So my teacher gives us this assignment.
It's to write our own monologue a whole page (front and back) and it's due tomorrow.

I sorta kinda don't even know what a monologue is.
She read examples, but it's like. Confusing.

Anyone like to explain/help?

Thanks.

1.a form of dramatic entertainment, comedic solo, or the like by a single speaker: a comedian's monologue. 2.a prolonged talk or discourse by a single speaker, esp. one dominating or monopolizing a conversation. 3.any composition, as a poem, in which a single person speaks alone. 4.a part of a drama in which a single actor speaks alone; soliloquy.

That is Dictionary.com's definiton.

It is basically when one person talks for awhile.

i though a monologue was about yourself. where you just talk and talk and talk.

anyone in your class you could talk to?

a monologue is when a character is speaking directly to the audience. think stand up comedian.

Yeah it's often what the actor or actress is thinking.
It's sort of like thinking out loud about a certain issue/topic/event.

So pick a topic and then write what you would say to yourself about it.
That's a monolouge.

An example:

Sally-"How amazing was that party?!"
Jane-"So much fun, I felt like I never stopped dancing. There was good food too."
Sally-"I know right? But did you see Katie's dress?! It was so...5-year-oldish."

Then it could go on and on between the characters. It's basically acting. (Sorry for the random caddy-ness of the topic haha).

Another example could be Dane Cook. Take his Koolaid act for example, he's talking to the audience about what scared him as a kid, and it's funny :)

Hope this made sense!

LOL, that's really weird, my teacher gave us a 1-page monologue assignment today, too!

XD

It has to be a monologue where we take on the identity of someone in World War 2... so it's like, we have to write a story describing their involvment in the war.

Wouldn't that be a dialogue?

A monologue is an extended, uninterrupted speech by a single person. The person may be speaking his or her thoughts aloud or directly addressing other persons, e.g. an audience, a character, or a reader.

Yeah, that's a dialogue.

Mono - one

i have always learned that a speech of one's thoughts directed to no one is a soliloquy. a monologue is directed to the audience. right?

I copied and pasted from Wikipedia, not the best. Sorry about that.
But yes, a soliloquy is directed to no one from what I learned.
I suppose it would be.

When someone's ranting on about what they feel, that's a soliloquy. If that's how you spell it :l

Like "to be or not to be," that's a soliloquy. That's not directed at anyone. A monologue is directed at SOMEONE, it could be anyone, it could be an audience, or a reader.

a soliloquy is when the speaker is alone on stage. an aside is when its spoken to no one in particular, but there are other characters on stage, and no one pays any attention to it.

Well, we just did a Romeo and Juliet soliloquy and it was like when Juliet was speaking to Romeo, without anyone interrupting. Yeah.

Thanks. I think I got the gist of it. Basically like thinking out loud... right?

If she tells me it's wrong, I'll just tell her that I didn't understand.

OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH.
Okay, I see what you mean.

Yeah, don't use my example ;)
