More Adventures in WDW: June, November and December Trip Reports

I didn't notice Goofy's antlers until you pointed them out :thumbsup2

I'd never heard of the closing ceremonies before at AK. Thanks for those shots! :goodvibes

Seems like that closing show is one of the best kept secrets at Disney. I didn't know about it until I started planning this trip. Maybe it's pretty new. Glad you enjoyed the photos.

By the time we got to Downtown Disney, the sun had gone down, and the temperature had dropped a little. I was a good thing that we had some light jackets in the car. We went ahead and parked near Pleasure Island and made our way to the Marketplace.

pigetsbetter-600.jpg

This isn’t a very good picture, but I just couldn’t pass up the irony of the shot. If you look closely, you can see that on the other side of the sign, a number of the lights- including the half of the neon sign that reads “Pleasure”- are burned out. It looked so sad to see Pleasure Island falling apart while the clubs sat empty that the phrase “It Just Gets Better!” seemed all wrong for the scene. Little did we know that not long after that, they would announce their plans for Hyperion Warf and the revitalization of the area. After that, it started to make sense why upkeep on Pleasure Island didn’t seem to be a high priority.

pollocamperonow-600.jpg

Over at the Marketplace, Pollo Campero was getting ready to open in the former McDonalds location. I’ll have more about this place in the December report.

wodnov1-600.jpg

Of course, we visited World of Disney, and thanks to the display in the center of the store, I still managed to get an obligatory Castle shot without even making it to the Magic Kingdom.

wodnov2-600.jpg

While Christmas wasn’t quite in full swing at Downtown Disney yet (a bunch of the decorations weren’t up and Santa’s Village was still being built), the displays in the World of Disney were all ready for the Holidays.

wodnov3-600.jpg

Taking pictures of some of the more obscure characters on the ceilings of the World of Disney seems to be turning into a tradition for me. Here’s Archimedes the owl from The Sword in the Stone from the bird room.

wodnov4-600.jpg

Nearby were a couple of squirrels from Sleeping Beauty.

wodnov5-600.jpg

Disney’s original Chicken Little from the old short.

wodnov6-600.jpg

Another mural in another part of the store. This one’s on the wall and not the ceiling, though.

wodnov7-600.jpg

Belle had on her winter cloak for the season.

wodnov8-600.jpg

wodnov9-600.jpg

For those were asking who Duffy was in my December pre-trip, here he is. This would be the first of many Duffy sightings to come in the December trip.

wodnov10-600.jpg

The Villains room.

wodnov11-600.jpg

Lumiere looks very festive, but I wonder if a candelabra really needs a scarf to keep him warm.

wodnov12-6002.jpg

I can’t remember ever seeing the display of dishes from Beauty and the Beast before. How cool is that?

teammickeys1-600.jpg

Next we headed over to Team Mickey’s and Tren-D.

teammickeys2-600.jpg

cruellawindow1-600.jpg

Tren-D had a new window display based on one of Disney’s most famous fashionistas.

cruellawindow2-600.jpg

I’m still not too sure if Cruella would wear anything with a mouse’s head on it, unless it was maybe the head off of a real mouse.

duffyouat-600.jpg

Inside Once Upon a Toy, we had another Duffy sighting. I’m telling you, this bear is everywhere!

dtdtreenight1-600.jpg

Outside the Christmas tree was up and lit for the evening.

dtdtreenight2-600.jpg

A closer look at some of the ornaments.

dtdtreenight3-600.jpg

christmasdalmatian-600.jpg

Another Dalmatian inside Disney Days of Christmas. This store was pretty crowded, so I don’t think we stayed very long. After looking through a couple of other stores (I remember the pin shop and I want to say we might have gone into the Art of Disney), we headed back towards Pleasure Island.

novaera-600.jpg

Between Pleasure Island and West Side, we saw Nova Era again. I think I mentioned this in the June report, but they used to play in the Italy pavilion in EPCOT and were one of our family’s favorite acts there. We only stayed and listened for a little bit since we had to drive home that night. It was a great day, and since our December trip was right around the corner, there would be more great days to come.

Next chapter: End-of-trip reflections

I know I sound repetitive but, great shots! :goodvibes

Did it seem like they were shoving Duffy down your throat? I've read a couple of TRs were people think that they were pushing Duffy too hard. What is your opinion?

I thought the same thing about Lumiere, he's on fire, does he have to stay warm? :rotfl:

I just read about Hyperion Wharf. Its about time they do something with Pleasure Island, it seems like an abandoned ghost town.

I had not heard about DTD getting a new look in Pleasure Island. What exactly is Hyperion Wharf?

Great pictures from DTD :) I don't know if Cruella would wear them or not but those boots are too cute

Nice update :)

Thanks. :)

I think "shoving Duffy down your throat" is a bit too strong of a statement from what we experienced, but he certainly went from being nowhere to popping up in some obvious (most shops had a shelf of Duffys for sale) and some unexpected places. Let's just say, he's in a lot of places, but isn't too obtrusive.

