Moms to Be Part 3

Where do you live? The maternity center is in NE Miami - far north from me, but worth it. It is not in the nicest area of Miami, but it isn't the ghetto either.

Here is the website: http://www.miamimaternitycenter.net/

They take most forms of insurance, and for people who have to pay OOP it costs $3600. My insurance covers most everything - I just have to pay $500, and they did a payment plan so I pay like 75 a month. I think you should check it out - definitely meet Sharri, she is amazing. They do tours of the place. If you need to go to the hospital there is an OB they work with, so they will still be there with you. They monitor you a bit more because you have to be ay 100% to be able to have the baby there - any indication otherwise you go to the hospital. I still have some apprehensions about not being at a hospital but Sharri has delivered over 11,000 babies and I know the classes will help to ease my concerns. Plus the hospital is only three miles away. Anyhow, the classes will help and they are free :)

There are four midwives working there, and loads of students. Sharri, the head midwife, actually LIVES at the Birth Center. Anyhow, I love it there, especially the treatment you get - I am VERY impressed. They take lots of time wit you at the visits. I came in a few times without an appointment just to hear the baby's heartbeat and they were totally cool about it. There are a few of the moms =-to-be that even hang out there, lol. They are all sweet. The appointments sometimes run a little bit behind (but not as bad as my regular doctor, lol), but once you get in there they take all the time you need with them, so it is all worth it to me. Let me know if you have any other questions!

OH - and I love to go on this art of the site to see the new babies born each week: http://www.miamimaternitycenter.net/component/option,com_events/Itemid,7/

Thanks so much for all the information. We live in West Pembroke Pines but hubby said it doesn't look too far from us because we can take 95. When I look at my birth plan it fits in with the birthing centers theories (I don't want anyone touching him and taking him away from me etc.) so it might be easier to go somewhere where they believe the same things and not just 'fight' with nurses about what I want. I am paranoid about being told how to have my baby and what to do with him when it is my body and my baby. I will be having a long talk with Robert about it and we will go check out the center. At the very least I want to attend the classes and send him to the daddy boot camp - how cute!!

Thanks again.

Wow, he is one big boy. I can't imagine if they had let you go to full term! I am worried that I will have a big one too!

He's so cute. It seems like you are feeling well now so that is great!

Oh, and if you are interested in breastfeeding, your milk doesn't come in for a few days, it could take up to 10 days but if you don't feed baby the colostrum and get him nursing then I'm not sure if it will. Just an FYI for you, not trying to push breastfeeding or anything :goodvibes

I didn't read Maggie's link but... I think every hospital has very, very different policies. When I asked when I should/could get mine (still wasn't sure yet I wanted it, until the gallbladder pain hit) she told me whenever I wanted up to 8cm. After that, they don't let you get one because there really isn't a point.
So I got mine at 4cm.. (given I had gallbladder pain, I jumped the gun a bit) but... I think it also depends on how your body responds to pain meds. Have you been put under before? Taken vicodin/percocet/ anything narcotic like that? How does it affect you? All things to think about-- and listen to your body. If it feels like they're getting stronger, even a little bit, ASK YOUR NURSE! Don't wait, like I did, thinking it was normal.. It's not a bad thing to go ahead and have them get the anesthesiologist in there to take a look at things! :thumbsup2

That's my problem, I've never been on any of those drugs before. I know there are two I will stay away from, because they make my mom really sick, so it's better not to chance it. Darvacet & percocet I think?

Mom had no problems with her epi's. I need to stop thinking about this right now! lol

Most people that go there seem to be from Broward County. . . I'm the weirdo that lives near the Miami Metro Zoo and goes all the way up there, lol! We take 95 up, and the BC is close to the exit - park in the back though, it is easier that way.

Definitely make an appointment (I called on a Thursday and made mine for the following Monday) to get a tour and make sure Shari will be on that day and meet her - she sat with us for over an hour before we were clients and discussed all of our concerns and such with us, she is really great.

There are two main reasons I decided to go to the MMC before I even got pregnant. #1 is that I am overweight and in FL the c-section rate is about 80% for overweight women, women at their normal weights are not that much lower - FL is crazy in terms of c-section rates. I don't have a problem having one if it is medically needed - but I don't want it to be the first course of action just because you get paid more or it fits your schedule better. . . . #2 is that I am TOTALLY traumatized after seeing my cousin have her baby at South Miami in December (it is now owned by Baptist, and located right of US1 and Sunset Dr.). Anyhow - they took the baby from her for FOUR hours and the baby SCREAMED the whole time she was away from her mom - no one touched her or held her or anything the whole time she was in the nursery except when doing on of their checks. The child was bright red and I stood at the window practically crying the whole four hours - I DO NOT want that - I never want that baby to leave my sight, I don't want people to force me to supplement with formula, etc. Like you said, it is my body and my baby! I think there is a birthing center attached to a hospital in Broward. . . or close to one. . . but Shari is the Midwifery Queen!

