Monthly Grocery Budget Challenge!!

I went shopping yesterday and I purchased for the end of my month. My posts are on page #1, posts 2-7. My shopping this week was totally different. I usually purchase some lunch stuff. Neither of the kids have lunches at school this week. So they are home with me, but next week DS starts a program to get ready for the HS entrance exam and to get to know new kids - every day 8-2:30 and DD will begin SAT prep course @ 2 days a week 8 - 2:30. So I will go back to getting lunch stuff then, but gave them a free junk week. (End of school treats) I am going to see my budget for the month then, I and I will post the totals soon...

OK, I'll play.

I set my budget at $105 per week....used to be $125 per week and I keep trying to cut back. So, $105 per week x 52 weeks divided by 12 months = approx $455 per month. So far this month I've spent $337.14 for the month and there are 2 more Sundays left(I shop on Sundays) which is another $210 if I stay on budget which means I'm going to be waaaay over for the month but this is a 5 Sunday month and that always happens. We'll see how I do.

So $337.14 spent/ $455 budgeted = $117.87 left to spend this month.

My previous post on June 16th is quoted above so
as of 6/16 $337.14 spent/$455 budgeted
as of 6/23 $478.28spent/$455 budgeted.....and there's 1 more week to go in June! This being a 5 Sunday month has messed me up! Although, this was only the 4th Sunday and I'm already over. I know part of it is buying convenience foods for the kids now that they're out of school. Oh well, let's hope I do better next month.

So, I went back and checked how I've done this year. I use quicken so it was easy to look at:

I've averaged $526 per month so far for the year. I was over my budgeted amount of $455 per month all months but one. I need to either work harder to get these costs down or adjust my budget.

Weekly Dinner Menu - Sunday through Sunday.... I am starting a new monthly for July that will start June 30 (a Monday) and it will be a 5 week budget month...

Total Budget - Monthly $375.00 actual $288.27 SAVINGS $86.73
Week #1 Budget $25.00 actual $24.58 SAVINGS $.42
Week #2 Budget $25.00 actual $22.60 SAVINGS $2.40

Monthly Savings $96.60 - I am going to put an additional $100.00 on my Macy's bill which will bring it down to almost nothing left :cool1: and I am going to adjust my July grocery bill down by some.... Make sure to check out the post!!

So my weekly when all was said and down, this family of four lived on a monthly total of $378.40 (okay I will round up to $380.00) for a weekly total (12 months divided by 52 weeks) okay drum roll ........   $87.69!!! Over by $12.69 of the $75.00 per week challenge. But we ate well, lived happy, and I now know I can adjust downward even with the increasing prices and be happy. Summer will be a challenge!!!!! Hope everyone is up to it!!!!!!

Going strong here!! BUT I have a question??

After reading some of the other threads I think I may be alone on this one...

My children have to ask me if they can have a snack and they have to ask if they can have anything to drink other than water... They will give me a blanket question, like can I have a snack, and I will say yes, and nothing is off limits, but they have to ask...

DD is almost 16 and DS will be 13 soon.... Am I the only one who does this?

And the rule in our house is eat what Mom made for dinner... Exceptions only apply if they are going somewhere with time restrictions or are sick.. I refuse to make 4 different meals and if you don't eat don't come knocking for snacking!!

Okay so I asked two questions:bitelip:, am I a mean Mom??

My too. I'm mean also. My kids are little (7,6, 16 months) and I think by the time they are 16, I'll probably let them make their own choices. Maybe. But for now, they ask. As for dinner, I make them take one bite of things they hate. This is the way my parents did it with me & I thought it was a good idea. I like to say that I am not a short order cook. :stir: You eat what everyone else is eating or you can have an Uncrustable (we make our own) from the freezer. This works for my kids as pb&j isn't their favorite so they only make that choice if they feel they have no choice & despise dinner. And if they have made that choice, I watch them carefully as there is nothing that irritates me more than a kid refusing to eat dinner because "they aren't hungry" & then an hour later eating a whole bag of chips. :furious:

Are we gonna do a July one of these? I have sooo enjoyed it!

I just finished my June shopping (will post details later tonight) and have really enjoyed knowing exactly what I spent. I went over (I think) by about $25. That was feeding extra people (lots of extras) quite a few times and having to get more expensive stuff for 4 days of picnics away. Also, I ended up buying a lot of gluten/dairy free stuff for my nephew which is expensive. But next month the stuff I need to buy for him should be just absorbed into my regular stuff.

