Monsters INC Laugh Floor and Very Uncomfortable

I sat in the middle at the end seat on the middle aisle and I got picked. It was hilarious when the light flashed on me and I saw myself on the screen.

I'm serious- have any of you had a panic attack or know someone who has panic attacks? They are serious and they COULD ruin someone's day. (Edited to add- I'm talking to the people who say they just don't understand how this could upset someone so badly).

I don't have them- never have, I just suck it up and deal- but my husband used to get panic attacks over the oddest things. Thank goodness, not anymore- but it makes me more sympathetic to issues like this.

Last time we were there, when we were walking in, I looked up and saw my adorable 2 year old on the screen with the heading, "Daddy's Little Monster"- it was soooo cute!

You would have thought disney would have been sensitive to this and made areas that would not be picked on so you could decide to participate or not. Maybe make a small area lined out that lets you know that area gets picked to participate.

Yes- which is why someone who is that seriously afraid of getting onscreen should just stay out of the attraction.

No, no, no...you missed my point, or misread my intent. My point was, if her day would be that easily ruined in the Monsters Inc attraction, then she should be all means skip it.

Just an example: my day would be ruined if I became motion sick, because I pass out and throw up easily...I'd probably have to leave the park, or at least lay down for a good few hours. This is why I skip Mission Space. I would never chance ruining a day of my vacation, especially not for a 3-minute ride.

So if her day would be ruined by being on camera, then she shouldn't chance it.

That's what I meant...I'm glad you asked so I could clarify!

If it's that bad, your husband will understand, won't he? A ruined day for you is probably also a ruined day for him!

Oh, ok !! :goodvibes :thumbsup2

I thought the Laugh Floor was humorous but the whole time I was mortified for the guy they kept flashing on screen. I'm a true introvert and I would be mortified if I were the person singled out.

It's a shy thing, you extroverts won't ever understand. :)

Anyway, I did the attraction once and won't do it again because it did make me uncomfortable even though I wasn't singled out. I just hang out while DS and DH go in because they both enjoy it a lot.

I would just skip it if I was so concerned about being picked. Why sit through an attraction feeling anxious and uncomfortable? Disney time is too precious. :) Move on to an attraction you know you love.

Is it just me or did anyone else notice that the cameras seem to be hidden in the desk lamp things. If you sit on a row without a desk lamp in front of you, then you won't be picked. :confused3

Is there a way to definately not get picked or a nice way to tell them no thank you while the light and camera is on you.

When we visited last August, my daughter and husband really did not want to be chosen (it would ruin their day too!) but they enjoyed watching. On our way in, I asked a CM about it and he escorted them to an area in the back where he was sure they would not be chosen. Don't know if this is standard practice, but it made the show much more enjoyable for them.

I also think suggestions about sitting on the edges are good ones.

Good Luck!

Not necessarily. My sister and I were picked on two separate occasions. We sat in the bank and didn't sit near a desk lamp. I got flashed on the screen of "Doesn't know where she is." when I went during the Pirate and Princess Party. On another occasion, my sister got picked when one of the two-headed monsters said, "This lady looks like she knows where she lives!".

They are sensitive about it... as in they don't keep it a secret that this is an interactive show. If you do not wish to be picked, then don't attend it. I would say that people were chosen from all parts of the audiance when I went last May and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to it.

And yes, this is coming from someone who has had panic attacks in the past. I simply stay away from my triggers and don't risk the chance. A panic attack would pretty much either totally end my day or mess up a large part of it.

Well, it sounds like the answer is- talk to a CM about being seated somewhere where you won't be put on the screen if you ARE that nervous about it- not that you need to skip the show.

Just because something is interactive, when it comes to a full audience, doesn't mean that there aren't ways around it. I've seen shows where interaction is done voluntarily, which would mean those afraid of interaction could avoid it, and those where interaction is kinda thrust upon you- like Monsters Inc. Unless you've been through the attraction, you'd have no way of knowing- I had assumed it would be voluntary interaction myself!

We went on it on our last trip, and the person a few down from me was picked,(Just glad it wasn't me).

It seems the seats are in front of the two lights, so what I do is every time the camera moves to find someone, I simply slide down a few feet to where I'm between two lights. Has worked very well.

WARNING SPOILERS....IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS AT THE SHOW, READ NO FURTHER! But someone asked so here ya go...

Some of the things they do:

One guy is always picked to buy churros for everyone
One person is always picked to get up and dance
A child is picked and is in front of a monster or between two monsters
Then there is a story line (The Monsters Inc one of course) where they pick the characters, Mike, Sully, Boo, Randall. They tell the story and the person has to get in character.
Then there is one guy picked who "scares" the monsters (this is always a huge hit and recurrs throughout the show).
A person is picked for a psychic reading (this is the one I did!)

Hmmm I think that's it. It's a lot of fun and always good for a laugh or twenty.

We saw Monsters twice on our last trip and *both* times, my DH was picked to buy churros for everyone. :confused3 :rotfl:

This has become one of our new favorites. :thumbsup2

We really enjoy this show. We had a lamp in front of us and my husband got pick. It was in august and it was pouring rain out... my husband was wearing a bright plastic blue raincoat..He pop up on the screen and the monster said "Look they wrapped the humans in plastic to keep them fresh" It was one of the funny moment of the whole trip.

sit to the edges, they pick from the middle of the crowd.

Not completely true- we sat in the back section all the way to the left and the guy next to me was picked to do the dance. The guy behind me was the churro guy. So they can pick anyone, anywhere.

When we were there in August my dh barely got this statement out of his mouth when we looked up on the screen and saw he and my ds who was sitting on his lap. They were the two headed monster and he was asking my dh questions about our home state and it was just very funny because my dh is on the shy side and was sure that he wouldn't be chosen because he was not sitting in front of a lamp.

I second the advice to ask the CM on the way in if there is a place to sit that will mean you don't get picked.

That is probably the best advice.

Okay - we're the opposite kind of family -- a bunch of spotlight hogs (except for one, so I understand the shyness thing too) -- so how do we improve our chances of getting picked?

{{{I know, we can come with those of you who are shy and jump in front of you if the camera heads your way!!! You know - to protect you!}}} ***Meant with all due respect***
