Moms with children in diapers - need advice!

I have three children and the first two, I only used Pampers, now the third has come along and Pampers has definitely changed something, or my daughter's bottom is far more sensitive than her brothers. Pampers are terrible for her. With so many moms talking of the problems, I tend to think it is the diaper and not the baby. Huggies will be fine. :thumbsup2

We mostly use Pampers Swaddlers with Dry Max. We haven't had an issue with the Dry Max...in fact, my daughter is almost 11 weeks old and hasn't had a rash yet of any kind. That being said, many people have been scared from using them due to the bad publicity right now.

I also had a package of Huggies Little Snugglers that we liked, but I can typically get a better bargain on the Pampers Swaddlers at Sam's Club without having to use coupons and run to multiple stores. Right now, Amazon.com has a bunch of different diapers and wipes for 30% off and free shipping (combination of coupon code and subscribe & save discount). Nothing beats having diapers delivered right to your front door! :thumbsup2

I also bought a bunch of CVS brand diapers when they were on 75% off clearance a few weeks ago. I bought them mostly in bigger sizes, since that was all they had left. I did have one package of size 1's though that we used already. They do work okay and didn't leak, but they're very stiff and papery. There's absolutely no way I would pay full price for them, but for 75% off I was happy.

I've heard good things about Target's Up & Up diapers, but I haven't bought them yet.

All kids have different body shapes, and a new mom will quickly find out which diaper works best. My new baby seems like she can wear just about anything with no problem. On the other hand, my son could only wear Pampers. He leaked terribly out of Huggies, and Luvs gave him a blistering rash.

If you're buying diapers as a gift, you might want to skip the newborn size and opt for size 1 (or even higher) instead. Many babies are so big when they're born that they only wear the newborn size for a week or two.

I'll answer! Newborns have to be changed a lot more often than older babies because of the risk of cord infection - so no, 80 is not too many. :)

My oldest would have blown through that in a week (and I do mean BLOWN at times :scared1:).

Agreed on the number of diapers needed! For the first 5-6 weeks, my daughter was changed about 10-12 times per day. She is almost 11 weeks old now, but I still change her at least 6 or 7 times a day.

ours was the same, 10-12 diapers a day in the beginning. WE used a few different brands in teh beginning. I liked the pampers that has teh cord notch, and also b/c our baby was on the small side for the first 2 weeks. But really, not any better than the huggies and WAY mor eexpensive depending on where you buy them.
Now we use Luvs (she is 20 months) because they are far less expensive than even the huggies, but we do use huggies overnights for overnight and also pull ups from time to time if we are staying home. (just started potty training)
I also received a Diaper cake for my shower and it was an awesome gift. My sister made it with 3 different sizes of diapers, all generic Wal-Mart brand. Although it wasn't our brand preference we were very happy for the diapers and used them all. I think you are changing so frequently that they really don't have time to leak (until the kid is a little older, say 3-6 months, but then the mess usually goes up their back! Horrible)
THe midwife told us to change DD in between sides while nursing in the middle of the night. She told us to do this because the baby was falling asleep after only a little and then would wake up hungry again too soon. THe idea was, change her in between to wake her up a little and then she would be ready to nurse on the other side. DD seriously wet EVER SINGLE NEW DIAPER before we got it on her. In one end, out the other! So each change used 2 diapers for a few nights until I ditched the whole plan and just tickled her feet to keep her awake. AH, memories. Otherwise good advice, it just didn't work for us, I guess.
ANyway, we saved the larger size off brand diapers later and kept some in the car in case we ran out. It was great to have any diaper. Hope your castle comes out ok!

I sounds like you will be taking the diapers out of the package to make the castle (of course I've never seen one so I could be wrong :goodvibes).

If you are taking them out of the package, save the plastic bags that they come in. This way you will have the manufacturers info on the package if the mom has a problem with the diapers (for example tabs coming off in your hand when you go to put the diaper on the baby...it happens). I called a number of times for various problems with diapers over the years. The manufacturers typically sent out a replacement coupon. I only did this for REAL problems, not just to get free diapers!

What mom winds up preferring is what will fit the baby best. I think the variety is fine.
My kids are all out of diapers, but my son could only fit in Pampers--nothing else fit him right and would leak all over. My older daughter fit best into Luvs. My little one wound up in Target brand most of the time, with Huggies when I could get them cheaper than the store brand.

I will be COMPLETELY honest. If you change your child like you should, (meaning after he wets/poops, and I don't mean wetting a few times and then changing) then ANY diaper will do. The absorbancy becomes an issue when a child wets them more than once before changing. Now as a mother I am very guilty of letting my daughter wet more than once (they are expensive and sometimes you are just busy!). But thats the honest truth. I myself always prefered huggies, because the pampers were brick shaped (like the hilarious commercial!) and the huggies just fit her better. But when she turned 18 months I started putting her in training pants and used the generic white cloud brand and they worked exactly like the huggies pullups!!

I disagree. I have 5 kids and while of course you should change your child's diaper often- sometimes things come out so fast and so much at once that the diaper simply does not absorb it. Then you have a super leak.

I also hate to be the downer here but I would not make the castle. I personally don't like those diaper cake things. The reason is that I hate the idea of someone touching etc. all the diapers. It seems gross to me and I probably would not use the diapers. I know some people love them but I also know plenty of people like me that don't. I would hate to see you waste your money on something that the mother may not use.

Oh yea- I used to love Pampers but they have changed them so much that I no longer use them. I use 7th generation or Nature's Best. They have no chlorine etc. (Pampers were giving my child a rash) and they absorb better. They are also better for the environment and they are cheaper which are added bonuses.

