Monorail Incident and New Train Color Rumor
by John Frost

I received an email report on an incident on the EPCOT monorail line last weekend (OP's remark: This would be 3/20 or 21). No one was reported injured, but it certainly sounds like some hair-raising moments.

My sister and I were riding the monorail with my two nieces, who were on a stroller. It was around 9pm when on a turn, the monorail was leaning to the left side. It was so bad that the stroller went right to the door, even with the breaks on. Then it stopped for about 10-15 min. The stop was not sudden, it made a turn and started leaning towards the left side, it must have been at least 20 degrees of inclination, as it stopped. It was pretty obvious something serious was happening.

They did not say anything about what was happening. They just put the general “delay” message and said that it was going out of service after we get to the station. Then it started moving really slow and on another turn it leaned to the right side, and it stopped for a few minutes. Until we reached the station.

The monorail was heading toward the TTC from EPCOT and my sources say this is consistent with reports of an axle or suspension unit breaking on the monorail train. A very rare occurrence.

In related news, the same source says that a new Monorail color will soon hit the track. Monorail Maroon is the rebuilt monorail that includes the repaired nose and tail cones from the July accident. Supposedly there will also be an enhanced computer system for the train’s pilot.

In court papers, Disney has denied responsibility in that fatal July accident. But the way I read the story, Disney isn’t denying that things went wrong, just that they shouldn’t be held responsible for the actions of their employees. Um, I think someone slept through business 101. Hopefully they’ll reach a settlement with the cast member’s family. That’s the right thing to do.

Finally, one more interesting detail about new safety procedures for the monorail system. If a resort line train misses the station in the Contemporary and has to back up, it first has to wait for an express line monorail to come through the station and clear the track for the resort line train to reverse into the station. It’s good that visual confirmation is being used here, but couldn’t they just send a hotel manager out onto the observation deck with a radio to give the all-clear? What happens if the express line is down and a resort train misses the station?

OP: Here is one reader's comment about the article:

For a while last week, it was either monday or tuesday, i can’t remember, but the express monorail was down temporarily while the ferry boats were docked because winds were above 30mph so EVERYONE was being shuttled by the resort monorail. We luckily missed it, but heard some stories from some angry polynesian resort guests who couldn’t get on the packed trains. It was only temporary, but still crazy. Personally I love the whole experience of the ferry and monorail trip to the parks from the parking, but something seriously has to be done about the reliability issues plaguing the system. There were at least 3 separate instances of monorail issues the days we were at MK last week and we were only there for 1 full day and 2 partial days.

The monorails are getting old and Disney needs to make a decision on what to do about them in the near future, either they need to replace them or look for another form of transportation (I think ultimately replacing will be the choice).

I am sorry, but there is something VERY wrong about them refurbing the crushed Pilot Cabins. I don't care how new the guts of the cabin are, the fact is that a young man died in one of them and it should have been destroyed instead of rehabed. It's just creepy and wrong. :sad2:

^Yeah, I agree. Rebuilding the crashed ends of the trains into a new monorail seems really iffy.

I agree. I love the monorails as much as anyone, and would hate to see them go, but safety has to come first. If the company doesn't want to cough up the money it would take to completely redo the system, then they should just do away with them and come up with something else.

I just think it's disrespectful. Someone lost their life in that cabin, it's sort of like hollowed ground. It shouldn't have been put back on those tracks.

Rail vehicles are routinely rebuilt and returned to service after severe, even fatal, wrecks. I understand what you're saying, but this isn't at all unusual.

I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing!

that may be true, but other rail vehicles arent so clearly identifiable afterwards.

Regular WDW visitors and all the CMs will know full well every time they see that monorail that someone died on it. I especially feel bad for the future pilots of that monorail knowing they've got to drive it from that exact same spot :(

I can understand the emotion, but without sounding too cold, life goes on. If we all stopped everything we did, didn't go anywhere where some died, we'd live a very localized and confined life.

The sad part is if god forbid that discontinue using monorails they will certainly not spend the money required to do away with all of the reminders of them. They won't take the track down nor probably wouldn't remodel the resorts. We would then be constantly reminded during every visit about another part of the Disney magic that was taken away.

I like the color maroon but i dont think id be able to ride in a train knowing that it was part of the reason a life was lost... i just wouldnt be able to get over that fact.... i think disney is better off making a whole new train

The problem is they can't. The manufacturer doesn't make these trains anymore and in order to upgrade, I was told they would require an entirely new power structure.

I have to agree with one of the PP...life goes on. A CM was killed while working on the General Joe Potter, but the Ferry continues to operate to this day. No doubt, it will be eerie to ride the new train, but it is what it is. It's sad, but the reality is we need 12 trains running and this is the only way to do it.

the amount disney would be paying im pretty sure the manufacturer would come up with a solution!

We sure don't want the same monorails that DL got recently..... while beautiful (I have ridden them, they are esp. nice after dark) they have NO A/C!!!

I agree that this is a common type of thing, and I am fine with re-using the train parts..... people live in houses where other died, drive cars that were involved in fatal accidents, etc. But when I see monorail teal, and now maroon, I will remember the young CM who died way too soon.

A Monorail Cast Member will take a Radio and Hand Pack and visually verify from the rear the line is clear from certain things. Once the all clear has been given the train can then back up.The cast member is able to drop power stopping everything within a moment should conditions change.

First off, Bombardier, the manufacturer of the Mark VI Monorails, would gladly manufacture a new train if Disney asked them too. But come on people, use some common sense here. Why would Disney pay nearly $4,000,000 for a new Monorail when they have the resources to build another one themselves for about $50,000?

surely it cost more than $50,000? that wouldnt even cover the labour would it? plus we're talking about using the fairly badly damaged two trains which must have needed quite a lot of new parts?:confused3

I have no idea what monorail parts sell for on eBay but I do know it cost $250,000 for a CM restroom at Animal Kingdom