OH YEA - I forgot to mention Daddy Boot Camp - Dennis went two weeks ago (they say the sooner the better) - anyhow he came home a different man - so well informed!! It was incredible - he now knows how to swaddle and so many things he never knew, I was impressed. . . I'm Shari's #1 fan, lol!!

Post here or PM me if you have any other questions!

So my shower is tomorrow. This is the one that SIL is throwing. I feel kind of weird about it, because her boyfriends grandma passed away on Monday. The shower is at his brother's house (he is my SIL's best friend's DH) and of course, he'll be there too. They already had the funeral and everything, but it's just bad timing! I know i wouldn't want a bunch of near strangers at my house a few days after something like that!

I can't wait to fill Lily's dressers up with clothes and stuff! lol Right now they are really empty! I did take pictures, but I don't think they came out all that well...the room is so small and the color just doesn't show well with pics...but I will post! DH is still planning to do a mural above the crib, so hopefully that works out. He's an awesome artist, but the cartoony stuff isn't always his strength--though his sketches look really great. And I got vinyl lettering that says "All you need is Faith, Trust and a little bit of Pixie Dust." :teeth:

Adi, you make me want to move down there for the next few months! lol I wish we had a place like that nearby...although it's a bit late now!

Were you replying to me? Sorry if not... I'll respond anyway..

OB checked my chest today--nothing going on. She agreed that milk is not going to come in (this is day 2 after all)... which I figured because they cut so much out. They warned me I might not be able to breastfeed... I don't have lumps or anything in there. I think they're dead.

I know breastfeeding is better but I'm a D with 4.5lbs out.. and at 18 breast feeding wasn't on the top of my priority list! Then again I didn't anticipate meeting my hubby and having a baby by 22 either... ;)

Hmm.. I can see where that would be hard then. I'm allergic to percocet, I think that one causes a lot of issues for sure!

Just listen to your body-- best advice I can give. And if you've got to turn off the TV, slap your hubby to tell him to shut up and let you concentrate for a minute.. do it. I had to. Because there is so much to distract you and sometimes the quiet helps! :rotfl:

Yipee it is Friday!!! Lets hope we all have a great weekend:goodvibes

Harleyquinn- Hope your shower is wonderful!

Piecey- I will be seeing you at the new Moms thread in 3 weeks.

Hi everyone!

Piecey, it seems you went through quite an ordeal! I'm so thankful that everything worked out alright!

Harleyquin, have fun at your shower!

Thanks to whoever posted the Babies R Us link, I forgot who it was!

Question: DH and I are thinking about taking a trip to Disney pretty last minute, basically the first week of July as an official "babymoon" At that time I will be right about 6 months along. Are we completely insane? Any thoughts?

Hi all, just a quick check-in...

Sarah, enjoy your shower. Give us all the details after!!!

Patsy, see you on the new moms thread in around three weeks.

Now it is my turn to be close to the top of the list...I think I am number three now.

Whoa! I remember you welcoming me to this list-wasn't it about 3 weeks ago? I am feeling HUGE and my due date is still nowhere in sight. Though I am washing baby clothes and getting everything together pretty busily.

I am 6.5 months pregnant right now and Dh has asked me TWICE in the last two days if he could take me to disney. LOL. I could definitely handle disney right now... but for me it doesn't sound like a ton of fun considering you are so restricted when pregnant (can't ride all the rides, gotta go pee 400 times in a day, etc, etc). I told him we should pass this year (and next because our little boy will still be so young)... and do something else (im thinking beaching it out like the real bum i feel like). Anyway-- I definitely think its do'able at 6months if thats what you are wondering.

LOL - well it is great, but I don't think now is the time for you to be moving :)

I don't think you are insane. I went to WDW at 19W (so almost 4 months) and it wasn't too bad. I did have to drink and pee lots and couldn't ride everything, but still had a great time. there was lots of yummy food to have. . . I got two dole whips on the trip and spent a relaxing day at Typhoon Lagoon - did the wave pool )deeper out the waves aren't strong), the lazy river and snorkeled with the sharks/stingrays, etc. It was a nice time. We only did two days at the parks but did all 4 parks, and got in Wishes and Fantasmic. . . you have to do it at a different pace, but there is still lots of fun to be had!

Does anyone have a link to the new mom's thread?? I want to subscribe over there and lurk, even though October seems forever away, I want to be able to know what's going on with everyone jumping ship and be able to join in once my little one arrives :)

Piecey - I know you're heading out, but I had bad back labor with my daughter and that is more painful than regular labor by far. In my daughter's case, they said it was because her head wasn't positioned 100% correctly. She wasn't totally upside down, but her head was turned off center. It's supposedly even worse if they are totally turned (so head down, facing up) so maybe your little guy was like that?

