My son is REALLY into model trains. We've finally decided to get him one for his birthday. Upon doing some research, I now realize there is a large number of different model train companies (and presumably varying quality) and styles of track. Do any of my fellow DISers have some experience with model trains?

As far as background, I'm thinking HO gauge is a good size. He switches back and forth between wanting the Santa Fe engine and a steam engine, so I haven't decided which route to go in that regard yet. I want to get him a simple figure 8 track to start, too.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd suggest you find a local hobby shop with a knowledgeable model railroad dept and get their input on what you need....or even a model railroad message board online.

You might also try to locate a model railroad club in the area...they would be a great source of practical info.

Go with steam engine...much more fun to watch run.

I don't know much about them but all the guys in our family are into LGB. They're nice airloom quality, larger in size and pretty much indestructible...ds got a set when he was 3 and he's rough on toys.

Have you checked for a railroad museum in your area? They're a lot of fun, usually run by volunteers and inexpensive. Just thought I'd mention it.

oh, and did you know Disney has a train tour...

haven't been, but I heard it's worth it!
