelings about this service. I love the concept of it and, for the first few times we used it, there were no problems. However, our last two experiences have been most definitely painful! They go a little something like this - sitting on the coach and waiting and waiting and waiting... Waiting and waiting... Then waiting some more before finally setting off - only to be the last on a lengthy list of drop offs. This time was the worst as not only were we last BUT we were also in the company of about a gazillion people who it seemed would be checking into the Contemporary for a conference!!! Fortunately, the synapses in my brain were still sporadically sparking, and I worked out that if we wanted to check in before another yet hour rolled by, Richard should wait for the luggage whilst I steamed to the lobby. Which is exactly what I did and, of course, it worked out fine but I think I will pre-book a town car for our next trip...

But enough of the griping! We worked out where to find our room...

DSCF1773.jpg

...and excitedly made our way to the Bay Lake Tower and room 8008...

This was our first time in a studio and we were pleasantly surprised by the all the space!

We quickly settled in and went to briefly explore the rest of the resort...

We were supposed to be dining at the Wave this evening and had a late 9.20pm reservation. By 8pm however, I was seriously flagging and desperate to climb into my PJs, so we cancelled and ordered that 1st night staple, the room service burger!!! Yummy!!! Post-dinner, I couldn’t resist climbing into the comfy bed and shutting my eyes - just for a moment, you understand... Suffice to say, I didn’t convincingly open them again until the following morning!!! Goodnight...

what a brilliant start Karen, I have just got in from work and been thoroughly entertained, I cant wait to read more :thumbsup2

Great start Kaz. We used ME for the first time and sat on the bus for over 30 mins waiting. :faint:

The room at BLT looks great. :thumbsup2

We awoke at around 6am, feeling very refreshed and more than ready to face our first proper Floriday! Richard rummaged through our Owners Locker, which had been delivered to the room the previous evening, and triumphantly held two refillable mugs aloft! Coffee was calling, loudly - so off he went to fill ‘em up... I pottered around, deciding what to wear for the day and awaited his return. He wasn’t long and I had plenty of time to enjoy my coffee on the balcony before having a shower. The studio was a lake view room and I honestly think it’s one of the best vistas we’ve ever had...

...even if the weather wasn't up to much!

Before long, we’d gotten gorgeous and were ready to go, so headed out to the bus stop area, intending to go to Animal Kingdom. I had a hankering to see some hanimals and, because it was still fairly early and not too warm, I figured this would be a great opportunity. So that’s exactly what we did!!! The journey was speedy and before long we were inside the park where the first stop was Guest Relations so we could pick up a couple of Anniversary badges... Technically, our wedding anniversary (27th = sculpture! Who knew?) wasn’t due for another 13 days but, by that time, my long suffering spouse would be back at work. So badge-wise, it was now or never!!!

Anyway, here we are sporting our badges - you can just about see Richard's on his manbag strap...

So first up, we went to Asia and sauntered through the Maharajah Jungle Trek, snapping away with abandon...

We were thoroughly enjoying this alternative Animal Kingdom experience but were feeling a little peckish... As luck would have it, we were passing Yak & Yeti just as they were opening their doors for lunch so we enquired about a table and were seated straight away... Within minutes we were savouring our first cocktails of the trip - Yak Attack for me and a Big Bamboo (I think) for him...

DSCF1769.jpg

The food was really yummy - especially the Lettuce Cups starter which we shared...

DSCF1770.jpg

We followed this with Crispy Honey Chicken (me) and Stir Fried Beef and Broccoli (him). In future, I think I’d order for Lettuce Cups as a main course and opt for one of the delicious looking desserts which we just didn’t have room for this time around - those sweet Fried Wontons looked amazing!!!

With lunch over, we decided to return to the resort as Richard kept mumbling something about “Conference call at 1.30pm... Blah, blah, blah... Check my emails... Blah, blah, blah...” Naturally I gave him my best look of purest wifely outrage, but, between you and me, I was pretty full after lunch and content to relax with a book so boarded the return bus quite happily...

