Monorail system

Is there any reason why Disney does not update their monorail system to include MGM, Animal Kingdom, and Downtown Disney from the (TTC)? The cost may be significant - however the cost could be offset by reducing the number of buses needed!

Looks like the cost for the Monorail is at least $25 million per mile. The Mark VI being constructed in Las Vegas is $68 million per mile.

But this is DISNEY!!! Who thought nothing of spending BILLIONS of dollars on a starting a cruise line.

MGM and DDis maybe (at most) a mile from EPCOT, AK maybe 2 or 3 miles from EPCOT....

Rumor is that there is negotiations going on with Eisner to get it extended. So far the only hold up is getting him to give back a lot of the money he got in bonuses.

1. Walt Disney was a dyed in the wool train buff but alas is no longer with us. Michael Eisner is not.

2. If the monorails went everywhere they would no longer be a novelty, or attraction, in themselves.

3. Except where there is lots of traffic congestion, the buses actually give a good quick ride.

This is true, however there was a potential for substantial profit with the cruise line. On the other hand spending billions on extending the monorail, wouldn't really be a profit generating expense. I agree it would be really nice, there were even plans at one point to extend the monorail to the DTD area.

Disney probably spent less the one billion dollars starting Disney Cruise Line. And, since then, Disney has been unwilling to invest in expanding the cruise ship fleet (although plans have been drawn up).

The cruise line generates substantial revenue.

The monorail system is an expense. The only economic justification can come from slightly higher rates that can be charged to "monorail resort" guests and from any operating expense savings in comparison to buses (which require more labor).

Yes, I too would really like to see the monorail system expanded. But I'm not holding my breath.
