How does one become a monorail operator? Is there a special school or is it like only in disney type of thing. Are there any monorail operators out there?

I'm not absolutely sure but Disney must train its monorail operators from scratch, because there are very few monorails in the U.S.

If there is any parallel with ordinary rail transit systems, there is one class of operators who do the passenger runs, and a second class of operators who throw switches and move the trains to and from the car barn. I would guess that running the monorail is quite easy.

Many of the rides look easy to operate, too, with just a few push buttons. I think Cinderella's Carousel needs only one button push to start it and it automatically times out the ride and stops.

A job in which all you do is push one button is boring.

On another thread is a comment about lackadaisical CM's, one example was the person who opened the gate every time a monorail train pulled into the station. Actually that job is a lot more than opening the gate, the CM is supposed to look out as best as possible for pickpockets and other crime activity, and just his/her presence has some crime deterrent.

The monorail drivers do more than drive. They switch off loading/unloading, assisting guests, and driving. Disney does do the training from scratch.

Don't forget the most important qualification skill of all...people skills!
Not only do the monorail operators have to do their job in driving the train, but they are usually travelling with four guests in the driver's compartment. So they have to maintain that "Disney attitude" and be social with the guests as well. I've noticed that some are better at it than others...we've had everything from drivers who sit there in stony silence to one who must have given the kids up front free rein with the recorded annoucements...we weren't up front, but you could definitely tell from listening to the ongoing partial and out of sequence announcements in the train!