The rest of the day passed without incident. Richard took his iPhone for a walk as he talked his way around the resort and was gone for quite a while. Fortunately, he returned with a bottle of chilled Iron Horse Fairytale Cuvee PLUS 2 gorgeous champagne glasses which insisted we “Celebrate Today!” And who am I to argue with such wisdom..?!?

DSCF2035.jpg

The itinerary said EPCOT & a Bistro de Paris ADR were on the agenda but, in reality, neither of those happened as we were still really full from lunch and, before long, extremely chilled from the lovely champagne. So we cancelled dinner, watched some TV and eventually shared a salad and an open sandwich from the Contempo Cafe before getting another early night - zzzz...

Great start Karen. BLT looks fab :thumbsup2 I look forward to reading some more ::yes::

I love those Yak Attacks too - Mmmm

Karen, you write an entertaining report. I'll be reading along with the rest of your fans.

This iconic day dawned with extensive TV coverage of the 9/11 anniversary. Richard rushed off to satisfy our need to caffeine and we sipped our coffee watching the drama of eight years ago unfold in real time. As the last working day before the cruise, Richard had plenty of calls to make/emails to reply to, so I decided to get ready and make my way to the Magic Kingdom. Richard promised to join me by midday so I made my way to the park in a brand new Mickey t-shirt, keen to step onto Main Street, USA and absorb the atmosphere... Unfortunately, in my haste, I ran a little too enthusiastically to the lift area on our floor and promptly fell over on the freshly mopped floor!!! OUCH!!! I seemed to fall in slow motion and all I could do was stretch my hands out in front as a protective reflex - I really think I need to learn how to tumble. Anyway, I ended up hurting the palms of my hands, jarring my right elbow and bashing both knees!!! Thank goodness I don't wear shorts because that bruising was ugglee - in fact, I still have a faint yellow tinge on my left knee. Thankfully, I didn't do any further damage to the troublesome big toe on my right foot so no weird limping occured...

A cast member helped me up which wasn't embarrassing at all!!! By this time I just wanted to disappear in the lift so headed down to the ground floor level and hobbled over to park as quickly as I my Birkies could carry me.

Once inside, I quickly forgot about my injuries and had a fab time - there’s definitely something to be said for just pleasing yourself. I worked my way along Main Street, browsing the stores and people watching. I also busted some amazing moves with the Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! parade...

Photo0103-1.jpg

Photo0104-1.jpg

...in fact, my choreography was so cool, I’m rather surprised I didn’t get a call from Disney... Ah well, at least that meant I had time for some extreme browsing in Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe!!! I love this enlarged emporium - it’s got a really Christmassy atmosphere, the smell is just gorgeous - don’t tell anyone, but I actually prefer it to the one in DTD!!! Before too long, Richard joined me and we went straight to the Hall of Presidents as this felt like an appropriate attraction for September 11th. I don’t remember ever doing this before so I have no idea what it was like prior to the recent update, but I quite enjoyed it. The animatronics are pretty impressive and I enjoyed looking at all the artefacts in the waiting area prior to show... All that patriotism made us hungry, so we opted for Colombia Harbor House for a tuna sandwich (him) and a bowl of chowder (me). I didn’t want to make the mistake of filling my face and not being able to deal with dinner as tonight we had a reservation at California Grill and nothing was going to get between me and that experience!!!

Lunch over, we skipped into Fantasyland and agreed it really is A Small World before heading over to Philharmagic - one of our most fave attractions of all!!! As ever, it didn’t disappoint. The Haunted Mansion was a walk-on so we did and then it was round to Pirates and Big Thunder Mountain - everywhere was really empty... We crossed back across the park to Tomorrowland to do battle on Buzz Lightyear - I don’t know why, I always lose...

