More about Trusted Traveler programs

We went to Hawaii for Thanksgiving week and were very pleasantly surprised to get TSA pre-check for our outbound flight from JFK. We're a family of 5 with a mildly disabled 5 year old and we were traveling with 2 laptop computers, 3 ipad minis, etc. It was super convenient! Sadly, we did not get pre-check for our inbound flight but the Kona airport is easy and small anyway. My step-dad is part of the Global Entry program (my brother lives in London) and he loves it!

It does seem kind of confusing but my understanding is it goes like this

Random Pre-check- not a frequent flyer on any airline you just happen to get lucky, least likely to get it and it will be infrequent

Pre-check because you are a frequent flyer on a certain airline and they invite you to be part of the program. More likely to get it on that airline

Global Entry or TSA Pre-check, you have applied and been approved, most likely to get it on any airline

Even stranger, I was sent thru the pre-check lane anyway.

Actually that's part of the plan also. They are picking out random people and just sending them to the Pre Check line. It's driving a lot of people nuts because the people being sent don't know what it is or what to do and they are screwing up the lines.
The whole idea here is that it's increasing randomness based on your level of risk. A verified traveler will get pre check far more often than an unverified but they won't always get it.