I'm eager to see how Hyperion Wharf turns out. But just about anything has to be better than what it is now.

I had not heard about DTD getting a new look in Pleasure Island. What exactly is Hyperion Wharf?

Hyperion Wharf is a new shopping and dining distric that will be replacing Pleasure Island. Apparently, it's going to be a modern take on turn-of-the-century waterfront parks. The DIS has some more info about it on their site, plus I think there's some concept art of it on the official Disney blog somewhere.

Great pictures from DTD :) I don't know if Cruella would wear them or not but those boots are too cute

Nice update :)

Knowing her background with crazy clothes, I don't think disagreeing on Cruella about fashion is necissarily a bad thing.

Even though I feel a little silly about doing a wrap-up for a day trip, I thought I’d so some reflections for the sake of having all the basic information together in one place. Hope that you enjoy this look back on our day at Disney.

Weather:
daytripping-weather.jpg

The weather for the day was absolutely gorgeous- pleasant temperatures, plenty of blue skies and not a drop of rain the entire day. It was a little cool in the early morning and in the evening, but only enough to break out a sweater or light jacket. On top of the weather being great for us, it also was great for all the animals, and we found them to be much more active in November than in previous trips during the warmer months.

Crowds and Wait Times:
daytripping-crowds.jpg

Crowds weren’t too much of a problem at all. The park still felt busy, I never seem to remember seeing any of the wait times getting above 30 minutes. The longest waits of the da turned out to be 20 minutes for Primeval Whirl. We only used Fastpass once for DINOSAUR, but the wait time was pretty manageable and we could have done without it. Everything else was around 10 minutes or less- including virtually walking right on Expedition Everest after the parade!

Attraction Highlights:
daytripping-attractions.jpg

There weren’t any new attractions to try here since our last visit, but this would be our first time seeing both the Adventure Begins opening ceremony before rope drop and the Adventures’ Celebration Gathering closing ceremony at the Oasis. I thought the former was really a charming little show and was a great way to start a day in the park. The later was a nice too and had the added bonus of a little street party (almost like a mini-Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It!) for those who wanted to get involved. Plus, it was nice to have something sort of entertainment to end the day at the park since Animal Kingdom doesn’t do any fireworks and night parades. As far as the rest of the attractions, some of the highlights for me included a fantastic ride on Kilimanjaro Safaris- complete with sightings of a number of animals we usually seem to miss (most notably the cheetahs and warthogs) and a bunch of baby animals, a great performance of Finding Nemo the Musical, and a ride on one of my favorite Disney thrills, Expedition Everest.

Dining:
daytripping-dining.jpg

We only managed to have one meal at Disney on this trip and ate at Restaurantosaurus in Dinoland. The food was good, perhaps just a little above average from your normal Disney fast food, but the real selling points for this place have to be the fun and funky dino-themed décor and plenty of air-conditioned dining rooms. It was a great midday break after spending most of the morning outside on the safari and animal trails.

Characters:
daytripping-characters2.jpg

This was another trip of some great character meet-and-greets. Over the course of day, I ended up meeting and getting photos of 10 different characters in the Animal Kingdom. Not bad for really only visiting three meet-and-greet locations! Out of the ten, two of them- Thumper and Miss Bunny from Bambi- were new for me. These bunnies really were adorable and a lot of fun to get photograph. Other character highlights of the day included my first time seeing Goofy and Pluto at their nicely themed new location in Dinoland USA and seeing a number of classic characters that I don’t normally seem out in many other places, specifically Jimininy Cricket, who was in Rafiki’s Planet Watch, and Meeko (with Pocahontas) and Brer Bear, both of which were with Thumper and Miss Bunny in Camp Minnie-Mickey.

Holiday Events:
daytripping-christmas.jpg

Even though it wasn’t even Thanksgiving yet, Christmas time was almost in full swing at the Animal Kingdom. Many of the Christmas decorations were up around the park- most notably the giant Christmas tree at the park entrance, the numerous Character Christmas trees throughout Camp Minnie-Mickey and the some fun retro decorations (including one large Santa hat for one of the dinos) at Dinoland. Downtown Disney (especially the Marketplace) had a number of decorations up as well, but wasn’t completely decorated yet.

Along with the decorations, Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade was already running as well. This was our first time seeing this Holiday version of the parade and enjoyed it, but I think that I would have been disappointed if I was expecting it to be drastically different from the normal parade. It’s really the same parade with a few Christmas songs added to the soundtrack occasionally, some new costumes for the characters and decorated floats. Still, all the decorations were a lot of fun to see, and we enjoyed the parade.