Yes I am going to start a July Grocery Budget thread, I will start it at the end of the week. Than everyone can get ready for July. I am glad it helps. It definetely helped me!!

Wow, Tinker'n'Fun, I'm impressed! :thumbsup2

Tell us how you did it! (Please?)

Great job!

I have a few, other posters are much more organized than I, but I will post my list...

1. I have taken the time to walk each grocery store we have WITHOUT buying anything. I price compared items that I would normally buy each week/month. I noted if it was a sale price or normal price. I did this by myself. No kids, no DH. I realized that one grocery store (Wegmans) and two discount stores (Aldi's and SuperWalmart) had consistantly lower prices on the items we eat most often. I cut the other stores out and only look for sales items that with a coupon would make it worth me going to these other stores. NOW don't get me wrong all are stores are extremely close to each other so gas is not the problem here. I continue to make sure that the stores prices are within line. I noticed this month that SuperWalmart is NOT worth going to. I can wait for a sale or by an off brand of the items that I may need. I will re-evaluate this decision in a few months.

2. I use Sam's Club for certain items every month, this eliminates the need to find these items on sale, match it with a coupon, etc. Plus, it is the same each month for me. If Sam's raises prices, I will re-examine these items. My best example is Laundry Soap. It is around the same price or a bit cheaper at Sams than it would be on sale at the local grocery store... BUT if a local grocery store has a great sale I will still go there if I have a coupon that brings the price down even more. These purchases are saved for months when the budget is tight.

3. Coupons and Time! I know that many people do not have the extra time, but I make it. I cut coupons at sport's practices, waiting in the car, in the dr's office. I only half watch some of my favorite shows so that I can organize them and make sure that they have not expired. I use a box as a coupon holder, the little things they sell are useless IMO. Send for freebies whenever you can, they come with great coupons most of the time that are not in the stores/papers. I allow myself time on Sunday night to read all the ads, DH and kids are forewarned not to bother me, and DH knows HE must help the kids, or not eat!!!! If there is a coupon that is really great, I ask my neighbors/family to cut if for me if they will not be using it... I in return will offer my extra's to them....

4. I do the CVS thing, but not to the extend of some of the DISers. Mostly for toothpaste, soap, and shampoo. I combine these trips to coincide with prescription day.

5. Menu's. Yes as boring and as tedious as they are I have a menu calendar. On one calendar I write activities for the month. I put it side by side with my meal calendar. Each week I make a dinner menu. And mostly I do stick my it. I can read back each month to see what was good, what wasn't. We only have 1, yes 1, yes 1... this is important... 1 night where I will throw caution to the wind and eat out. I would rather be miserable making grilled cheese sandwiches that were not on the dinner menu than spend $30.00 because I didn't feel up to cooking. There is little to no effort in soup, sandwich, and or a salad/fruit. You have to remember this. And it does NOT kill your significant other or children if they have to help. Everyone gets tired...

6. Snacks are treats. Water is a staple. Soda Pop is on the endagered food list. Fruit and Veggies rank highest in the food chain. And now for my get flamed statement...:furious:, I do NOT allow my kids to drink milk like it is cheap juice or water. Milk is expensive and 3 glasses a day is more than enough. They eat other foods with calcium throughout the day. I could never understand families who buy 5-8 gallons a week?? Cereal is a staple, but you only use as much milk as needed?? Oh and cereal can be a snack without milk. I personally apologize to those who feel that milk is more important. I do not judge you for doing it, I just can't justify it for my family. Fruit and veggies are not considered snacks, but everyone is encourage to pick up some and eat them if they are hungry. The best thing about my system is that some items will stay in the house all month, and the kids will not even look at it... (An example, I purchased a bag of chips 2 weeks ago and there is still 1/3 of the bag left).

7. Conviction. Both of my kids pay out of their allowance/spending money for treats that I do not purchase. I do not go to Dairy Queen. Why, when I can get a Sundae Treat bar at the store for about $5.00 that will feed all 4 of us for 2 times. YES Dairy Queen is great, but not worth ruining my budget. Conviction.... being able to say NO even when your kids and hubby pout!!

