Not the cakes they serve on-board, but rather cakes made at home.

Part of Christmas this year will be the "big reveal" to the kids about our cruise in May. In addition to some books, we would like to present a cruise-ship cake.

I found this on Amazon:

which would certainly fit the bill, but before I pull the trigger, I was wondering if anyone here had suggestions for other molds/templates, etc.?

Many thanks!

I found a generic cruise ship cookie cutter (can't remember where) and made these for one of our pre-cruise parties....I am not a big cookie decorator so I am sure others can do a much better job decorating but it was a fun project. I used Nigella Lawson's sugar cooking recipe and just winged the icing.

and I bought this for the party from the Great American Cookie Company

Love the mold you posted!!! May have to get that!

I would do something similar to this: http://www.ehow.com/how_8118586_make-cruise-shipshaped-cake.html
tip about sculpting the cakes, freeze them after they cool to room temperature. This makes it much easier to shape without the cakes falling apart. I wouldn't waste my time with the black fondant windows, I would draw everything out on the frosted cake with a toothpick, and follow with tinted buttercream.

I would do the eHow cake. It doesn't seem that hard and I bet you could make it look more cute than the mold. I think I just might make one myself!

Are there pics on that eHow site? I'm not seeing any on my iPhone.

No pictures, but you really don't need them. I think I'm going to make it different. I'll forgo the "ocean" sheet cake base and cut a couple of sheets to make the ship.Use a ship shaped template in three sizes if you don't think you can free hand it and stack them large to small, then maybe a couple of small loafs or some cupcakes for the smokestacks.
I'm sure you can do this. I am in no way a pastry chef, but have found that my kids are impressed with any baked good that is fun. I think your kids will be so happy that the cake will look like museum art to them! And, hey, what really matters is it's cake!!

There is a video (I think) that I didn't watch because I have sculpted cake before. Best advice is keep it frozen, swap out 1/2 cup of the liquid in the cake with a hunts sank-pak pudding. Use a long serrated knife to keep the cake from tearing. Try a mini with two small cake rounds to get the hang of it.

MJ, your cookies turned out so cute! Did you use colorflow icing?

Here is the cake our local bakery made for my son's birthday. It was a huge hit with him. He loves the Disney Cruise and we were sailing on the Dream the week after his birthday.

Though I've never looked for boat specifically, I've always had luck with Wilton products.

I am a Wilton cake decorating instructor, Colorflow is basically dried egg whites, confectioners sugar and water (or you can buy the special color flow mix). The egg whites allow it to dry quickly and shiny. But powdered sugar and water work fine. The cookies shown looked very nice. Good job!

Can't believe DCL and Disney online are missing out on another trick here!

Magic class and Dream class cake molds, and cookie cutters!

Really cheap to produce and I bet they would sell really well online if not onboard!
