When is a good time to start looking for a reservation at AKV if I want to go in May 2009? I will need to rent points. (not a DVC owner). I think next month would be about 11 mos out..is that when I should start posting?

Is it even possible to get reservations at AKV or is it just jamm packed all the time? I've read a little about it being hard to get into right now because of construction of a new part?

I don't know. Should I just try a different resort? And if so, when should I start posting that I am looking for points to rent?

Start now asking for what you want. Maybe you'll get what you need. If so, great. If now, then start thinking about plan B.

The OP should also think about the fact that becuase renting a reservation from a member is a private transaction, it may not be subject to change or cancellation. So you should not start looking for a rental until you a completely certain of the dates you want to stay and that there is no risk that you will need to change those dates at some point in the future (or that you can buy trip insurance that will adequately cover that risk for you). Best of luck -- Suzanne

The best time to look for an owner renting at AKV is NOW. You want to have everything set up so they can call and make that reservation right at the 11 month booking window for your dates.

Yes..but now I am a little nervous to post looking for points to rent. I know the dates I want to go and I don't anticipate changing dates or anything, but sometimes things do come up...especially 11 months in advance. What is the cancellation policy for DVC? Does it vary by member, would I just be out a deposit, or would I be out the entire amount? I'm definitely not a *flake* ;) or anything but I'm stuck on the "what if..".

there is no official DVC cancellation policy as you would be renting from an individual. you may be able to cancel a few months out...more typically you can't. you could be out the whole amount...if the owner can find another renter on short notice, you may get a break.

you should definitely be clear on all terms of the rental agreement before proceeding.

here's the thread you need to learn the basics about renting:
