More Countries are Worried about US faking evidence of WMD

VIENNA, March 31 (Reuters) - Countries opposed to the U.S.-led war in Iraq have begun to demand that U.N. arms experts be called in to verify any discoveries of weapons of mass destruction announced by the United States or Britain.

Washington and London are expected to seize on any such finds as justification for their invasion. Western forces have already made much of their discovery of gas masks, protection suits and chemical warfare antidotes in captured Iraqi bases. ....

"Evaluations (of any WMD finds) must be made by U.N. inspectors," a French official close to the prime minister's office told Reuters, on condition of anonymity.

"If there are claims by coalition forces about discovering weapons of mass destruction... only international inspectors can make a conclusive assessment of the origin of these weapons," Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told the upper house of parliament last week.

"No other evaluation and final conclusion can be accepted." ...

U.N. inspectors say they still have a valid mandate to hunt for and destroy WMD in Iraq on the basis of Security Council resolutions still in force, including 1441 which returned inspectors to Baghdad late last year after a four-year hiatus. ....

Another French government official said the revelation by nuclear inspectors that documents offered by the United States and Britain as evidence Iraq tried to buy uranium from Niger had been forged demonstrated the need for U.N. verification.

"The discovery of the fake documents showed the importance of having an independent eye," the official said. "The (U.N.) inspectors are reliable and no one can contest their point of view." ....

The Foreign Ministry of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, said the "sole party that can confirm the existence of WMD in Iraq...is the U.N. inspection team".

To be honest, I could care less if they are worried or not. What I care about if they are used and that our military is protected! This is all about weapons and tactics right now. When it is all said and done I am sure the politicians will start thier ussual garbage. Right now the military needs to get the job done quickly.

LOL. These incompetent inspectors were smart enough to catch Bush and Powell submitting forged documents. Of course the CIA also knew that the these documents were forged but Powell and Bush used these documents anyway. That fact that Bush saw fit to lie to the American public in the State of Union and Powell lied to the UN Security Council citing material that he knew was forged should cause one to wonder how far Bush will go. The concept that Bush and Powell used documents that they knew were forged is shocking to me.

I also think that they are desperate to find them. They NEED to find them to justify all of their arguments.

What will they do if they never find them?

Gee, I expected they would be right out in the open for all the world to see... Hussein has hidden them, probably in some of his underground hideouts. Remember this- if they didn't exist, why wouldn't Hussein let the inspectors have free run of the country and check wherever they like? Why wouldn't he have had all the documentation proving their destruction?? Be patient people.

I'm not going to speak against my country at a time of war, but I do find it odd they have come up with NO WMD's yet.

The war's been going on for 10 days for crying out load. I think our new 24 hour, must-make-some-news press has conditioned the public to have a completely unrealistic view of the world. It took over 60 days to get the Taliban out of Kabul, and that was with a lot less organized resistance.

To suppose that ANY president (Bush, Clinton, Democrat, Republican) would make stuff up in order to have U.S. service people killed for his own agenda is about as sick as you can get!

That's partly because our guys are busy getting shot at for the time being. But we have found lots of "hints" along the way.... Chem suits, antidotes, decontamination equipment, etc. I think it's safe to say "the good stuff" isn't stashed with the cannon fodder stationed between us and the Republican Guards.

It's interesting to see some countries laying the groundwork to defend their inaction when the dust settles and it turns out the US and UK's charges against Saddam were correct. Pretty sad.

I'm well aware that our soldiers are being shot at. I support them and pray for them 100%.

I still find it "odd" that after an hours worth of evidence that Powell presented to the UNSC, with the hint that there was even more evidence he could not present, that nothing but antidotes and masks have been found. It's not surprising they were found. They're not on the list of things Iraq wasn't allowed to have. In fact it would be wise for any country to have those things these days.

I'm not saying that our government is wrong. Believe me, I hope and pray that they are right for this country's sake.

Pretty sad that I'm praying Saddam has WMD.

I think people that expected us to produce saddam's WMD assume we have access to the whole country. We have not defeated all of the Iraq army yet. The most likely place for WMD is in baghdad and that's one place we have no access to at the moment. I believe it's the most likely location of WMD right now because I think there's a good chance saddam is contemplating using them on our troops when we get there. I believe saddam just might want to go out in a blaze of glory, so to speak, and he's already shown a disregard for the lives of his own people. Hopefully not, but we just might find saddam's WMD in a spectacular way before this is all over.

Hasn't Iraq launched scuds? If so, he has already used WMD. These were banned for Iraq to have and it is the smoking gun!

I don't think he has launched SCUDS. I think the press was using that term early on, but I believe they were wrong....you just didn't hear too much about that.
