i have a friend who's FIL was killed in a disgruntled employee workplace shooting and I know that damage it can do to the victims families.

That is horrible. I can't imagine a judge being allowed to get away with this type of ultimatum. I served as a juror on a murder trial a few years ago. The brother of the victim found her. His emotions had no bearing on our decision to convict the defendant.

It's sad, but emotional outbursts of any kind are not permitted in court. The attorneys and judge obviously felt her emotions may become an issue. Crying is pretty normal on the stand. Testifying is pretty stressful, but there is a difference between crying and a breakdown.