Before we go any further, I feel I must apologise for the appalling lack of photos in today’s synopsis. This trip was a photographic nightmare as not only did I forget to pack the charger for my little Fuji ‘point and shoot’ but something went wrong with the battery charger for my bigger Fuji and it just didn’t want to retain any power at all - very frustrating!!! So today’s offering are courtesy of my Samsung phone - very amateur, I know...

But enough of the excuses!!! Time was ticking by and I suddenly remembered we were supposed to be meeting Claire (Pinky166) and her husband The Mad Hatter - er, I mean Lee. I hadn’t actually confirmed this with her but had sent a text message earlier that day and decided to wait for a while in the Outer Rim with Richard to see if they could make it. Now hindsight is a wonderful thing and I really don’t know why I hadn’t bothered to log onto the DIS at this point (especially as the internet is free and we had the Netbook with us) BUT I hadn’t. Which was a pity because if I HAD, I would have discovered a personal message from Claire explaining that she’d left her phone at home but giving me Lee’s number instead... But I didn’t discover this until much later so, at 3pm, Richard and I were esconced in the Outer Rim’s comfy armchairs and watching out for a couple, any couple, who could possibly be the aforementioned Claire and Lee. Unfortunately, at that time of day, the Outer Rim was something of a ghost bar...

Photo0114.jpg

...and bar staff there were none!!! We waited awhile before deciding that Claire and Lee had undoubtedly sailed past on a monorail...

Photo0125.jpg

...and stayed on as they didn’t like the look of the couple of lonely losers, dry and desperate in the deserted bar. And who could have blamed them..? We eventually hopped on the monorail ourselves, intending to head for the Grand Floridian and Mizner’s Lounge. Except Mizner’s didn’t open until 5pm - aaargh!!!! Have you ever felt like the whole bartending world's against you???

After a brief look around the shops, we returned to the Contemporary where a lone cast member appeared to be setting up. It seems the Outer Rim opens at 4.30pm which was definitely an improvement on Mizner’s but really not that impressive on a scale of 1 to 10... I mean, what’s a thirsty couple to do? Well, we patiently waited until the clock struck half past four and ordered a couple of glasses of Magicale - an acceptable alternative to Rosa Regale...

Several snifters later, we decided it might be time to get glam for dinner at the Cali Grill so returned to our room. Why is it that one minute you seem to have bags of time and then, a mere nanosecond later, you're late, you're late, for a very important date??? Suffice to say, it happens to me all the time and tonight was no exception. Suddenly, we were teetering on the edge of tardiness so needed to race along the connecting bridge that links Bay Lake Tower to the Contemporary which, in heels, wasn't fun. Well, that's what Richard said... Furthermore, the wind was now really whipping through the walkway which meant my hairdo was rapidly becoming more of a hair don't! I wasn't happy...

But all was forgotten once we upstairs in the Cali Grill. We started the evening off with a couple of Kir Royales whilst perusing the menu. I ordered the California Roll followed by Seared Ostrich Fillet whilst my partner in fine dining enjoyed Yellowfin Tuna Three Ways and the Crispy Chicken. We shared a bottle of red - merlot, I believe. We shared a Valrhona Chocolate Cake with Cherries for dessert which was 100% heavenly!!! Sadly, the Boony Doon Framboise no longer appeared on the dessert wine menu but they did have an alternative (Pacific Rim Framboise, I think) which was just as delicious and perfect with coffee...

We watched Hallowishes as we toasted the holiday and our upcoming cruise. We toasted each other and our almost-27 years together!!! We toasted the chef, the server, DVC and I'm pretty sure we toasted Justin Lee Collins...

justin-celeb.jpg

...(this hairy Bristolian and his family are rather popular in our house) but of course that could have just been a dream... Night, night... xxx

The final morning dawned grim, grey and rain-soaked. This was something of a shame as we had to get across property to the Dolphin to collect the hire car before making a start on the final lap of our pre-cruise journey. Richard did the usual coffee run whilst I repacked our small case. As we said goodbye to our room, I finally noticed that the abstract picture above our bed was Pluto!!! At last, I hear you cry!!!