Universal Studios:
daytripping-universal.jpg

Since I started trip report with a look at my and Buzz’s first trip to Universal Studios, it seems fitting to end the report with a little something about it here. We really enjoyed the park. The theming really surpassed my expectations and the attractions were (with a few exceptions) fantastic. Jaws, The Simpsons Ride, Revenge of the Mummy and Men in Black Alien Attack turned out to be some of my favorites of the day, along with Lucy- A Tribute (a must-see if you’re a fan of Lucille Ball or I Love Lucy). The many character meet-and-greets there were also highlights of the day for me. Lucy and Ricky Ricardo had to be my favorites, but the characters from The Simpsons, Madagascar and Scooby-Doo were a lot of fun too. All in all, it was a fantastic day, and I can’t wait to be able to go back to Universal and finally visit Islands of Adventure.

Well, that does it for November. If anyone has any questions about the trip let me know and I’ll try to help. If not, I hope you’ll stick around because I should be starting our December “Christmas Vacation” trip report pretty soon.

Thanks. Hopefully I'll get to start on Christmas pretty soon.

Thanks. I think finding all those details is more fun for me at Downtown Disney than shopping. For all the time we were there that evening, I don't think either of us bought one thing.

Great report and pictures! Thanks for taking the time to share.
I look forward to more to come.

Glad you enjoyed the report, and I hope you enjoy the Christmas report too.

Well, it’s finally time to start working on my report for our December family vacation to Walt Disney World. I’ll be starting on it (hopefully) soon, but until then, here’s a quick look at what’s to come in the report.

Since it’s been months since I wrapped up the pre-trip report (and since I’m sure not everyone reads pre-trips anyway), I thought I'd start by reviewing the cast for this trip. If you've been reading the June and November reports, you know me and my brother Buzz, but since this is the first part of the report that includes Buzz and my parents, I thought this was a good time to re-introduce them:

:earsgirl: Mom- My and Buzz’s mother. Mom is interested in learning about history and different cultures, so World Showcase at EPCOT is one of her favorite places in Disney World. She also loves to go to the restaurants around the World and also enjoys visiting all the resorts, especially at Christmastime to see all the decorations.

:earsboy: Dad- My and Buzz’s father. Dad likes to relax while in the World, and can often be found sitting on a bench and soaking in the atmosphere. He also likes gardening and checking out the gardens and landscaping in the World, and he is also a fan of Tim Burton and especially The Nightmare Before Christmas.

And in the report itself, you can expect to see…

riversidefire-300.jpg

A three-night stay at Port Orleans Riverside…

candlelight-300.jpg

A day at EPCOT including the Candlelight Processional dining package, Holidays Around the World entertainment and a meet-and-greet with Duffy the Disney Bear…

wintersummerland-300.jpg

Our first visit to Disney’s Winter Summerland Minature Golf…

snowman-300.jpg

Dining, shopping and entertainment at Downtown Disney…

kidanitree-300.jpg

And visits to a number of resorts- including Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Jambo House and Kidani Village, Disney’s Boardwalk, Yacht Club, Beach Club and Port Orleans French Quarter- to enjoy dining and Christmas decorations.

Next chapter: Arriving at Riverside

Sounds great! Can't wait to hear all about it :goodvibes

Thanks. I thought I might have the first chapter up this week, but I think I'm going to wait a while longer. I think after pretty much 9 months straight of working on this report has burned me out a little, so I'll probably take a little break before I begun this one.

Well, it’s been over two weeks since I posted the intro for my December trip report, and I still have barely started working on the first chapter. Even though it was a really fantastic trip and I would love to share it, I just cannot get excited about this report. I think it’s a combination of being a little burned out from the last two reports, not really wanting to go through the over 2,000 photos I took to find the good ones, and becoming a little bored with writing trip reports the same way again and again. I’m doing a little brainstorming in how to make working on this report feel more like a hobby again instead of a chore. Until then, I’ll probably be continuing this break from working on the December report.

On a more exciting note, guess where I visited recently?

No, not Disney, but close. Here’s a hint:

hogwarts-600.jpg

Yes, I finally broke down and went to Islands of Adventure (and that Wizarding World of Harry Potter that everyone keeps talking about) for the first time. Buzz and I both went and had a great time. I didn’t enjoy it as much as Disney or even as much as I enjoyed Universal Studios, but it was fun and had some great rides, a few characters and that delicious Butterbeer. I probably won’t be posting a report of the day at least until the December report is completed, but since it feels like I’ve mentioned over and over that I’ve wanted to go that I’d let you all know that I have.

Anyway, I can’t promise when I’ll finally get around to starting December, but hopefully it won’t be too long of a break.

Hey, I totally understand. I know people do get burned out. And you have had soa many exciting reports already.
I'm glad you got to go to IOA. I sure hope to give it a try in the future too.

Hey things happen. That's why we subscribe to threads, so we know when you post. We'll be here when you return :goodvibes

WOO HOO, you finally made it to WWOHP (and IOA)!

I hear ya on doing the reports, that's kind of how I felt after my August one. Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of fun sharing trips with other people but it is a lot of work! LOL. Still here when you're ready to return. :)