Linzy - We went to DL when I was about 6 months pregnant with my son and it was a great trip. We had a 2yo at the time, so we weren't really blasting through the parks anyway. The heat would be the only annoying part, but just more of an excuse to take a break and get a nice cold drink or ice cream. We're going with this baby in November and I'll be I think 26 weeks, so I guess that's about 6 months, right? We're also going next week for 4 days and let me tell you, with the constant sick feeling I have right now, I'd much rather be 6 months along down there, then 6 weeks!

Adi - Your birthing center sounds great! My husband is a physician so no way would he want our kids delivered anywhere other than a hospital (that fear of the worst gets him), but with both kids we made our wishes very clear. Neither time did I have pitocin (though they pushed it like heck with my 1st! it actually got really annoying), they didn't do any of the feedings, etc. I was okay with them spending the first 4 hours in the nursery though. With my son, since I didn't have an epi or anything else, I sat in there with him for some of those 4 hours. Actually, since he was preterm, he had really bad jaundice so he had to be in the nursery 24/7 under the UV lights in an isolette, so I spent a lot of time just sitting in a chair in there, looking at him. I was fine with pacifier use so both kids got them in the nursery soon after birth. They also slept in the nursery at night, a hospital preference though you can opt out of that and room in if you prefer, but they brought them to my room to nurse every 2 hours. I have a huge, ridiculous fear of SIDS so I felt much better with them sleeping in the nursery. Once they came home, I seriously didn't sleep for about 2 weeks cause I kept fearing they'd stop breathing. And with my daughter, I was so irrational about it that I'd hold her in my arm while she slept. I was mildly better the 2nd time, but not much. Luckily my son was a noisy sleeper so that helped a lot.

Regarding the breastfeeding, having nursed 2 kids to 21 and 22 months, I can tell you that if you have to supplement with formula, you can still go on to nurse successfully so don't stress about it too much. I was all about no formula with my daughter, and then my milk didn't come in. She was born on a Thursday at 8.4 lbs and was a full pound less at her dr appt that Monday, which was less than they wanted her to weigh. So I had to supplement for 2 days and bring her back to be weighed. I went to a lactation consultant that day who said I might not produce much milk and gave me this supplemental nursing system (SNS), which was like a canteen that you fill with pumped milk and it flows through a tiny tube that you tape to your breast, so when the baby sucks it is still getting your breastmlk as well as the formula coming through the tube. My daughter hadn't slept since we left the hospital, just cried. I fed her through that thing and she passed out for 2 hours. I felt terrible that I had been starving her for several days!

Anyway, that SNS was a pain to say the least. Getting it set up, the baby latched on properly, cleaning it, etc. was maddening. So after maybe 2 days I was done with it and started pumping and mixing the pumped milk and formula since there was barely anything coming out when I pumped. I cried about how I couldn't make any milk, my kid was hungry, and she'd never want to breastfeed now that she was drinking only bottles. Then I got double mastitis and was in sooooo much pain, which was worse when I tried nursing. But now I was getting 4 oz of milk per side when I pumped, every 2 hours (seems the blocked ducts were my problem all along!), so I pumped exclusively and bottle fed my daughter for about 2 weeks before I was brave enough to try latching her on again. She never had any trouble and went back and forth between bottles and nursing without a hitch, and nursed till 21 months.

My son I didn't have supply issues at all, in fact I was so engorged in the hospital that I had to pump before I checked out. But because of his jaundice, I opted to supplement with formula as breastmilk can be a source of jaundice. His ped was totally fine with me nursing only, but I wanted to take him home and get his bili levels down so I decided to give him a formula bottle after he nursed. He too was totally okay with nursing and bottles and was very reluctant to finally wean at 22 months.

Anyway, enough of my ramble, just wanted to throw that out there as I know how I felt when I thought my breastfeeding chances were shot but it all turned out okay.

Nothing new going on here at the moment, just that the all day sick feeling has kicked in. I was more than satisfied with the general queasiness I had till yesterday, but now the bad stuff seems to be starting.

Yep- they said "****-eyed" actually which was another reason they gave that I wasn't dilating as quickly as 'normal' (realizing normal is a hard term to use in reference to labor)... so I'm sure that contributed.. :thumbsup2

I was just lurking on the New Mom's thread and saw that Rparm had her baby last Monday...so that moves me to number two position on the list!!
I know it seems like three weeks ago I joined this thread!!!:rotfl:

Hope everyone is feeling well....I am so tired and have not been up to much DISing. Keep you all posted on my status.

Valerie, thinking of you and those precious little ones.
