Montgomery AL apologizes to Rosa Parks

A. She's dead and can't hear the apology!

B. The people apologizing had nothing to do with the whole situation back then.

Why even bother with these meaningless apologies? It just seems like a pathetic attempt to get good publicity for yourself - Hey, we're good guys, not like those idiots back then. Like when Germany apologized for Hitler. Now if Hitler's ghost had managed to come floating by and apologize, that might have meant something, but I bet if he could somehow be brought back to life he wouldn't be apologizing.

What's even more ridiculous is that newspapers actually give coverage to these apologizers!

I wouldn't call the apology meaningless. I think if you view the apology as "meaningless" then you probably weren't the intended audience.

Using your arguement, would you also say that it's meaningless to give "Purple Hearts" or other awards to someone after they've died? Of course not, the families of the deceased care and it would mean alot to them.

The family of Rosa Parks is still around and the people who's lives she touched are here. The apology means something to them.

Better late than never, I guess.

In some ways, it's not so much trying to apologize to her personally, as it is to recognize and apologize for the mistakes of the past. For some who did live through all that, the apology may bring some measure of acknowledgement, understanding and ultimately healing.
