Montezuma's Revenge

This may sound like a silly question. Has anyone had a problem with Montezuma's Revenge from drinking/eating on any of the excursions to Grand Cayman or Cozumel? Some of the excursions include drinks like water or juice, others include margaritas and beer. One member of our party was concerned about the possibility of getting sick. As for me, I think I will bring my own bottled water in a soft sider cooler. Anybody have any experiences they would like to share? Thanks.

Hey fellow Long Islander,

Montezuma's revenge is caused by a bacteria found in Mexico, Grand Cayman has nothing to do with the revenge.

As far as Mexico, as long as you drink bottled soda (like coca-cola), bottled water, etc. , you will have no problems. All of these companies treat their water prior to bottling.

But you should still be smart, like not buying food from street venders who quite often wash their utensils, fruits, salads, etc... with ordinary tap water. This could get you sick.

No cause to worry, just be smart.

Our friend was concerned about margaritas and beer in particular. We figured that any excurusion Disney sponsors would be at a reputable place and would be less likely to be using unpurified water. I still plan to bring my own bottled water, to be on the safe side. Thanks.

Where on Long Island are you from? Nassau or Suffolk?

We went to Mr. Sanchos Beach in Cozumel on two different DCL cruises and never had any problems with sickeness. I indulged in Margaritas on both trips. Note...Mr. Sanchos beach does not let you bring in your own beverages. I had brought a cooler with bottled water and was told I could not consume anything brought in. They were very polite about and that is just their policy. I understood. The margaritas were very yummy...better than what they serve onboard.

I vacationed in Cancun a few years back and got Montezuma's Revenge when I ate at a exclusively Mexican restaurant (fried food)..........so I recommend that you stick with Disney sponsored excursions to avoid the dreaded illness!!!

From what I have observed many business post that they use purified water and ice. look for this or ask. The more well know bars and resturants all do and they want to keep the tourist healthy or they know everyone with a computer will hear about it and that is so bad for their business. We usually try to consume bottle or can beverages and stay on the safe side.
As for margaritias the worm in the booze has already taken care of the revenge for you
Be sensible, if it looks dirty or unkept walk away.

I think the brewing process as well as the alcohol would kill any bad germies in the beer! In Margaritas, your only concern would be the ice, but in Cozumel, as many have already posted, most of the establishments that cater to tourists use purified water for their ice. As for the bottled water, I don't think you need to bring your own. Once again, just look to be sure it's purified. Even if you don't go on a DCL sponsored excursion, if you stick to the main tourist areas, you're going to be fine. Not sure if you've been to COZ before, but I'll tell you, it's not what most people seem to think. Where the ship docks is a serious tourist trap kind of area, you could be anywhere in the US! There is actually a brand new shopping mall right at the port and then shop after shop, restaurants, bars, etc... all along the shore. My DH said to him it was just like Ft. Lauderdale but with Mexican decor!

BTW - on GC, everything that was served on our excursion (nt DCL sponsored) was bottled or canned.

One more thing, there are lots of DCL excursions that can be done for a ton less money than they charge, so depending on your desire to strike out on your own, you could save a lot of $$ by booking independently.

Hi fellow New Yorkers. Wantagh resident here.

While in China I was as careful as possible with all things water, but ended up "living" overnight in a hotel bathroom. A nurse came to the room in the morning and gave me medicine and a prescription.

Upon returning to the States, I mailed the medical bill in to my health insurance company. They actually called me to question the charge because the nurse wrote down that the prescription was given to the patient "for CLAMPS"...

DH has issues drinking or eating in Mexico. Do they have cans of Coke at Mr. Sanchos?

When we visited Cozumel on Royal Caribbean, we went on the Xcaret excursion and had lunch there. Hubby had coffee, and I drank something called "rice water" which tasted a lot like delicious coconut milk. It was so good that I had two or three glasses...and I paid for it dearly! It made me vow never to drink any unknown substance in Mexico, no matter how delicious or tempting. Hubby was fine with the coffee...either they used purified water or the heat killed any bacteria.

I too worry about our water consumption during our 7 day western. On our honeymoon in Jamaica we stayed at a Sandals Resort. DH and I got so sick half way through our stay. It was not pleasant.

I there something I could take with me that could help detract "the bug"?

We learned the hard way that ICE is made of water! LOL Learn from our error - order your drinks with NO ICE while in any part of Mexico.

Mjasp - we were at Mr. Sancho's Beach a few weeks ago and yes, they do serve Coke in cans. We ordered nachos and chicken flautas and we each drank sodas from the can. The funny part was that my sister had ordered a Diet Coke and the logo on the can said "Coca-Cola Light". Anyway, the food there was quite good and we didn't suffer any after-effects. Just be sure to tell them when you order a soda that you'd like it in the can.

There are probiotcs that you can take when travelling to foreign places. Probiotics are friendly bacteria that our body/intestines needs for a healthy flora environment. The same product some may use when taking antibiotics, like acidophilus. Anyway, they are good to take for travelling so if you do get something it won't be as bad or the foreign bug will be fought off w/ the good bacteria from you probiotics. I take these on a regular basis just for good health.

I've been to Mexico many times. I've also learned that I get sick there VERY easily! And for me it isn't just having to go to the bathroom. I get really ill. Personally, I intend to eat on the ship.

My tricks:

Keep your hands clean. Bring a bottle of hand cleaner or wipes with you. You can get sick by putting your hand to your mouth if your hand has been contaminated.

Drink ONLY bottled or canned drinks and ask that they be opened at your table. I know, it sounds weird. But that way you can be sure.

Don't eat anything if you are concerned. Even lettuce has been sprayed down with contaminated water before the restaurant receives it and it is drawn up into the leaves. Their food handling may be great, but you could still get sick.