I use any diaper that is on sale and I have a coupon for. I've used Pampers (never used the Dry Max, won't chance it), Huggies, Luvs, generics from Walmart, Rite Aid, and Walgreens with no problems, and my son has very sensitive skin. My son used to leak through Huggies when he was a newborn, but just went through a pack of 60 something and not one leaked. And I did get a diaper cake for my shower and was excited and used every diaper! I can usually get the best deals at places like Walgreens, Rite Aid, and CVS. If you watch for sales and cut coupons, you can get a pack for around $5.

I won't mess with you on this thread like on the taco lunch one :lmao:

I agree. Absorbency isn't all that matters. My oldest could explode any brand of diaper you put on her and I changed her at least a dozen times a day when she was tiny. :sad2: Thankfully she outgrew that :thumbsup2.

I gave my SIL diapers for her shower and I didn't do anything fancy with them. I was able to get her a lot of packages with sales. She had twins so she needed a lot.

I was given a package of huggies and lots of cartons of pampers for my baby shower with DD6. In the hospital they also used pampers and they worked great and my DD had the worst most disgusting diapers (right up until she potty trained). When we came home from the hospital I used the huggies and after 2 days had to give the rest of them away. My DD just blew right through them and would have yuckiness EVERYWHERE. Used the pampers I had and while the diapers were still awful at least they contained it 98% of the time. It took me a couple months before I had to buy diapers and I purchased luvs, and a few generic brands (trying to save some money) and none of them worked for her so I had to go back to pampers. I also love their wipes.
When I had my second DD almost 2 years ago I just stuck with the pampers and have had no problems with them at all. She is in the size 3, but I don't think they are the type people have been complaining about as I buy them at BJ's in a huge carton to save money.

we only use huggies! I find they fit so much better, and I don't like the pampers brand at all. Never have. I've never liked their tabs, either.

You really never know what will work for a particular child until that child is here, so I'd just go with one of the major brands (Pampers, Huggies, Luvs) and hope for the best. I have three kids; one leaked through everything but Luvs overnight, one got rashes from Luvs and store brands and did best with Huggies, and the current little one is fine in pretty much anything. I've had uniformly bad luck with store brands so I steer clear of those now, but any preference beyond that has been specific to the child.

I usually use whatever I can get the cheapest on sale with coupons honestly. Sometimes that is Luvs but lately it has been Target brand Up diapers. They are almost always cheaper than any other brand even with sales and coupons and they work just as well as the name brands. The only issues Ive seen is that they have blue and green circles which could show through light colored clothing, if thatd matter to you and they are more "brick shaped" so we can actually do a size smaller but that is good for me because the smaller size has a higher quantity for the same price!

Have fun and Im sure a new mother will appreciate any diapers they receive and dont have to purchase atleast I did! With my youngest b/n the shower and Christmas I was set for atleast 6 months! Besides the best thing about receiving different kinds at the shower is you get to test what will and wont work for your child without having to buy each brand yourself.

I honestly would go with several brands just to make sure. That way the new parent could decide in the future which brand they like best. Especially if their baby has sensitive skin.

We are a pampers family during daytime and huggies during nightime (overnite). Huggies daytime didn't work as well for us. It'll work in a pinch but not our favorite. We trield almost all brands, 7th gen, earth's best, luvs, huggies and pampers. None worked as well as pampers for us. Luvs was the worst of the lot for material, 7th gen and EB just didn't fit right. I didn't try store brand at all. After reading some reviews on certain store brands I figure I should just stick with what we know works well already.

80pcs is nothing in terms of usage... phew the amt of diapers we used the first 3 months were astounding.

I've never had to make any diaper castle thingy but if I do especially for a new mom I'd stick in some burp cloths in there too. If you can make it yourself (sewing) you can make those for dirt cheap. And for new parents... you might need those almost as often as you need diapers... :), luckily those can be laundered tho hehe.

I honestly think that any first time mother will be thankful for any diapers that you buy. I'm a second time mother to be, and I would be grateful for anything that was given to me. Free is free, and will be appreciated!

If I were in the same position as you, I would avoid the Pampers with the Dry Max, only to be cautious. I do know people personally who have dealt with the reactions to the diapers, and even if the chance is slim, I would try my best to avoid the possibility!

Good luck! I hope you will share your pattern for the diaper castle (if you have a link) - Those are sooo cute!

I am a new mom and my DD uses Pampers or Luvs right now. She is in size1. On my side of the family Huggies have always been a problem for allegric reactions. I did try both reg and the new free and natural huggies on my DD and after only 30 minutes and her wetting once she was fire red... so I second if you make it get a bunch of different brands to try. Luckily for me both the huggies I tried were samples so I didnt have to get rid of a whole pack of diapers.

Another thing is that I will say the mom may not even use it just because she doesnt want to take it apart because its so cute... I know a few moms that didnt for that reason.

Its been a long time since diapers, but we were a Huggies family. Both girls fit in Huggies better than Pampers. I don't know if it was because they were little Michelin babies, or what, but Pampers just didn't fit! I think each family will have their preferences and if this is their first child they won't know what works until they have tried them all. I try to give first time parents a small package of every kind of diaper out there. That way they can find the best fit/feel/performance for their baby. If its a second or subsequent baby I find out what they used before and get them that. DD2 never had a Pampers or Luvs diaper on her bottom except at Grandmas (who insisted on those brands :confused3 and refused to use the diapers I would send with them while visiting). She'd send boxes of them home with us and we'd donate them to the local women's shelter. One of many small p..... contests we have had over the years... :teacher:

But back to the point:rolleyes: Diapers are expensive no matter which ones you choose and parents always appreciate them as shower gifts! You nenver have enough.