8. So many things in life are expensive, but when you really look at it the best things in life are free and priceless...

Spending time with your family

A cheap frozen pizza and movie night (a Sunday night tradition)

Watching Little League Baseball/Softball/Soccer... Even if your kids are NOT on the team

A walk through the park or neighborhood

Give your kids the camera, thus allowing them to take random pictures, seeing what your children see through the camera

So I guess I will end with this. My kids used to complain all the time about what we had and didn't have. This friends house always get this and we never do. This friend has better clothes.. More toys... WE HAVE NOTHING!! I listened... I never confirmed their concerns. I just listened!!

So now they are growing up a bit (DD16, DS13) and their friends are constantly saying that they would give up everything to have a family like ours. My DD and DS are best friends. My DH is my best friend. My DD and DS are just that my children, not my friends, but we do have a great time together. We fight, some days like oil and water. But at the end of day, we always say good night and I Love You. AND our bellies are full!!!

Hope this helps, Diane

My total for the month is 487.64 for all 6 of us.

Items we really go with out is cereal. I only do oat meal and my home made bread. Now in Aug I should have my own fresh vegetables that we have been growing as a family.

I updated my grocery list from the rest of last week on page 8. My total so far for the month is $407.73. My goal was to get it to $125 a week, but I'm over. I guess I failed the challenge. :worried: DH told me to stop fretting about it. He said he's not going to sacrifice nutrition to save a few bucks. It is what is is, I guess. The good news is we are leaving town tomorrow so no groceries for this week which might keep me close to the above figure for the month. With the kids home all month, it has not been easy.

And about the milk, yes we are a family who drinks lots of milk, but half of it is my DH! Even still, after one meal, 1/3 of a gallon is gone. I do not see how one gallon could last a week if everyone is having 3 cups a day. 3 cups X 4 people = 12 cups a day and there are only 16 cups in a gallon.

In our house only the children drink milk. Dh and I are not into milk. As you can see on my shopping list . I am a big cheese eater;) . I love a slice of cheddar for a snack. I also make many meals with cheese.

So I have a couple of questions. After looking at your menus and your grocery lists for the month, I'm wondering where you are getting your fresh veggies from? Your menus often say "salad" or "fresh carrots" or "fresh fruit" etc.. with the meals but I don't see much of this on your shopping lists. Only at the beginning of the month I saw romain hearts, and one store you bought a head of lettuce, 2 tomatoes and 4 cucumbers. Does that last a whole month for a familly of 4 for salads? You have "fresh carrots" as a side dish but when did you buy the carrots because I didn't see them on your lists? I realize you stock food, so it's hard to know what you have on hand already (and that seems to be the key here because you don't buy very much during the weeK), but I'd think the "fresh" items would be on the weekly lists because those don't keep. I did see a few fruits (some more weeks than others), Please clue me in on how you keep the fresh foods fresh for over a month?

Thanks so much!!

I tell everone I meet how I used to spend 800mo $5 day pp for a family of five (diapers, wipes ouch) and brought it down by %40. I had always stocked up on buy one get one free meat. Sometimes buying thirty pounds at a time. When I could I did thirty day gourmet with a friend and had meals frozen ahead. I had stopped using coupons because with three kids cutting coupons was too time consuming and messy.
Then I found grocerygame.com It links up your coupons with a computer data base of sales for your store and every week gives you a list of sales, stock up sales and freebees for your store. The great part is you never clip a coupon unless you use it. You file each weeks coupons and the list tells you what week and what company cirular to look in for each item's coupon. When I first started this I got my groceries down to $400 and was adding lots of extras that I had cut out becuase they were frivolus. Free and under a buck items frivolus or not get throw in now for the enjoyment of having little extras. Since the big grocery price increase my bill is now about $500 still not too bad. It does cost to join $1 for the first four weeks then about a $10 for eight weeks if you keep the service. She has links to electronic cuopon sites and other discounts too. If you really like it tell please tell them that tiggspring@aol.com sent you I can earn a discount. Even if you don't mention me please check this out It has saved me over $7000 since I started using it in Jan 07. With these crazy price we all need to help each other out!!! :yay: Good luck!!!

my other budget tip's
I only buy the fruits and veggies that are on sale

I get the Sunday paper and then shop by what is on sale.

