I have been an at-home mom for six years, but I'm getting myself geared up to go back to work p/t once my DD is in first grade.
What p/t jobs have you liked or not? Can you give me any tips? Thanks!

I substitute teach at my kids school. I taught before I had kids. Although there are the obvious behavior issues I love being able to choose when I work.

If I were not a certified teacher I think I would substitute for aide/assistant positions or try for a permanent part time aide/assistant at a school. It's great to have the same hours as the kids.

I work p/t in a billing dept of a hosp... love the work... just hate the ofc politics... Be prepared... In some places the jealousy some coworkers/managers feel for those who work p/t, can be very hard to deal with...

I would love to work at school, but thought you would need to have a background in education. I'll look into that. Thanks, disykat.
Mom2Em, thanks for your warning. I can understand people being jelous, but I can't imagine them letting you know about it! Workplaces can be very petty......looks like we have a few things in common, DD's named Emma or Emily, VWL (my favorite place!) and crying easily! I NEVER cried until I had my kids, now I even become weepy at sweet Disney World commercials!

Most of the times you don't need an education background for an aide position, etc...

As for part time jobs I loved, I just stopped one. It was part time at a college, I was an admin asst, and a receptionist for a college.

I loved the work, got benefits, and 401K. The peopole did get jealous of me though.. I would be leaving .. and they would say didn't you just get here... (I did work 2 hours/day/5 days a week)... I then gently reminded them that my paycheck reflected that... something like yes, I have part time hours, but I also have a part time paycheck...

Isn't that cool!! :) My DD is Emily, we love the Lodge and my weeping came with childbirth! I think that having Emily really made me stop and see the importance of everything... Being a mother is the best job but, boy, there is no part time status there! :)
You would be surprised how people act... It doesn't help that my current manager eggs them on because she is anti p/t, too... I get a whole lot of grief over my Disney trips and being p/t... Oh well! :) I just laugh about it as I sit at home on my days off!:p

I am a veterinary assistant, part time.

I love it. I love the work, I love my boss...well you know...I like him. He is the best veterinarian I have ever worked for...

The only problem with the job is the pets, have owners. Most owners are wonderful. Unfortunately, it's the horrible ones we remember.

I have three kids, DD 17, DS 8, and DS 5. My 5 year old will be in kindergarten next year. It should be interesting working around those hours.

I work part time, I have done it for the last 7 years, I work weekends when dh is home with the kids, I started doing it because we didn't want to put DD1 in daycare after a bad experience and then a year before she started kindergarten DD2 was born, so I continued to work part-time for the same reason. This year DD2 started kindergarten but they only go 1/2 day here and she goes in the afternoon so I can't compromise to anything. Next year I plan on getting a job with the school, either as a teacher's aide, administration or even cafeteria just so I can stay home on snow days with them and vacations, unfortunately we don't have relatives here , so all their care is mostly up to me while my dh works.
You have to do what you have to do!

I worked at the Disney Store one school year. They staffed by 4 hour shifts. So everyone was part time, except the managers. The were the only ones who recieved benifits were those hired as managers. There were 3 top manager changes while I worked there. That was hard. Each manager wanted things done differently. And the CM evening meetings were hard to get to,and they were manditory.

But it was fun to listen to Disney music everyday, and the reg. customers were great!!

And I recieved for Christmas from the company a pair of DL passes.

 Hi Lodge Lady!!! I just pmed you!

I have one part-time job that I work three mornings a week - it is at a fitness center in the child care center. My DD goes to work with me and she loves it there. I love the ladies I work with and the kids but the manager is difficult and some of the members as well so I will be ready to leave this job behind.

My other part-time job is sewing at home for a company that I love. I love the owner and the other people there. The owners has asked me if I can work in the office a few hours a day starting next fall which will be perfect since DD will be starting kindergarten.

I also work at the Dallas Apparel Market about 6 weekends a year and that is fun too because I am with ADULTS:)

I work part-time as a buyer for an engineering firm. I started off as fulltime and in the summer of 2000 they were going to lay someone in my department off so I volunteered to take the summer off. When it was time to go back, I negotiated part-time, about 25 hours a week. I drop the kids off at school and I go to work and when I leave work I pick them up. It has worked out really well except for the engineers that make snide remarks when I am leaving early. Of course, I remind them how our paychecks probably differ greatly!

I work about 30 hours a week. I work for the YMCA watching kids before and after school at the school. My hours are 6:30-9:30 a.m. and again 3:00-6:00 p.m. The days get a little long sometimes, but the job is so much fun! I get payed to sit around and play with a bunch of kids!

My 5 y/o comes with me in the afternoon so he gets plenty of playtime. My off hours during the day allow us to get a lot of work done at home and gives us plenty of time to go to our various lessons and field trips.

My teen takes advantage of the afternoon's quiet hours at home to read or work on "school" or personal projects.

If I have to work, then this is definately the job for me.

I'm a substitute teacher which is parttime even tho the past few years (as my boys get older) I do a lot more long term subbing. I have been doing this for 20 years so yes, I like it!:D

Thanks for the great posts!
Kitty 34- I remember how horrible the kids in my classes in school were to their subs- if you have been doing it happily for 20 years you must be great at it!