Photo0110.jpg

We left the luggage plus Owners Locker with Bell Services and made our way out of Bay Lake Tower for the last time. As we were crossing the walkway, I noticed that both sides of the path were littered with dead bugs - YUK!!! More disappointing was the fact that Richard had noticed this carnage when he collected our coffee first thing in the morning and, almost 4 hours later, it was still in evidence... But no time to dally as the Dolphin and our hire carriage awaited!!! We collected a funky Dodge Nitro with minimal fuss and were on the road to Port Canaveral within the half hour... I found a classic rock station which belted out some familiar tunes and, as we drove along the Beachline Expressway, the clouds lifted and the sun peeked through - a great omen!!!

Before long we caught our first glimpse of the Magic and, within minutes, had arrived at the terminal!!! Luggage was dropped off with the porters, the car parked and finally we were where we wanted to be - walking towards the Magic with seven whole days of cruising stretching out before us...

See you onboard! Mine's a Bahama Mama...

:lmao: I can't believe you fell over aswell! What are we like???? At least you didn't seem to suffer any lasting injuries.

What a disaster that "almost DIS meet" turned out to be! I never did get your text when I got home after all that either. :rotfl2: I am sure we will meet up soon. ;)

As for JLC - we love him too.....infact we saw him once, he was on the same flight as us coming back from Orlando in Sept 2006.
Although we were in UC and he was in PE! :snooty: :lmao:

Thanks Karen, I have learnt a lot from your latest installment. Well I never knew that the bars had opening times .. I thought they were open all day :confused3 Nice to know there's a good alternative to Rosa Regale (the Magicale - must give that a go) .. and that you like to make toasts to Justin Lee Collins - Happy Days

Oh blomming heck, you've posted another day .. back in a mo :rotfl:

I look forward to reading about your antics on the Disney Magic :thumbsup2

I know! I nearly said something on your trippie but didn't want look like I was copying... ;) :rotfl2::lmao: It was so embarrassing - especially as I think the cast member was worried I might sue but it was totally my fault. I'm always hurting myself...

A dry meet in a closed bar - that's so rubbish it didn't deserve to happen!!! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Wow!!! And you didn't offer to swap!!! Love that programme where he tries different hobbies. His family are so sweet - especially his son, Archie Bear....

OK Karen, I'm hook, can't wait for the next instalment. :thumbsup2

Yeah you've started!

I see you put a little test in to check we were reading closely, you said you stayed in room 8008 then posted a photo saying 8009 ;)

Security in BLT is shocking...you get a key for one room and use it to get into a different one. :scared1: ;)

We paid for our parking at Dover for the Baltic cruise last night so I'm looking forward to hearing all about your trip on the Magic to ramp up the excitement. :goodvibes

Karen,
My sympathy/empathy about the painful fall. I do understand. I once managed to catch the toe of my sandal on the curb and go hurtling to the pavement on Main Street, a very busy Main Street. Points of contact were an elbow, a knee, and a front tooth that hit the trolley track. Kevin and Matt each grabbed an arm and had me upright almost before I'd caught my breath--and before any helpful CMs had a chance to offer me recompense for my pain and suffering! I have a friend who had a nasty fall in (get ready for this) Victoria & Albert's! I believe we have reason to suspect that WDW has sudden, dangerous bursts of gravity. Glad your fall didn't ruin your day.

Karen,
I have a friend who had a nasty fall in (get ready for this) Victoria & Albert's!

I believe Matt and I were on hand to administer first aid and assistance with walking at this accident scene as well! You don't find decent gents like Matt and I everywhere you know. :rotfl2:

Karen - lovely report, I'm very much looking forward to reading about your cruise.

Kev