I also do add compare.

I try to eat 3-4 meat less meals a week.

I do not buy paper towels

I make my own laundry soap

I make my own bread.. ( I make so much at one time and then freeze it)

I am all aboard for July - I am starting Friday with the week's shopping and doing menus for Friday through Thursday.

I looked into the grocery game a few months ago. I saved the Sunday coupons, dated the front w/ a sharpie and put them in a folder. I got the free trial (or $1.00?), but it didn't seem to help with the bulk of my groceries because I didn't buy much of the food tha comes w/ coupons. The ones I did use coupons on I didn't really need the grocery game to help. There are 2 main grocery chains here plus the Super Wal-Mart. I do my price matches at Wal-Mart anyway. So while I can see if I bought lots of foods with coupons I could benefit, I only had 4 or 5 things on each list that I might use a coupon for -- sometimes there was nothing. I went to Target yesterday and used coupons for Paper Towels, toilet paper, toothbrushes and body wash that were not part of my grocery budget. I rarely find food coupons I can use aside from a few canned things, cereal and jam.

ITA...I'm right with you. My DD9, will guzzle a gallon of ff milk in a sitting, IF we allowed it.

I also don't understand why "pump soaps" are being bought at B&BWorks, you can get them so much cheaper at Walmart, Target, etc, maybe not in cucumber melon fragrance, but maybe cucumber honeydew...

I received a couple BB&W pump soaps as an office christmas gift two years ago and still have them, sort of. I bought a gallon size bottle of refill from walmart and just refill the BB&W bottles. DSIL made a comment at the last family party we hosted about how she loves BB&W hand soap and she's so glad I had it...those cheap ones bought at the grocery store just give her a rash. BB&W is all she uses. :rotfl: She did not get a rash.

So I have a couple of questions. After looking at your menus and your grocery lists for the month, I'm wondering where you are getting your fresh veggies from? Thanks so much!!

I had 6 romaine hearts prior to the month beginning, purchased 3 more, and one head of lettuce for free. I use the green bags and have no problem with romaine hearts staying through the month. Now I can NOT purchase the bags as they do go bad too quickly. I purchased 4 zucchini and 2 cucumbers (I bought them but I must have forgot to list them?? Not sure when it happened but they would have been $1.00) I had 2 bags of baby carrots in the refrigerator also. I used the last of them today actually to make turkey soup. I am the only one who uses tomatoes so 2 large tomatoes is enough for me until the fresh ones from the garden come in. I also purchased 6 very large green peppers, and had a 5# bag of vidalia onions from Sam's. I also had celery left over. Oh yeah, I also purchased 10# russet and 5# red potatoes. Oh and broccolli crowns were purchased. I have green pepper frozen and potatoes left right now. I also have 1 romaine left and one large onion, and garlic.

Fruit:

On my list was 1 very large watermelon, 6#apples, 3 cantelopes, strawberries, and lots of banana's. I had frozen blueberries and grapes in the freezer from last month. This is enough fruit for us for the month. I also have canned pineapple that DS eats like candy and mandarin oranges. We have apples, banana's, and frozen grapes for this week.

I only had to purchase my extra's (fruit/veggies) a few times this month. I use canned and frozen veggies also. My fresh fruit/veggies will increase greatly during the summer. We definetely had enough lettuce for our salads, they are not very large unless I make chicken caesars and one Romaine heart is enough for a salad for us and may even be enough for DH to bring in his lunch the next day.

I guess it comes down to our serving sizes in my family. We have discussed this with the kids. Normal serving sizes are actually much smaller than most people think. But please trust me, we are all getting our veggies/fruits in. We are all healthy and both DD and DS are within their height/weight range (well DS is a bit low but he grew 11" this year and no matter what we give him, it doesn't work)

Also, my Mom lives 10 doors down from us and I do not add what DD and DS eat down there, or at their friends houses, and the food that they get at school.

I am going to highlight my veggies in green and fruit in red so it will be easier to see them in the post. Hope this helps...

My total for the month is 487.64 for all 6 of us.

Items we really go with out is cereal. I only do oat meal and my home made bread. Now in Aug I should have my own fresh vegetables that we have been growing as a family.

Even at $500.00 for the month you spend less per person per day than I do!! Congrats on all the good work!
