I'm serious- have any of you had a panic attack or know someone who has panic attacks? They are serious and they COULD ruin someone's day. (Edited to add- I'm talking to the people who say they just don't understand how this could upset someone so badly).
!
My opinion: If you know you're susceptible to true, full blown panic attacks that are a real physical dilemma that really would ruin your day, then don't go see the show!!! Take responsibility for your own situation. If you know that there's a chance you'll get chosen, and that is too much a risk for you to take, then don't do it. It's no different than if you know you'll get motion sick on a certain ride. You avoid it.
But if you're just a little shy, and don't like being center stage, then, just take a deep breath, decide if the hilarity is worth it to you, and make a personal decision that is right for you. Either go or don't go. If you go, then do what you can to minimize getting chosen (ask a CM, use some of these suggestions, although it looks like there's still no guarantee!) And if you get picked, then just roll with it because it's only going to last a few minutes. A few minutes of your entire life!!!! Come on! We've all survived some embarrasing moments of our lives, and most of them lasted only a few minutes! If you let it ruin your day, then your issues run a little deeper than being a little camera shy. Do not take ownership of shame. There is nothing to be ashamed of in participating. It's a mental game.
I understand camera shy. I totally get it! Like most of the population, I used to be there. Now I'm glad to say I've overcome that fear, and I'm not only comfortable in front of a crowd, but I do it regularly as a speaker. Overcoming it is possible, and life on that side is so fun and rich and rewarding and exhilerating. And yes, I still get butterflies. And I still mess up. But I get over it. Again, it's a mental discipline.
