Hi disers!

I am hosting a baby shower this month and was planning on making a diaper castle. WOW - diapers are uber expensive!!! :scared1:

Anywho - another person helping with the shower said to get only pampers b/c they are the best. Well, i flagged down some people in walmart today (i got so overwhelmed in the diaper section) and i guess some moms are veering away from pampers b.c some children were having some reaction to their dryfit technology.

soooo - i ended up getting the huggies pure and natural.

do you think this is going to be an issue with the mom to be? are huggies that much worse than pampers? or is that an opinion? they were close to the same price (of not equal)

It will only be an issue if the mom already had a child and she decided what she liked. The Pampers issue is real. There was an issue with some kids having a bad reaction in the diapers. Personally, I was a Pampers cruisers kind of guy. If she doesn't know one from the other, she should be thankful for any diaper. She could even use the different varieties as a test to see what she likes the best. You could say it is akin to asking if coke or pepsi is better when they had never tasted either.

Back in the day Huggies were my favorite. Now that I have a new grandson, I am pleased to say they are just as good as they used to be. I have purchased the pure & natural for him too ( I hope you had the $2.50 coupons that have been on coupon websites the past couple of weeks). The Pamper thing was some parents felt the striping put in to tell if the baby was wet irritated the baby's skin - but there hasn't been any scientific proof that this was a problem. They have used those on the baby too with no problem. My DD hasn't purchased any Walmart/ Sam's club diapers yet - but we bought them some Costco Kirkland brand and she was really pleased - said one of her friends was a big fan of the Costco diapers too.

check out babycheapskate.com for the weekly diaper deals.

I have a 4 month old and use anything. You may want to get a variety of sizes. Many babies grow out of newborn size pretty quickly. We spent about 1.5 months in size 1 and are now in size 2.

Hope this helps.

I'll 2nd what marius97 said. If the mom has a preference, then she might mind. If she doesn't know any different, then she probably won't care. We started out with the Papers Swaddlers since they were the only ones that fit our son who was less than 5 lbs at birth. So even the birth weight can matter. Once he grew, we switched to Huggies since we could get them at Costco for less.

my daughter wears both huggies and pampers..

i have read about the pampers rash too.. but it happens in a small number of children. if it was a real concern pampers probably would have recalled them..

it really depends on the child. some cant wear huggies for whatever reason.
some leak out of pampers.

its really hard to say.

thanks for the feedback.

marius - good analogy with the coke and pepsi.

here757 and swimalie - this is her first child so i do feel a little better.

and ahhh midwestdee - i did NOT see the coupon for the diapers. but i do have the receipt and may just return them (they are still in the wal mart bag) if i can save a dollar or two.

karinbelle - i bought 80 of the size 1's. is that too many? i am going to babycheapskate.com now.

thanks disers!

DGS is 11 months old and he wears Pampers and Huggies. DD19 wore Huggies, DS20 wore Luvs, and neither wore Pampers back in the day. ;) That being said, there is also the word that the Jeans Huggies are causing issues too but DGS has had no problems with the Pampers or the Jeans Huggies so we keep buying whichever I can get the cheapest at CVS and Walgreens. :rolleyes1 We even tried the CVS brand and it was the only brand we didn't really care about.

Not that you asked but with wipes, that's a different story... the hard pkgs of Pampers are difficult to use but the soft packs of Pampers and all the Huggies wipes are easy to use.

Huggies seem to be better or my youngest is just rounder. Huggies leaked really bad with my oldest since he was really thin. But I use them a lot with my youngest. Pampers were good, never had the problems others complained about.

I'll answer! Newborns have to be changed a lot more often than older babies because of the risk of cord infection - so no, 80 is not too many. :)

i sooo missed the pampers sale and ecb at cvs by one day!! arrrgghh!

Try diapers.com. They usually have a good deal if you are buying for the first time. We like huggies $38 at Sam's but we also use the Walmart brand and not had any problems.

I have bad skin problems and was worried the baby might too but she has been fine with everything.

Good Luck.

Diapers were my favorite thing at my shower I didn't have to buy any for 9 months!

I was just happy to have so many diapers (a friend made a huge diaper cake)...though eventually I went to cloth, having lots of newborn and size 1 disposibles was awesome. No matter what brand she prefers, the baby may have a rash, leak, etc. So I wouldn't worry about it.

80 is about enough for a week or a day or two longer, especially with a newborn. :rotfl: Think changes every 2-3 hours and they go fast. With my DD9, we used mostly Huggies and then wised up with my DS2 and he uses BumGenius cloth diapers. As easy as disposables but much cheaper in the long run. For the rare occasion that he is at daycare and sometimes overnight, we use Luvs and have been really happy with them. Never a leak or blow-out like we had with Huggies. Really, your friend should be happy with anything you make for her, it is a gift after all.

I was a huge pampers swaddlers/cruisers fan with DS1...DD2 is on the way in a few weeks and the 3 friends I have with kids in diapers have all had issues with the new dry max pampers. I have managed to collect several of the old school swaddlers without dry max as well as huggies pure and natural, little snugglers, and pampers sensitive (they dont have dry max until size 3) for the next few months! I hope that by the time DD2 is ready for size 3 that there is some clear answer on where to go forward!

Many moms do not know about the pampers issue despite it making the news several times....i think that the one thing thats so challenging about it is that your child could have gone through 2 packs of dry max dipes and its not until the 3rd pack that a reaction occurs...nothing like a little gamble!

diapers are such a "personal preference" type thing! i think she'll be happy w/ whatever you chose! w/ my 1st DS i only did cloth diapers - ever! w/ my DD she started out in the NICU, so she used disposables, then when she came home i used cloth, then we went to disney when she was in infant and there was NO WAY i was going to be washing cloth dipes @ disney, lol.... and she stayed in sposies until she potty learned! i liked to buy all of them to find out my "favorite" - which ended up being huggies in the white box (not the red, lol).... now w/ my 3rd child, he's never been in cloth once & i don't forsee that ever happening, LOL.... sill a white box huggies lover :)

my point.... LOL - she will be happy w/ anything especially since this is her first. she doesn't have a "favorite" yet!

now i have to google a diaper castle...... ;)

I LOVE Pampers Baby Dry. I've only heard that the Dry Max are the ones that are causing the problems but I've been a Pampers snob since DS was 6 months old (we were using Huggies beforehand but kept having blowouts).
