I understand that the Monorail can bring you from Downtown Disney district into Tomorrowland. My quesiton is when do they check you for your park tickets to gain access to the Monorail. Meaning, if you wanted to get on the monorail at DTD and just take a ride.....can you?

No, you need valid entry media to ride the monorail....
regardless of where you board.
You would need to show your valid ticket for the day at the DTD station to board.

It's different from FL in that in FL the Monorail is used as transportation. At DLR, the Monorail is simply a ride, just like any other ride in the parks. So of course, you'd need a ticket as there are no free rides at DLR (other than the parking lot tram!)

Actually when I was a teenager, believe it or not, they use to allow people to buy a ticket to ride in the back cone of the monorail. It was like around $2 or something like that. I remember doing that with my aunt and a few cousins. We paid for the ride but it was frustrating as hell when you are 14 years old you stop in the park but then cant get out lol. I think it was only offered for a few years and this was back in the 80s!
