I am still new, no flaming please. How come the monorails
dont go everywhere? Or being expanded every year? or is this wishfull thinking.
:rolleyes1

high speed moving escalator sidewalks would be nice,
or ........ :teeth: I'll stop now.....

Don't worry no flames :thumbsup2

Unfortunately the cost is staggering (i'm sure someone will have the exact totals) It would be great though would'nt it.

Yes, as this issue is addressed time and time again on the boards, it all comes down to the $$$$...and believe me I'd be one of the happiest DIS guests to see the air polluting/global warming "motor coaches" replaced with monorails to EVERYWHERE!! Unfortunately we would never afford to be able to stay on site if this were to ever happen, they'd have to charge thousands a night to cover the costs!! ;)

I am no expert or monorail "fanboys" but I did read somewhere that it would be around $1 million from post to post. I don't know if that is true, but I am sure I saw it on these boards.

More like $1 million or two per MILE (on WDW property), but still, very expensive.
The biggest problem is that in order to make them convenient, they'd need to go to all RESORTS as well as all theme-parks.

That would be a lot of trains, and some major "TTC"-type stations at each park. Imagine the number of platforms (and area) needed for all of those rails (just the BUS areas are very large... and quite congested at certain times of the day.

AND, how many trains per "run" would be required so that you would not have to wait a half-hour or more between pick-ups.

I believe this is more accurrate. I've spoken to some pretty reliable Cast Members (not monorail drivers) and they told me it would cost $1 Billion dollars just to expand the monorail from the TTC to AK and MGM. That cost doesn't even include the expansion going to any of the other resorts.

Take it for what it's worth, but that's what I was told.

Actually I was just down at Disney for work last week and this question came up. The answer that was given was that there are just too many people staying on site at the resorts and where would they put everyone? We were also told that there would be tons of delays because you have just one major area at each place for the monorail to stop and allow people off and on.
That is what we were told anyways. It could be the money too though.

Actually...as much as they say a monorail expansion will never happen...

When we signed our contract for DVC, the contract specifically stated that they will have the right to expand the monorail to DTD near SSR.

Now I know this is not a promise, but they must be thinking about it or they would not have placed it in the contract.

The $1 Million post-to-post figure comes from how much it would cost to go to and from Orlando International Airport.
It would cost so much because of "right-of-way" to put posts on other people's property.

I'm sure that figure has been "confused and intermingled" with how much it would cost "in GENERAL" but it, of course would not be anywhere near that much on-property.
Just consider what's involved (pre-fab rail-sections and steel posts "planted" in the ground... not exactly state-of-the-art high-tech.

It would be MUCH less materials and work than building a 4-lane highway/roadway (something WDW DOES often construct).

In the late 90's a number of Disney Imagineers were spending a lot of time at my University to study our PRT (personal rapid transit) which is a mini-monorail type system that connect the main campus, Evansdale campus, Medical complex and downtown. They, at the time, were considering something like this to connect the hotels and parks but I'm guessing it was either too expensive or they'd just need too many tracks that would clutter up and look bad. Not sure why exactly why they opted out - but those were my guesses.

If you want to see the PRT and what could have been at Disney (hey, for all we know it could still be an option one day):
http://www.arc.wvu.edu/transportation/PRT.html

Also if hey increased the amount of hotels reached then it would seriously lower the value charged in the current monorail hotels. So it makes it that more cost uneffective to Disney.

One of the WDW bus drivers told us last December that the cost would be about $1 million per mile. "You know what we call that?" she asked. "Job security!"

I have been told , while on the steam train tour, that the expense is not in what you can see, but what you cant. Because of the florida soil, they have to go down extra deep with the posts.

sorry to bring an old thread back, if it were to be expanded lets say to mgm. I'll say it be about a safe 4 mile round trip from epcot station. +4 million.

new station at wdw swan and dolphin or boardwalk.
+ 2 million.

new station at mgm + 2 million.

6 new mark iv trains, + 5 million each?

total is about ,...lets round up to 40 million.

cheap... no
out of disneys financial grasp.... no

didnt expedition everest cost 100 million?

btw i dont think it would take much away from
Contemp, GF, Poly... because it would not be a direct monorail to MK. they would have to get off. go down the ramp and back up. and again a TTC.

just my thoughts.

Think about how many people there are in the parks.. and EVERY SINGLE one of them taking a monorail somewhere.. you'd be backed up for hours trying to get it somewhere. The capacity of MK is 80,000 I believe.. imagine at the end of the night on sayyy... New Years.. 80,000 people trying to get out of a park on 4 monorails and a ferry. They have allll of the buses for a reason and it perserves the original WDW that was first created.

There is a reason that Poly, Contemp, and Floridian are so expensive to stay at :)

and i'm not being mean.. i'm just saying if that happened... thennnn. yeah.

I believe the cost is a major consideration but also the flexibilty of the buses is a major advantage, they can be brought online and schedules changed at short notice and can go to places not on a normal route is needed. Each bus also has its own power a major expansion in the monorail would also need an upgrading of the power nextwork for supply.
